Description

Sad Iron.
Fammi March so, 1852.
N. TALIAFERRO, OF AUGUSTA, AND WM.
D. GUMMINGS, OF MURPHYSVILLE, KENTUCKY.
sMooTHING-IEON.
`Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,848, dated March 30, 1852.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, NICHOLAS TALIA- rERRo, of Augusta, Bracken county, Kentucky, andWILLiAM I). CUMMINGS, of Murphysville, Mason county, Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements `in Smoothing-Irons; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, which is made part of this specification and in which the iron is shown in a perspective longitudinal section.
The object of our invention is to render practicable the permanent heating of smoothing' irons chiefiy by the proper regulation and distribution of the draft to a charcoal or other fire within the iron, by an arrangement which prevents also the spilling of the ashes and refuse of combustion. f
(a) is the box of a hollow smoothing iron of the usual configuration. The opening at top is closed by a lid (o) which catching withiny a notch (c) in the box is thereby held fast at the front and at back is secured to the box by a pin (d) which is passed through the lugs (e, 7) on the lid and the lug (g) on the box. From the front end of the lid arises a tube (h) curved for ward at its upper end and filling the oflice of a chimney to the combustible matter within the box. To this chimney and the lug (e) is fixed the handle by which\the iron is manipulated.
The aperture (i) in the back of the box sufliciently above the bottom to prevent the escape of ashes, &c., admits the draft within a tube (j) which occupies the central portion of the bottom; from this tube, apertures (la), suliciently small to exclude the fuel from the tube, properly distribute the draft to the fire of charcoal or other suitable fuel within the box.
The mouth of thev aperture is furnished with a damper (Z) vibrating on a pivot by which the ingress of draft may be exactly regulated and the heat of the iron thereby tempered at will; (a) is a spring for the pur ose of making permanent the pressure of the damper against the back of the iron. Y
Having thus fully, clearly and exactly described the nature, construction :and operation of our improved smoothing iron, what we claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The application (substantially as described) to a self-heating smoothing iron of a tube or chamber (j) at the bottom of the fire box provided with a registered mouth or inlet some distance above the bottom and at its lower portion with distributing apertures (k) communicating with the fire, whereby the draft is applied from beneath and equally at every part and placed under control of the operator without permitting the escape of ashes, or other refuse of combustion.
Intestimony whereof, We have hereunto set our hands before two subscribing witnesses.
NICHOLAS V'IALIAFERRO. WILLIAM D. CUMMINGS.
