Description

PATENTED APR. 14., 1908.
W. LI CURTIS. ROLLER 0R WHEEL.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 3, 190B.
vWALTER L. CURTIS, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
ROLLER OR WHEEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led'January 3, 1908. Serial No. 409,171.
Patented April 14, 190s.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WALTER L. CURTIS, a citizen ofV the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Roller or Wheel, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a new and improved roller or wheel especially adapted for use in roller skates, casters, and sinn ar locations where a strong, light article is needed, which can be made of sheet metal and so constructed as to be made practicall of balls.
1n one integral piece, whereby the same wi l not come to pieces from wear and jar.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, referring to which Flgure 1 is a Side elevation of the improved construction. Fig. 2 is a central sectional elevation, and Figs. 3. and 4 are views similar to Fig. 2 illustrating modifications.
Referring to the drawings and in detail, the im roved wheel or roller will be Seen to be ma e and constructed as follows: l
1() designates a circular rim or tread made out of sheet metal., The sheet metal is doubled back at each edge or side under the rim as at 11-11, So that the rim or tread in substance will be double. From the in-bent portions 11-11 the sheet metal extends centrally to form flanges 12-12. If desired these flanges may be bored or punched out as atV 120, so that the flanges 1x2-12 will form spokes. From the fianges 12-12 the sheet metal extends outwardlyv as at 13-13 to form a double central hub. A wheel or roller constructed in this way is very vstrong and efficient. It is provided with a long wearing tread, and bemg formed from sheet metal will not j ar loose or come to pieces from wear or blows.
15 designates a double ball-rest which is made out of one piece or cylinder of sheet metal, and which has a central inner bend or depression 16 so that a double ball-way or rest is provided. This ball-way or rest is held in place in the double central hub by turning or bending the ends or edges of the central hub down over the edges or ends. of the double ball-rest, as at ILL-14. In this way the double ball-rest is tightly and securely held in place in the wheel or roller.
In Fig. 3 a similar construction is shown, except that the ball-rest 17 therein employed has a single central groove170 for a single set By reference to Figs. 2 and 3 it will be seen that the outer edges of the hub project over the outer edges of the ball-rest but do not quite cover them so that an annular ledge 19 'is provided for receiving and holding the dust ca (not shown).
n Fig. 4 a modification is shown in which two ball rests 18-18 havingflan'ges 180 are pressed or forced securely into the double central hub 13D-130 of the wheel'or roller.
By the aforesaid construction an admirable wheel or roller is provided which is espe- JIciaclily adapted for use in the locations speci- The details herein shown and described Inay be greatly varied by a skilled mechanic without departing from the scope of my invention as expressed in the claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is 1. A wheel having a two-part central hub, double flanges or spokes, and a double rim or tread all formed from one piece of metal,
each edge of the tread being lntegrally connected with one of the flanges whereby res- Sure im arted to either outer ed e o l the tread will be transmitted to both anges.
2. A wheel having an annular one-piece double ball rest having an annular central depression. j
3. A wheel having a two-part central hub, flanges or spokes, and a rim or tread, all formed of one piece of metal, and a ball-rest held in place in saidtwo-part central hub by inwardly turned flanges on the edges of said hub.
' 4. A wheel having a twoart central hub, flanges or spokes, and a dou le rim or tread, all formed from one iece of metal, and a double ball-rest forme of one piece and having a center inwardly projecting, said ballrest being held in place in said two-part central hub by flanges inwardly turned on the edges of said hub.
A wheel having atwo-part central hub, flanges or spokes, and arim or tread formed of sheet metal, and a ball-rest, the outer annular edges of the hub projecting over u on .the outer faces of the ball-.rest all aroun to form therewith an annular ledge outside of the ball-rest for receiving a dust cap.
6. A wheel having a two-part central hub, flanges or spokes, and a rim or tread all formed from one piece of metal, `the outer j annular edges of the hub projecting inwardly all around, and a ball-rest held between said my hand, in the presence of two subscribing inwarlly Ilyroljloting edges. 1 d b1 b u Witnesses 7.
