To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ENos A. KnAsEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ligonier, inthe county of Noble and State of lndiana, have invented a new and useful Ins valid-Bed, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to beds for invalids and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as herein* after shown and described.

The object of the invention is to provide a bed especially adapted for the use of invalids and which is provided with appliances and attachments whereby the invalid may be readily moved with comfort and ease to assume different postures. The bed is also provided with hangers which may b'e grasped by the patient to assist or to accomplish such movement.

The bed consists of a frame upon which is located a sectional mattress frame, a mattress being retained by the last said frame, the said mattress also being composed of connected sections. Means is provided upon the frame of the bed whereby the section of the mattress frame may be brought into alinement with each other horizontally when it is desired that the patient should bein lying posture. By the same means the head and foot sections of the mattress frame may be simultaneously moved so that the patient can be brought to sitting posture with the intermediate section of the mattress serving as a seat. An attachment is provided for the bed frame whereby the' patient may be easily and gently lifted from off the mattress in order that the bed clothing may be changed and the said lifting means may be so operated as to carry the patient to one side or the other of the bed as desired. A table attachment is provided for the bed which may be readily converted into a book rest an which is provided with means for adjusting the angle of inclination thereof. The foot section of the mattress frame is provided with a foot board which may be adjusted longitudinally with relation to the mattress frame in order that the feet of the patient may comfortably rest upon the same.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bed, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same.

The bed consists of the head posts 1 and the foot posts 2 which are joined together by -the siderails 3. The foot posts 2 are not connected together at their lower portions but the head rail 4 connects the lower portion of the head posts 1, 1 together. The upper portions or ends of the posts 1 and 2 are connected together by the bars 5 from each of which depends a hanger 6. The slat 7 eX- tends transversely of the bed frame and connects the intermediate portions of the side rails 3, 3 together. The mattress frame is madeup of a head and foot section with an intermediate section. The said head and foot sections are designated at 8 and 9 respectively and are hinged to the intermediate section 10. The mattress 11 rests in the said sections 8, 9, and 10 which consti tutes the mattress frame. The said mattress is composed of the head section 12, foot section 13 and intermediate section 14. The foot board 15 is mounted upon the foot section 13 and may be adjusted longitudinally of the mattress frame. The intermediate section 1() of the mattress frame is fixed to the slat 7 While the head section 8 may swing from a horizontal position with relation to the section 10 in an upward direction while the section 9 may swing from a horizontal position with relation to the section 10.

in a downward direction. The section 8 and 1() swing simultaneously by means of connections located under the slat 7. The section 8 is provided at its side with the depending arms 16 and the rods 17 are pivoted at theirends to the section '9 and at theiro posite end to the said arms 16. Thus, as t e section 8 is swung up 'the section 9 is simultaneously swung down. The shaft 18 is journaled at the head end of the bed frame and is provided with the winding drums 19. The pulleys 2O are journaled at, or near, the upper ends of the head posts 1 and the tackle 21 are secured to the section 8 and pass over the pulleys 20 and descend and wind about the drums 19. The ratchet wheel 22 is iixed to the shaft 18 and the pawl 23 is pivoted to the frame of the bed and is adapted to engage the ratchet wheel 22. The mattress section 14 is provided at its middle with a vertically disposed opening 24: which is normally closed by a plug 25 preferably made of the same material as the mattress. By removing the plugl 25 a vessel may be inserted in the opening 24 and which will rest at its bottom upon the slat 7. The belt 26 passes through o enings in the mattress section 12 and the ottom of the section 18 and the intermediate portion of the said belt lies under the bottom of the said section 8 while the ends of the said belt are located above the upper surface of the mattress section 12. The said belt may be strapped about the body of a patient in order to support the patient when being moved from an inclined to a sitting posture. The sides of the sections 8, 9, and l() are provided with knobs 27 to which the sheets and pillows or bolster of the bed may be fastened by means of eyelets in order to prevent disarrangement of the bed clothing.

An attachment for raising a patient bodily and for moving him to one side or the other of the bed frame is also provided. Said attachment consists of a bar 28 which is provided with the upwardly disposed hooks 29. The said hooks 29 are adapted to pass over and engage the side bars 5 of the bed frame. A carriage 30 is mounted upon the bar 28 and is provided with rollers 3l which travel along the upper surface of the said bar 28. The standard 32 depends from the carriage 30 and is provided at its lower portion with a screw thread. The crank 33 is provided with a screw threaded perforation which receives the threaded end of the said standard. The late 34 is provided with a perforation whicii also receives the standard 32 and which is supported upon the crank 33. Said plate 34 is provided at its corners with eyes 35 which are adapted to receive the corners of a sling when the patient is being elevated bodily or shifted to one side of the bed. rlhe crank shafts 36 are journaled upon the bar 28 at opposite sides of the carriage 30 and a belt 37 is attached to each of the said shafts 36 with the sprockets 38. The table or book rest attachment comprises a standard 39 which is adapted to t at its lower end in any one of the sockets 38. The upper portion of the standards 39 extends at an angle to the lower portion thereof and is provided with a sleeve 40 which in turn is provided with a set screw 4.1. The table top 42 is provided with the horizontally disposed rod 43 which is adapted to enter the sleeve 40 and which is xedtherein by means of the set screw 4l. Thus it is obvious that the table top may be supported in horizontal position when the patient is taking nourishment or that it may be supported in an inclined position and used as a book rest.

From the foregoing description it is obvious that by winding the tackle 21 upon the drums 19 of the shaft 18 that the head section 8 of the mattress frame will be swung into an elevated position and that the foot section 9 will simultaneously swing down so that the patient may be gently moved from a lying to a sitting posture, and the converse is true when the operation above described is reversed.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Y Patent is A bed comprising head and foot corner posts, overhead bars connecting all of the posts together, side rails connecting the head and foot posts together, hinged sections mounted upon the side rails, the lower portions of the foot posts being disconnected from each other whereby an unobstructed passage is provided between the foot posts to the area between the side rails.
