W. F. PAGETT, OF WHITE POST, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOVEL-PLOWS.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WASHINGTON F. PA- GETT, of White Post, in the county of Clarke, State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement on the Shovel-Plow; and I do declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation'of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specifi' cation, in which- Figure 1 is a top or plan view, and Fig. 2 is an elevation.
A is the beam and sheth. B B are the handles. O is the shovel. D is the brace between the handles.
The beam A is so bent or curved as to form or constitute both beam and sheth. That portion of the sheth to which the shovel attaches is about one foot below and inclines forward, forming an angle of about forty-five degrees with the horizontal range of the beam.
The shovel G is of the usual size and attached by a screw-bolt or rivet. From the top of the shovel are two narrow projections, which embrace the sheth and keep the shovel firm.
The handles 'B B are formed by bending double a bar of iron about six feet long, three inches wide, and threeeighths thick. In thefold,
- about four inches from the center, a block of iron is riveted. Thus a clip or loop is formed, through which the beam passes. The handles gradually open and taper from the block to the ends, pass through the ends of the brace D, (which is about two feet and ten inches long,) and receive hand-pieces of wood. The handles are kept fast bya key, between which key and the beam is a block curved to fit the convex edge of the beam, and may be 'so placed as to make the key tit at any point. By moving the handles up or down on the bend or curve of the beam and sheth their height will be accom modated to the stature of the plowman. On each side of the beam and sheth may be attached a shorter piece corresponding in shape with the first-mentioned beam and sheth, thus making three sheths,which, with the addition of three small shovels, will answer the purpose of a cultivator. To make a double shovel on this plan the main' beam and sheth and the one. applied must diverge equally from line of direction or frontof the beam. Abrace mustpass from one to the other of these sheths about ten inches above the attach ment of the shovels.
What I claim as my invention, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction of the hat] dles and the principle or mode of shifting the same, as the same are herein fully described, with their operation. The invention of the common shovel-plow is of course disclaimed.
