Be it known that l, GIACOMO MIGLI'AvAccA, of the city and'county of Napa, State of California, have invented an Improved Bottle-Oorking Machine; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are suiiicient to enable any person' skilled in the art or science to' which it most nearly appertains, to makeand use my said invention or im.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple machine for col-king bottles, so that bottles of any size 4may be easily and readily titted with a cork, without the necessity of compressing the end which is to be inserted, previous to fitting it; and

1t consists of a base, having an upright standard attached to it, near one end. v

Upon this standard, at a convenient height, is atbloek, having a hole, which ta.- through it, suticiently large to -admit a cork.

-A block of wood or metal is placed under the semicircular block, at the foot of the standard, upon which the bottle 'to be corked is placed, when the block is moved up by a bar, 'which moves back and forth in a slot in the base, and whichhas its upper side an inclined plane.

By moving this sliding bar toward the block, the bottle is raised up until its mouth strikes the semicircular block, directly under the hole, when the cork, 'which has been previously placed in the h ole, is forced down into the neck of the bottle, by a cone-shaped pin, attached to the lower end of a bent arm, which is op- -erated by a lever at the back of the upright standard.

Two arms, c c', are hinged to 'one end of the block O, and have their opposite ends pivoted to two parallel strips, d d, permanently fastened each side ofthe longi- 1 tndiual slot a, which retains the block O always in its relative position to the standard.

The standard B has permanently attached toit, at a convenient height, a semicircular block, D, which has a hole, e, passing entirely through it, the hole at the lower side of the block being conntersunk. to receive the mouth of the bottle.

A vertical slot, j, is cut through the standard, just above4 the block D, through which a bent arm, g, passes,

having'a conical pin, E, attached to the lower side of its outerend.

This bent arm' is operated by the lever F, at the l back of the upright standard B.

The oi'mration of' my machine is as follows:

The bottle-is placed upon the block C, as shown in red, iig. 2, and the sliding barb is moved up, which carries the bottle np, until its mouth presses against the block D, directly under the hole e'. The coi'k having been placed in the hole at its top, the leverF is forced down, which causes the cone-shaped pin E to drive the cork into the mouth of the bottle, when the sliding bar may be drawn back, and the bottle removed.

By this arrangement, bottles may be easily and quickly corked, avoiding the necessity of compressing the end of the cork, or cutting it away, until itis easily fitted, leaving it in a condition liable to leak.

My apparatus is compact and cheap,.easily worked by hand, and very expeditious. Y

1. `The vertically-moving block O, with the inclined operating-gauge l1, and the parallel retaining-bars c'c, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as hereindescribed.

2. The block D, with its tapering passage e,with the plunger E, the bent arm g, and the hand-lever F, substantially as and for the pulpose described.
