To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN MAGEE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blowers for Boilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had herein t the accompanying drawings.
In water tube boilers of the upright type in which an upper drum is connected to alower drum by upright water tubes, and upright baffles are used to conduct the gases of combustion longitudinally of the tubes up one pass formed by the baille and down the next pass, it is desirable to provide cleaning agents that will prevent the precipitation of soot to any extent against the baffle and will aid in propelling the soot toward the smoke exit. In boilers of this type in which the gases of combustion are introduced near the lower` drum from the combustion chamber, usually from a lateral inlet, it is somewhat difficult to maintain such cleaning members near.the point of entrance of the gases because of the extreme heat of the latter. In certain types of cleaners or blowers this may be accomplished by having the blowers withdrawable fromthe path of the gases. This necessitates a certain amount of space outside of the boiler to permit of the withdrawal of the cleaning members.
This invention relates to soot blowers for boilers of the type above described, in which a series of blower units are mounted on either face of the upright baliie or baffles which form the boiler passes both at points distant from the entrance of the extremely hot gases from the combustion chamber and directly at this point, but in such a way as to be eifective without being in the direct path of the gases. The blower as a whole is so disposed as to be effective in aiding the draft as well as propelling the soot and dislodged matter along the path of the draft and therefore through the outlet.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly j tially in longitudinal upright section and partially in elevation, of a boiler equipped with a blower that embodies features of the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the boiler shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, a boiler which is known commercially as the Wickes type, consists of an upper steam drum 1 and a lower member 2 connected by upright water tubes 3 and mounted in an external setting 4 of suitable design. Gases of combustion from the furnace chamber 5 enter the setting at the opening shown at 6 and are directed upwardly by a central upright baffle 7 that is disposed transversely across the setting and is usually held in position by the adjacent contacting series of water tubes indicated at 9 in Fig. 2. The gases pass over an opening between the top of the baile and the upper drum 1 and down-l wardly and out through a smoke outlet 10 just above the lower drum or shell 2. As a result of this construction the gases from the combustion chamber do not impinge vat exactly right angles against the bailie opposite the throat opening 6 but tend to swing upwardly in substantially the manner indicated by the arrows, thereby leaving what may be called' a dead air lor gas space in the lower angle.V
A series of blower units is arranged along the face of the baffle in the pass and along the corresponding side of the baille in the down pass so as to command the inner surfaces of the passes andV to direct cleaning jets along the baffle faces. A rotatable jet pipe is mounted in the lower dead space formed above the lowerdrum 2 and the baflie and is made up of a horizontal pipe 12 whose outer end is journaled in a suitable bearing head 13 and whose steam intake end portion is rotatable in a suitable housing 14, the members 13 and 14 being properly adjusted in the setting. A suitable steam `connection 15 with a steam line 16 whereby the pipe may be revolved as through the medium of a hand wheel 17 or the like, provides means for introducing steam under pressure either from the `boiler itself or other suitable source of supply, or air under pressure from a suitable supply.
f series of jet nozzles extend laterally from` the pipe 12 and may be turned outwardly or upwardly so as to direct the cleaning jets between the banks of water tubes andv along the latter and upwardly along the baffle in the direction of draft.
An intermediate pipe 18 likewise provided with lateral jets and with suitable steam connections, and rotatably mounted in the setting, is placed adjacent the corresponding face of the baffle above the pipe 12 and a similar pipe 19 with lateral jets is also disposed across the setting adjacent the baffle near the upper end thereof. Since these pipes are rotatable to adjust the jets therefrom to move upwardly in the direction of the draft, they thereby assist the draft to propel soot and other matter that has been previously blown from the water tubes by the jets as the blower units are turned, and so cause the soot to be carried over and enter `the down pass. Blower units 20, 2 and 22 are similarly disposed along the fan of the baflie so as to command the'interior surfaces ofthe down pass, the proximate baffle face and the water tubes and blow the soot not only from the tubes but when dislodged drive it forward along the direction of the draft, the lowest unit being in the angle of the baffle and bottom drum so that the soot may be driven directly through the lateral outlet. l
Preferably the upper pipes maybe manipulated from the floor by means of chains or like means suitably mounted on hand wheels. In operation the pipes may be severally operated to dislodge the soot, preferably starting with the unit which is nearest the gas intake and then in succession up the face of the baffle and then down the face of the baffle in the down pass so that the soot is first stirred up and then projected inthe direction of the draft, thereby being ejected through the smoke outlet. The disposition of the lower members in the angles of the baffle and lower drum prevents the lodginent of soot in the angles while at the Sametime the unit that is on the intake side of the baffle at this point is so disposed as not to be affected by the incoming hot gases which pass above it and d0 not tend to burn it out.
Obviously, changes in the detail of ycon- Y struction may be vmade without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myselfto any particular form or arrangement oflparts.
-What I claim is l. A soot blower for boilers having upper and lower members connectedby upright water tubes and divided'by a baffle into an vup-pass and a down-pass with gas intake near the lower end of one pass andsmoke outlets near the lower end of the other pass, comprising a series of rotatable jet pipes journaled across the pass spaces at points alongthe upface and down-face of the baffle and adapted to direct jets against the interior surfaces of the boiler and along and over the tubes and baffles in the general direction of draft.
2. A soot blower for boilers having upper and lower steam drums connected by upright water tubes and divided by a bafl'le into an up-pass and a down-pass with gas intake near the lower end of the up-pass and a smoke youtlet near the lower end of the other pass, comprising a series of angularly adjustable jet pipes mounted across the passes at points along the up-face and downface of the baffle adapted to be arranged to direct jets simultaneously in the general direction of the draft in both passes.
3. A. soot blower for boilers having upper and Vlower steam drums connected by upright water tubes and divided by a baiiie into an up-pass and a down-pass withV gas intake near the lower end of the up-pass and a smoke outlet near the lower end of the other pass, comprising a series of angularly adjustable jet pipes mounted across the passes at points along the up-face and downface of the baffle adapted to be arranged to direct jets simultaneously in the general direction of the draft in both passes, the jet pipe adjacent the gas .inlet in the up-pass being disposed out of the general path of the products of combustion as they enter the pass from the inlet.
4. A soot blower for boilers having upper and lower steam drums connected by upright water tubes and divided by a baflie into an up-pass and a down-pass with gas intake near the lower end vof the up-pass and a smoke outlet near the lower end of the other pass, comprising a series of angularly .adjustable jet pipes mounted across the `the gas intake.
5. The combination ofa boiler having an upper drum, a lower drum, water tubes connecting lthe drums, a setting inclosing the drums and tube-space with a gas inlet and agas outlet adjacent the upper face of the lower drum, and an upright bafl'le extending across the setting betweenthe inlet and outlet and forming an up-pass from the inlet and a down-pass to the outlet, with a soot blower consisting of a series of .angularly adjustable jet pipes across the passes adjacent the up-face and the down-face of the baffle, provided with lateral jet openings for directing jets over the pass and baflie surdrum in the down-pass for directing jets directly toward the outlet.
