HANNAH N. L. SHERMAN, OF LAWRENCE, AND FRANK M. LAWRENCE, OF MASTIC, NEW YORK.l
SCREEN FOR OPEN FIREPLACES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 7, 1908.
Application led December 9, 1905. Serial No. 291,092.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, HANNAH N. L. SHER- MAN, a resident of Lawrence, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, and FRANK M. LAWRENCE, a resident of Mastic, in the town of Brookhaven, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, and both citizens of the United States, have invented a new and Improved Screen for Open Fireplaces, of whlch the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved screen for o en fireplaces or grates, arranged to shiel the erson or ersons in front of the fire ace against intense heat radiating from the urning fuel, to prevent sparks passing from the burning fuel into the room, and to allow convenient removal, folding and storing of the lscreen in comparatively little space.
The invention consists -of novel features and parts land combinations of the same which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specliication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corres onding parts in all the views.
igurevl is a front elevation of the-improvement as applied; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the improvement; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged face view of a portion of the screen above the opening thereof. Each hook E2 is also provided with a second bearing E? in front of the bearing E', to receive and su port the lower rod C3, to allow of holding t e screen body A in 'a doubled-up position, to gain access to the fireplace opening whenever it is desired to place fresh fuel in position therein.
The device is very simple and durable in construction, can be cheaply manufactured and readily applied to a fireplace or removed therefrom when not in use, for conveniently storing in comparatively little s ace. We do not limit ourselves to tiie particular suspending means of the screen described, as the same may be varied without deviating from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus describedour invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A screen for open fire laces or grates co'mprising a flexible screen ody, rods secured to the up er and lower ends of said screen bodly, hooks ibr sus ending said screen, said hoo s having alined) recesses for receiving the upper rod', and also having alined recesses for` receiving the lower rod, whereby to hold the screen in a doubled-up osition.
In testimony whereo we names to this specification in the presence ofl two subscribin witnesses.
