State ofOhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is a printing press in which the inking apparatus of each printing roll may be removed readily either for cleansing it or for replacing it with another inking apparatiis.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated a printing press involving my invention, Figure 1 is a view partly in lon itudinal section and partly in side elevation of the impression cylinder, printing rolls, and the removable frames carrying the inking apparatus. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on line yy of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line zz of Fig. 3.

Referring to the parts: Impression cylinder, A, is mounted revolubly in standards (1 of a frame-work, a. Upon frame-work, a, the frame, if, which carries the printing rolls and inking apparatus is mounted to slide on ways in frame, a, so as to allow the printing rollers, B, of which four are illustrated, to be brought in and out of contact with the impression cylinder. Formed upon the inner faces of movable frame 6 are a series of horizontal ways, I), in which are mounted a series of secondary movable frames, C, whlch carry the inking apparatus. These secondary movable frames, C, are of similar construction so that only one of them need be described. They have feet, 0, to fit into the ways, I), so that the frames, C, are readily removable from the ways, b. To adjust ing rolls, B, I have provided adjusting screws, 0, which engage lugs, b upon the frame, b and engage the ends of the movable frames, C, for the purpose of adjusting them toward and away from the printing rolls. In each of the movable frames, C, are mounted ink vat, 0 two sets, a, c", of ink conveying rollers, and two sets of reciprocatingand rotating ink distributing rollers, 0 and '0". Between the sides of the ink vat, 0 an inking roll, 0 is mounted, against which bear a series of arms, 0 the pressure of which against the rolls, 0 may be regulated by adjustin screw, 0*, to regulate the thickness of the ink along the roller, 0 The ink is conveyed from roller, 0 to roller, 0", by a roller, 0 mounted at opposite ends upon reciprocating arms, 0 f
I will now describe the means by which the various motions thus far described of the inking rollers is conveyed to them from the. shaft, b, of the printing rolls.
Adjacent to lnion, 1), upon shaft, b, is a pinion, b, which meshes into a pinion, c, as shown in Fig. 7, which pinion is mounted upon a shaft journaled between the walls of the secondary frame, (.3. This pinion, c, conveys motion to a series of three pinions, a", mounted similarly in the secondary frame, C, which series of pinions, c, convey the rotating motion to the shafts of the reci rocating and rotating rollers, c and c. The pinions, 0 and 0 upon the ends of the shaft, 0 and c", which mesh with the pinions, c", are elongated as shown in Fig. 2, so as to allow of a transverse reciprocation of said shafts. The reciprocation of the shaft, 0 c, as well as the reciprocation of the arm, c and rotation of the inking roller,.c", is ob.- taincd from a pinion, 7), upon the end of the shaft, 6, opposite that u on which the pinion, b, is located. Upon the end of the shaft, D, opposite the end upon which the bevel gear wheel, (Z is mounted, a pinion, (1, is mounted which meshes with a inion, d, which is mounted upon a shaft, journaled in the partition wall, 0, of the frame C. To the pinion, d, a link, (1, is pivoted on a crank pin, which link at the opposite end engages a stud on the arm, 0 which stud rojects through a slot, cl", in the wall of the rame, C, as shown I in Fig. 7.v The shaft,'d of gear, (1, carries moved it is seen that the inkiniap very readily cleaned, or if it e done b thereto.
at its opposite end an eccentric pin, d, to which is pivoted a pawl, d, which en ages a ratchet wheel, 0", upon the shaft of ro l'er, 0 so as to convey an intermittent rotation When it is desired to remove any one of the inking apparatus, or frames, C, of the various printing rolls, B, it is seen that they may be removed bodily. .VVhen thus rearatus is esired to change the color of the ink imparted to any one of the rinting rolls, that this may be simply removing the secondary frame, and inserting a new frame, carryin an ink apparatus with a different color 0 ink, thus avoiding thedel'ays heretofore occasioned by cleaning out an inking apparatus and placing a new color in it whenever it was desired to change the colors being printed.
hat I claim is:
1. In a printing ress the combination of an impression cylin er, a main frame mounted upon ways, means for movin the main frame towards and away from t e im ression cylinder, a series of printing rolls ournaled in the main frame mounted so as to contact the impression cylinder when the main frame is brought adjacent thereto, horizontal ways in the main frame adjacent to each printing roll, a removable secondary frame mounted upon each of the ways in the main frame, and inking rolls journaled in the secondary frames.
2. In a printing ress the combination of an impression cylind er, a main frame mounted adjacent to the impression cylinder, means for moving the main frame .toward and away from the impression cylinder, a series of printing rolls mounted in the main frame, pinions upon the printing rolls, secondary removable frames mounted in the main frame, inking rolls whose shafts are mounted in the secondary frame and gear wheels mounted upon the shafts in the inking rolls and adapte to engage with the pinions upon the printing rolls.
3. In a printing )ress the combination of an impression cylinr er, a main frame mounted reciprocally upon ways to be brought toward and away from the impression cylinder,
printing rolls mounted in the main. frame, secondary frames mounted removably in the main frame and inking apparatus mounted in the secondary frame.
4. In a printing press the combination of a main frame, printing rolls mounted in the frame, pinions upon each end of the printing rolls, secondary frames mounted removably in the main frame, a set of inking rolls mount-ed in the secondary frame consisting o. w. MILES, A. MoConMA'oK.
