By feeding in fresh material either continuously or intermittently as described, a mass 1T of material is gradually formed in the bath which has the effect of displacing an equivalent amount of fused material which may be removed through spoilt and collected in any suitable receptacle. The formation of the mass 17 also has the effect of increasing the resistance in that. portion of the bath in which it is formed, consequently if the voltage between the electrodes be raised andthe current density kept as before, a. local heating takes place in that portion of the bath immediately surrounding mass 17 which is thus gradually melted, being replenished as described.'
By practicing the process in connection with the apparatus disclosed, regulating the current density and the rate and method of feeding as described, the material may be fused without its attacking the walls 0f the containing vessel, decomposing the material, appieciably affecting the electrodes or contaminating the material to be fused by the material of the electrodes or the containing vessel. Any contaminated fused material caused by the'inelting of the resister may he dra-wn olf in the lii'stdiscliarge of fused material.
lt is obvious that other apparatus may be utiliz-3d in practicing the process and that the apparatus described may be Widely varied without departing from the spirit of my invention, said apparatus disclosed being illustrative only. l do not restrict myself to any articular apparatus or means, but

In a process of fusing alkali peroxids without decomposing the same the formation and maintaining of an insulatingr layer ofui'ifused alkali peroxid between the electrodes and the containing vessel` and the passimir of an electric current through the fused alkali peroxid from one electrode. to the other in such a manner that said current is of Low density in the fused alkali peroxid adjacent to the electrodesand of high density adjacent to the alkali peroxid to be fused.

In a process offusiiig sodium peroxid without decomposing the same the formation and maintaining of an insulating layer of unfused sodium peroxid between the electrodes and the containing vessel and the passing 'of an alternating current through the fused sodium peroxid from one electrode to the other in such a manner that said current is of low density iii the fused sodium peroxid ad jacent to the electrodes and of high densit f :.djacent to the sodium peroxid to be fusetf. ln witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name iii the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
