FAN ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING CHAIRS.

I .lA/VENTOR 8) w WITNESSES I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM SOHEURER, OF WEST NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY.
FAN ATTAGIQEENT FOR ROGKING-CHAIB IB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented span, 1908.
Application filed November 20, 1967. Serial No. 402,993.'
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SCHEURER, a
- citizen of the United States, and a-resident of West- New York, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented' a new and Improved Fan Attachment for Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is e full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a fan attachment for rocking chairs, and the object of the invention is to provide an arrangement whereby a person s tting in a rocking chair will be automatically fanned as the chair rocks.
' 1 More specifically, the object'of the invention is'to provide improved means for drivthe fan. he invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, to be more fullytion of a rack and means for guiding the .same, which constitutes a feature of the invention; Fig. 4 is a cross section through the driving'shaft and illustrating a part of the driving mechanism for the fan and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, further illustrating the driving mechanism.
Referring more particularly to the parts,
and especially to Fig. 1, 1 represents a'rocking chair of any suitable construction, having rockers or runners 2. To one of the runners near the rear extremity thereof, I attach g ijdly an upwardly extending frame bar 3,
ii w ch bar is formed near its u 'er'end with an arm 4, which is attached to t e side of thechair, as indicated, and above this point the bar 3 is offset outwardly so as to form a head 5. This head 5 is provided on each side with bearing mounting of a fan shaft 7, the same being disposed in a horizontal position and'carrying a fan 8 of the ordinary propeller type. The fan shaft projects, as indicated, at the extremity opposite to the fan, and is proevice is attached is shown in crossbrackets 6, which facilitate thevided with belt ulleys 9 and 10 res ectively, which are rigidl p y attached thereto. iAt .m
intermediate 1point on the height of'the'framo. bar 3- a brac e t-1-1- is rigid]; attached, and this bracket affords means or en a driving shaft 12, which is also in ali-olizontal position. This driving shaft is. provided with two driving pulleys 13 and 14', the censizw tion of which is shown very clearly in Fi s. .4. and 5'; Each driving pulley comprises a: lab. 15, which is rigidly attached to the shaft, and
on this hubthere is loosely mounted andguided a rim 16. The rim. 16 informed at its inner portioninto a ring 17, which constitutes The hub 15 is provided a clutch member. with a clutch pawl 18-, whichis in an inclined position asshown, and the end Qfi' this pawl isheld against the innerfaqfl. 0f clutch ring 17' by a s ring'lQ, asindieated. The construction of t e two pulleys is identical except that the position of the pawl is reversed '111 one case, as will be seen by a comparison of Fi s. 4 and 5. From this atrangement, it wil be understood that when the shaft is rotated toward the left as indicated by the arrow injFig. 4, the pawl 18 will jam on the clutch ring 17 and rotate the rim of the pulley. VVhen the shaft is rotating in the opposite direction, this pawl 18 slips idly on the clutch ring, and does not produce any rotative effect. The frictional contact between the pawl'and the ring is suflicient to produce the rotation'deseribed,
' [In Fig. 5 a reverse arrangement is found,
the shaft operating to drive the pulle by a right-hand rotation, and slippin wit a reversed orleft-hand rotation. Tfie pulley 13 nected therewith by an'open elt or cord 20. The pulley 14 is in alinement with the pulley 10, and is connected therewith by a twisted belt or cord 21. should be understood that when the-mechanism is in operation, both the pulle s 13 and is .in alinement with the pulle 9, and is con- From this arrangement it.
14 will drive their belts in opposite c irections, and the twist in the belt 21. operates in effect to reverse its direction of movement at the fan shaft 7, so that both belts tend to rotate the shaft 7 in the same direction. a
I rovide means for alternately driving the driving shaft 12 in different directions. For this purpose, this shaft is provided with a rigid pinion 22, and with this pinion meshes a rack 23, which rack is rovided on its rear side with a suitable gui e 24 formed on the end of a bracket or arm .25, which is rigidly iii? attached to the frame bar, as will be readily understood. The lower end of this rack" 23 has pivotally attached thereto a link 26, and the lower end of this link is ivotally-attached to a floor lever 27. This oor lever lies in a horizontal position on the floor on the outer side of the ruri'nerto which the frame bar 3 is attached, and its forward end is pivotally attached to the rocker at the point 28, as indicated most clearly inFig. 1. Under its rear end a, roller 29 is provided, an d above this roller a weight 30 operates to hold the lever normally on the fioor.' As the rocking chair rocks back and forth, a reciprocating movement of the rack23is produced by the floor lever27, which remainssubstantially stationary at its rear end, and thus an alternate rotation of the shaft 12 is produced. This alter' hate rotation producesa continuous rotation of the shaft 7 m'the manner described above,
and. hence a high velocity of rotation maybe given to the fan 8. Inthis way an air current directed toward the person. sitting in "thexehair.
the fan attachment does not many way interfere with the freedom of moving the;chair from place to lace about. the floor. The fan; is provided ner such as that shown.
w th a suitable light metal guard which may be attached in any desired manc Having thus described my invention, I
I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 1
' A rockin chairin combination with a weighted floor ever pivotally attached thereto and resting u on the floor, a frame bar attached to the 0 air, a driving shaft, means for rotating said driving shaft in either direct on from said floor lever, one-way clutches on said driving shaft having pulleys driven respectively in apposite directions, a fan shaft, means for r vin said fan shaft from both of said-pulleys, an a fan carried by said fan shaft. s
2. A rocking chair in combination with a weighted member resting upon 'the'floor, a rack attached to said memberand actuated thereby, means for guiding'sai'd rack, a driving shaft, a pinion carried thereby and meshing with said-rack, one-way clutches carried by said drivingshaft, a fan-shaft, means for driving said fan shaft continuously in one direction from said clutches, and a fan on said fan shaft. i Special attention is called to the fact that In testimony whereof I have signed my 'name to this specification'in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
