Description

No. 883,849. PATENTED APR. 7, 1908.
W. K. ANDREW. OIL PUMP POR BXPLOSIVB ENGINES.

Speoieation of Letters Patent.
Patented April 7, 1.908.
Application iisd November 23, A191W.- Barialllle. fsl.
To all 'whom ttm-cy concern.
Beit known that I, WILLIAM K. ANDREW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of' Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oil-Pumps ior EXplosive-Engmes, of which the following is a complete specication.
This invention relates tooil supply pumps for internal combustion engines, theobject being to provide a simple and effective pump for'electlng the oil sup ly, such pump being adapted to be operate either mechanically from some moving part of the engine or by the-operator when providing ran initial oil su ply in starting. l
n the accompanying drawing forming a part of this appllcatione-Figure 1 represents aside elevatlon of an engine, in connection withV which theimroved pump is shown. F' 2 is an enlarge detail showing a longitulinalsection of the pump, and lig. 3 is a detail plan showing the end of the plunger,
the crowned roller. on the end thereof and the' the pump. To the frame 2 of the engine, ad-
jacent' to the cam 8, is iixed the pump, whichv is designated as a unit by A. 'ihls pump com-rises the cylinder 9, in the bore of Whiclli, at each end, are iitted the ump plungers 10 and 11. The plun er 10 is mechanically operated inv one irection by means of the cam 8, an anti-friction cam-en` gaging roller 12 being suitably journaled on the projecting end of said plunger. The manually operated plun er 11, which is iitted in the o posite c nd o the pump cylinder 9, is proyidbd with a projectin stem 13. To the outer end of this stem is ed a button 14 to be engaged by the hand of the operator for actuating the plunger. The gland 15 iits over the stem 13 of the lunger 11, While the gland 16 the other end of t e pump cylinder. The pump plungers 10 and 11 are provided with the inwardly projecting stems 101 and 111, re-
.end thereof,
provides a tig t joint for spectively, these stems engaging the coil v spring 17, which is inter osed between the said plungers. The wor ing stroke of the plunger 10 is positively effected by means of the cam 8 and lthat of the plunger 11 by means of the operator, vwhile both plungers are returned to their end positions by means of the sin le` spring 17.
n Oil is through the oil conduit 18, which is controlle by the valve 19, while the conduit so controlled by the valve 21 conductsv the oil to the constant level cup 22 of the engine.` To prevent angular or turning movement of the plunger 10 and consequent deiiection of with the groove 25 in the cam 8, constitutemeans for preventing angular movement of the said plunger. Lugs 23, formed integral with the ump cylinder 9, aordv means for securing t e pump A. to the frame 2 of the en me.
at i claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In an oil supply pump for explosive engines, in combination, la pump cylinder, a mechanically operated plunger iitted in one a manualy operated lunger fitted in the other end thereof, andp valvecontrolled oil conduits leading to and from lsaid pump cylinder.
2. In an oil supply pump for explosive engines, in combinatlon, a pump cylinder, a
mechanically operated lunger fitted in one vend thereof, a manually operated plunger fitted in the other end thereof, a single sprlng interposed between the plungers and operating to hold them in thelr'outward position, and valve-controlled-oil conduits leading to and from said pump cylinder.
3. ln` an oi supply pump for eX losive engines, in combination, a pump cy nder, coaxially arranged plungers fitted in the ends thereof, one of said plungers being mechanically operated and one manually operated, inwardly projecting stems formed on the ends of said plungers, a spring intenposed between the plungers and en a in the stemsjthereon, and valve-control eg o1 conduits leading to. and Jrom said pump cylinder.
4. In combination with an explosive enrawn into the pump cylinder 9- vthe roller 12 from its plane of rotation, the
gine provided with e rotating eem, an oil supply pump comprising e'pum cylinder, e. plunger provided 'on its projecting end with an antifrlction rollerland `ednpted to be aetnated ley-said rotating cam of the engine in one direction, means'for preventing angular movement of said plunger, a seeond plunger tted in the op oeite end of said cylinder,
' arranged coaxie 1y with respect to the first mentioned plunger end-adapted to be manuelly operated, a Single spring interposed laeeesee vtween the. two plungers and operating to hold them in their outward position, a Valve-eentrolled oil eonduitentering the pump cylinder between said lungers, and an eljning "valve-controlled oil) conduit leading therefrom.
