INVENTOH J [11 1 (El-1. 31152 WIT/41588585 ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BRAUER, OF MENASHA, WISCONSIN.
SHIPPING-CASE-COVER FASTENER.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Application filed November 25, 1907. .Serial No. 403,614.
nasha, in the county of Winnebago and.
State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement 1n Shipping-Case Cover Fasteners, of which the following is a spec1 fication.
My invention relatesto awire shipping case cover fastener for use principally upon pails formed ofstaves and turned into a round form for packing cases, such as pails in which tobacco, candy, &c. are shipped from the wholesaler 'to the retailer, but is applicable also to pails formedof fiber, veneer, metal,
620. or boxes made of various kinds of material and form, which may be used for similar shipping purposes, and the object of my invention is to provide a fastening device that is easy to make is of low cost and can be easily applied and one thatcan be applied in such a manner that it cannot be removed, the cover of the package removed and also some 'of the contents of the ackage and the cover re-placed and also its astening device, without said fastening device indicating by its mutilation, the probability of the contents of said packa e having been tampered with while in transit between the packer and ship er and the consignee, so that if any loss ta es place in transit, it will be apparent to the receiver and can be at once, and correctly located.
My invention is shown in the accompanyin%drawing, in which,
i ure 1 is an elevation in perspective of a pail aving a cover, and afastening device applied thereto. Fi 2 is an elevation in perspective of a pail having a cover thereon, and a fastening device of a modified construction applied thereto.
Similar numerals and letters indicate like parts in the several views.
hoops thereon, and 4, its bail secured with the usual staples 5.
7 6 and 6, indicate the wire'fastening devices.
lwill first describe the construction of the device shown in Fig. 1.. It consists of two pieces of wire, 7 and 8, of similar len th, each om the ore 9, near the top of the pail, and a twist made in the wire or,a head and washerv 10, provided upon the inside end of the .wire sothat it cannot be pulled through said bore. The cover is broken through in the figures so as to show Sflltl' washer upon the end of the wire. Each wire is then to be pulled 'up tightly against said washer, twists or bends, and bent upward over the edge'of the cover, the slack of the wires being thei bent toward the center of thejpail cover and the outer loops formed of the two wires 7 and 8 twisted around each other, as shown at 1.1, until the several wires are drawn tightly over the cover for holding it in position. As the twisting of the wires requires a special tool for-doing it, thewire cannot be untwisted, the cover removed and the contents of the package abstracted and the cover replaced and the wire again twisted tcgether, without the effects of such action being plainly shown by the kinks and muti-' l'ation of the wire. In order to make interference with the fastener more surely visible, melted solder, 12, can be dropped upon the central eye of the twist, and a letter, or charactor, as -X, impressed upon it and thereby providing a seal upon the fastener.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2, three separate wires, 13, 14 and 15, are shown, but more can be used if desired. The inner end of each piece' is provided'with a washer 1.0,
- sufiiciently tightenedover the cover for hold ing it in position; Solder, 12, can be applied over the twist and a seal impressedupon it as in'Fig. 1. The fasteners loan be removed when reqnired,,b r the use of the usual tinners snips, or wit a hammer and cold chisel.-
Havin described my invention, what I claim an desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A fastenerforfa pail or other shipping case cover, comprising a shippin case provided with a plurality of bores trough the same near its upper end, a plurality of wires assing outward from the inner side of said ores, means for preventing the pullin through said bores of the inner ends of sai wires, said wires extending upward outside of theshipping case and over its cover to near its center, where all of the wires are twisted together until tightened sufficiently for holding the cover in position thereon.
2. A fastener for a pailor other shipping ores, means for preventing the pulling through said bores of the'inner ends of said wires, said wires extending upward outside of the shipping case and over its coverto near its center, where all of the wires are twisted together until tightened sufiiciently for holdin the cover in position thereon and solder app ied over the central portion of said twist.
' 3. A fastener fora pail or other shipping ease cover, comprising a shippin case provided with'a plurality of bores't ough the samenear its upper end, a plurality of wires assing outwar from the inner side of'said ores, means for preventing the pullin through said bores of the inner ends of'sai' wires, said wires extending upward outside of the, shipping case and over its cover to near its center, where all of the wires are twisted together until tightened sufficiently for holding the cover in position thereon,
solder applied over the central portion of said twist, and a seal impressed upon said solder consisting of a letter or a suitable character.
4. A fastener for a pail or other shipping case cover, comprising a shippin case pro- Vided with a plurality of'bores through the same near its upper erid, two wires each.
formed into a loop and each endof the wire of the loop passed through one of said bores,
a suitable head formed on the end'of each wire inside of its bore for preventin said end ere, the outer loop its central portion and' twisted together until sufficiently tightened 'for holding the cover in position upon the case. i I JOHN BEAU-ER.
