To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I HIRAM W. BLAISDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ex- I cavators, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others therein and having formed integral therej with a collar 1 which is supported in a yoke l 12, u on washers 13, 14, 15, and 16, formed of di erent materials in order to diminish 'wear and friction.

Experiments have proved that the best results are attained by having the disks 3O nearest the center, formed flat with their surfaces vertical. The next in sequence, 31, are also preferably vertical but concavo-convex in form, the concave sides being nearest the shaft 9. As the distance of the disks from the center increases, it is of great advantage to incline them from the vertical, the to s of the disks being farthest from the shaft 9, as in 32.
-A scraping disk 33 supported adjustably by a standard 34, is incl'ned to the vertical in an opposite direction to the disks 32 so as to enable it to work close to the wall of the vat. This disk is preferably flat and may or may not have its horizontal diameter inclined to the direction of travel.
Disk 35 is placed near the end of one of the arms other than that which carries disk 33, and is preferably vertical, so that it will not interfere with the sloping disk adjacent to it.
The inner end of shaft 25 carries an adjustable throw crank 36, which is connected by means of a pitman 37 with a reci rocating lever 38, loosely mounted on a sha t 39. In Fig. 4, passes reciprocating lever 38 is mounted a pawl 40, gear 10, being splined Fig. 5, the lower part of which, 41, may be ported and placed in working position in any I irection of their one of a number of vats or receptacles, as may be required.

Reference numeral 1 vat such as is used in a row of which, timbers 2 may be supported I on posts 3. Rails 4 are fastened to timbers 1 of a traveling structure 6 are adapted to travel. The central portion of traveling structure 6 has a bearing 7, while a truss 8 carried by said traveling structure sup orts the upper end of shaft 9. The hub of a bevel gear 10 is adapted to turn in bearing 7. Shaft 9, through the hub of the other end of only a square and the end beveled. A spring 42 is .arranged to press the bevel end of the pawl 40 into the teeth of a ratchet wheel 43. A handle or hand wheel 44 may be provided at the end of pawl 40 by means of which the latter may be drawn out until the square art 41 clears the square hole in lever 38, in which it normally rests, whereupon it may be reversed. It is to be understood that no claim is made on this particular form of ratchet and any other suitable form may be adopted.
One member of a clutch 45 may be attached to ratchet wheel 43 the other member being splined to shaft 39. Actuating fork 46 of said clutch chain or other connection 47 to a lever 48, the end of which is connected by means of a link 49 with a lever 50 on ashort shaft 51, the inner end of which has a trip lever 52, which is engaged by the cross head on its downward movement. A sprocket 53 is mounted on shaft 39 and by means of a sprocket chain 54 communicates motion to a Worm lifting gear 55, cables from which are attached to rings 56 fixed to cross head 19. Shaft 39 has also tight pulleys 57 and loose pulleys 58 and 59 over viich run straight belt 60 and cross belt 61.
The bottom of vat 1 may be provided with a filter and may have a central opening 62 below which a conveyer 63 may be supported upon idlers 64.
To frame 28, by means of bracket 66 may be attached one or more vertical scrapers 67, it being understood that these scrapers may be attached at pleasure throughout the length of frame 28 and that the scrapers, if desired,
weighted may be set an angle to their direction of travel.
The mode of operation is as follows: The vat 1 being full of any material which it is desired to discharge therefrom, the traveling structure is run along the rails 4 until the central shaft 9 is over the opening 62 of the vat. The belt 60 is then run on to the tight pulley 57 by means of which the hoisting gear 55 will be operated to lower the cross head 19,. shaft 9 and frame 28, carrying the disks 30, 31, 32 33 and 35, until the disks contact with the surface of the material in the vat. The belt 60 is thereupon returned to its loose pulley. Clutch 26 now being thrown in, motion is communicated to shaft 9 carrying the disks around over the surface of the material. Owing to the angle at which the disks are set, they excavate the material and move it toward the center of the vat anc discharge it through the central opening 62 on to the conveyer 63 which may carry it to any desired place. The crank 36 operates lever 38, which, by means of pawl 40 imparts motion to ratchet 43, thereby through the mechanism reviously described, allowing the disks to ollow the material as its level is may be attached by means of a l material is lacking.
