ANDREW HESSEL, OF GOLDEN, COLORADO.
GATE
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1903.
Application led January 24, 1908. SeraIlNo. 412,468.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW l-IEssEL, residing at Golden., in the county of Jefferson and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Gate, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention is in the nature of an improved construction of gate for division fences that separate pastures, and it is particularly designed for providing a simple, inexpensive and easily put up means for being vused over irrigating ditches, small creeks and other waterways, not deep enough to cause stock to swim.
My invention comprehends the peculiar arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter explained, specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view that illustrates the preferred form of my invention. Fi 2, is a transverse section thereof, taken su stantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a detail view of one set of castings to which the longitudinal gate timbers or panels are secured. Fig. 4, is a similar view of one of the shaft journal bearings hereinafter referred to.
In carrying out my invention, I provide two high gate posts 1 1, one at each side of the creek or waterway in line with the division fence that separates one pasture from another. y
Suitably positioned' near the base of the posts 1 1 and secured to the said posts are brackets 2 2, each of which has a vertical diagonally extending slot 20 to receive the journals of a cross rod or shaft 3, which, on score of economy, may be a piece of gas pipe.
Lolosely mounted upon the cross rod 3 are a series of spider frames, 4, `three being shown, each of which comprises two castings of like shape, reversibly fitted upon each other, and consisting of the half hub sections l40, having a series of radial bearing arms 41,
and a lug 42, the several arms having apertures 43 whereby the gate panels 5 may be conveniently bolted thereon, the lugs 42 being also apertured for bolting the two half sections together, as shown.
By reason of the construction and arrangement of the parts as described, I have rovided a simple and effective means forta 'ng care of the ditches or waterways on farms,
since by dropping the revoluble gate practically within the ditch or Waterway as shown in Fig. 1, ample means is provided for keeping the stock from going under the gate when the water in the way X is low or high, and furthermore, since the cross rod 3 is vertically movable in the slots 20 of the brackets 2 it follows that the gate automatically rises or falls to follow the height of the water in the way X.
As the gate is loosely mounted to revolve on the rod, it follows the ditch or way at the gate point will not fill with brush or other rubbish, nor will the gate be torn out by the current, as it is freely revoluble on the rod 3 and is mounted to rise high enough to allow the rubbish to pass.
i By arranging the slots for the journals diagonally as shown and described, binding ofthe journals therein is avoided as they are caused to moveup by the rise of the water, a uniform drop of the gate being also provided for sincethe journals must ride down an inclined surface.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s In combination with the o positely disposed end posts, and the brac ets rojected at right angles therefrom, said brac etshaving diagonally inclined slots; of the cross rod having journals for extending into the said slots, and a gate revolubly mounted on the said rod, said gate consisting of a plurality of half hub section castings, each having radial arms and clamping lugs whereby to be loosely fitted u on the rod and panels secured to the coincident arms of the several castings, all being\- arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
ANDREW HEssEL.
