" FRIEDRlCH JOHANN DITRICH HLLINGHORST, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
I RADIATOR OR COOLER FOR MOTOR ROAD-VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908.
` Apsiication mea June 2 4, 1967. serial No. 380,579.
'To all lwhom it may concern:
11 Be it known that l, FRIEDRTCH JOHANN DITRICH HLLINGHoRsT, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, of 190B1ythe road, West Kensington Park, London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented anew anduseful Improvement in Radiators or Coolers yfor Motor Road-Vehicles, of' whichfthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to radiators or coolers for motor road vehicles whereby the temperature of the Water which is circulated about the engine cylinders and other parts of such vehicles to be cooled is considerably reduced and overheating prevented,
The resent mvention has reference more especia l-y toradiators or coolersof this class such as are described in the specificationaccompanyinginy application for LettersrPatent dated March 13th, 1907, Serial Number Radiators or coolers of the kindabove re- `ferred'to have-comprised an air-.propelling fanin combination with an annular chamber or chambers and supplemental cooling-.spaces arranged at the front and `back of the ,radiator; said chambers and sup spaceslbeing furnished wit i inter-communic'atingrpipes or;connections,.and .the space; at the back: of `the .radiator being perforated, somewhatvhoney-comblike, by means of a series ofshort horizontal' pipes or ducts by which-thefair was directed onl tothe parts to l be cooled.
"provide aradiator or cooler inwhi l the rectly about thecourse taken by lthe current- `pipes chamber, so that l the water The object 'of my present inventio A is to maximum, coolingsurface isfdispojsed di-` of air drawn into,` circulatedround, and driven out of, the coolingY chamber.
The invention consists essentially. in` pro viding at the `front and back of; the radiator annular chamber;v concentric ends with a larger.4 concentric chamber di-` vided Y diametricallyby` partitions into two f compartments, andv 0r passages. from the main. annular to be cooled-'is .caused to liiow from-the `upper com fartment of saidconcentric chambers throng the.u'p
per haliof the series of radial tubes tothe `inner` annular.` chamberaand thence through leniental cooling havingv communicatingl d about. the corrugated surface e.
the lower half of the radial tubes into the lower compartment from which it discharges into the body of the radiator and circulates about the main annular chamber.
ln order that my inventionlmay be better understood reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, tion of a radiator or cooler' constructed in accord ance withthe present improvements and suitable `for use upon an ordinary motor car.
Figure 1 is a rontelevation with part of the right hand half .brokenaway or in section for the'sake of clearness. Fig. 2 is a similar view. to Fig. 1, but taken from the back ofthe radiator. Figsl is a transverse vertical section taken `through the i. ain annular chamber ofl the radiator, and Egg, centralsectional yelevation through the entire device but taken at right angles to Fig. 3. Like letters of reference indicate the same partsin the various figures, and it maybe ere noted that the thicknesses of sheet metal from which the radiator is made have' been somewhat exaggerated f'or, purposes of clear illustration.
a is the main annular chamber supported upon .the baseer tank b and into which the water to be cooled from the motoris forced through a pipe c, Figsi?. and 14, b means lof a circulating pump ofy any well nown form and not shown.v in the. drawings.
d (Fig.l 2) is the dischargepipe* from the base or tank band from which the cooled water is returned to the' .engine cylinders or other parts of the motor'for fresh use,a constant ,circul ation being thus V maintained and which are in illustrafrequent changing' -or replenishing of the water obviated.
lnl the form of my invention illustrated I .preferably form the'inne'r'surface e ofthe annular chamber c from corrugated sheet. metal so that an increased cooling surface is insured.
flh'e annular chamber a is open at its lower -part to thebaseor tank b and is stopped-ofi at its upper part by nieansof partitions f, j', Fig; 3, so that the warm water as it rises 1n .said chamber is further. cooled by circulating y Short pipes g, .g, are iitted'to each partition'f,f, to permit of the egress o faircontained in the' tank l) or chamber a to the -space' in the crown a above 4the normal level of the water in the radiator, androm which escapes-through spindle E ot the :an fm.
