To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD W. HAMAXX. a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Flue Cleaners,of which the following is a specification, containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin a part hereof.
Myinvention relates to a ioiler flue cleaner, my objectbeing to construct a simple cleaning apparatus, which is located immediately to the rear of boiler, either inside or outside'of the rear wall of the boiler setting, and which apparatus is utilized to direct jets of steam or compressedair into and through the boiler fines to remove all soot and the like from said lines.
To the above pur oses, myinvention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, ointed out in the claims, and illustrated in tile accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the rear portion of a boiler, and showing my improved apparatus arranged 1n the rear wall of the boiler setting; Fig. 2 15 an enlarged horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a housing in which the jet tubes of the cleaner operate; F ig.- -l is a perspective view of the forward end of one of the jet tubes I make use of in carrying out my invention.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings z-1 designates the boiler, 2 the flues therein, and 3 the rear wall of the boiler setting.
i designates a housing, preferably cona wide open mouth, which is arranged immediately to the rear of that portion of the boiler in which 'the boiler .flues are located;
and said housing, in the presentinstance, is shown as being located in the rear wa.ll 3 of the boiler setting, although a portion of said housing may be located inside or outside of said wall.
Formed in the rear 4 are the horizontally which is arranged for seatedtherein, within portion of the housing arra-nged bearings 5, in rotation a tube 6; and the housing 4, is a series of jettubes 7, which extend forward through the housing 4, andhavetheir forof metal, in mating halves, and with ward ends flattened, as designated by S, in order to discharge the air or steam in thin jetsjthrough the forward open end of the housiiig. v
The outer end of the )ipe 6 is arranged for rotation in a housing 9 located on the end of a pipe 10, which'leads from a suit able source of steam or compressed air supply, and fixed on the pipe 6 is an operating handle '11.
When an apparatus of'my improved construction is installed and it is desired to clean the boiler flues, the steam or compressed air is allowed to discharge through the pipe 10, and. from thence said steam or airasses through the pipe 6 into and through t ie jet tube 7, and discharges from the flattened nozzles on the forward ends thereof.
The operator by engaging the handle 11 rocks the shaft 6, and thus the forward ends of the jet tube 7 are alternately raised and lowered, and the jets of steam or air issuing from the forward ends of said tubes are thrown into the rear ends of all of the boiler hues and, as a result, the soot and like foreign matter is forcibly blown through said tubes into the breeching at the forward end of the boiler, from whence it is carried into the stack.
Where a battery of boilers are located side by side, one of the housings 4 may be located to the rear of each boiler, and the pipe 6 may be extended-through the rear ends of all of the housings, and thus the fines in all the boilers may be simultaneously cleaned.
Where the housing of the cleaning apparatus is bricked into the rear wall, as shown in the present instance, the pipe 6 is extended to the side of the boiler setting; and said pipe is, therefore, rocked from the side of the boiler setting; but where the rear portion of the housing projects through the rear wall of the boiler setting, the operating handle will be positioned on the pipe immediately adjacent the projecting portion of said housing, and thus the apparatus will be operated from the rear of the boiler setting.
A flue cleaner of my improved construction is easily installed, is operated with ease, and the steam supply may be taken from the exhaustof an engine, thus utilizing steam which would otherwise go to waste.
