CALVERT B. COTTRELL, OF VVESTERLY, RHODE ISLAND.
INKING APPARATUS FOR PRINTING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,666, dated April 12, 1892.
' Application filed November 13, 1891. Serial No. 411,794. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVERT B. COTTRELL, of Westerly, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Inking Apparatus for Rotary Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to in'king apparatus for that class of rotary printing-machines in which the forms or printing-plates are carried by cylinders. It is especially suitable for perfecting printing-machines of that class in which two form or plate cylinders are used, but is in part applicable to machines having only a single form or plate cylinder.
The principal object of the improvement is to provide for the easy removal of the inking apparatusfrom the form or plate cylinder so far as to make roombetween the inking-rollers and the plate-cylinder for a man to step in between them to perform such work as may be desired on either.
The invention will now be described with reference to the drawings, in Which- Figure l represents a vertical section of the lplate-cylinders, impression-cylinders, and inking apparatus of a perfecting machine, illustrating my invention. Fig.l 2 represents a side View of the lower plate-cylinder and its inking apparatus and the driving mechanism for the latter. Fig. 3 is a front View of one side of the inking apparatus, corresponding with Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of some of the details, taken in thc line .fr of Fig. 2. Fig. represents a side view of the upper plate-cylinder, its impression-cylinder,the inking apparatus for the said platecylinder, and the driving-gearing therefor. Fig. 6 represents avertical section of the lower inking apparatus removed from its cylinder, showing, also, a device for the adjustment of the form-rollers. Fig. 7 is perspective View of some of the details of Fig. 6. Figs. 2 to 7 are on a larger scale than Fig. 1.
A is the main or side framing of the machine, erected on the base A and containing the bearings for the first and second form cylinders B B and the first and second impression cylinders C C', all of which cylinders are shown in Fig. l. The cylinder B is also shown in Fig. 2, and the cylinders B and C are also shown in Fig. 5. These cylinders may be geared together in any suitable manner to run in the directions indicated upon themby arrows.
E, Fig. l, is a roller for supplying the web F, which is to be printed on both sides, the said roller being supported in bearings in brackets E* on the main framing, and the said web passing over a guide-roller F and under a guide-roller F2 on its way to the cylind'ers B C. The roller F is mounted in brackets secured to the main framing A, and
' the roller F2 is fitted to bearings in brackets on the upper ink-roller carriage, which will be presently explained.
The several ink-rollers and cylinders and the fountain I for the iirst form cylinder B, which is arranged in the upper part of the machine, are supported in a carriage G, which .is arranged to run on rollers c in two parallel horitheir respective ink-rollers, are shownin full outline with their rollers in operative relation to their respective cylinders B B', and the said carriages and rollers are shown in dotted outline as run back from their respective cylinders.
The running back and forth of the upper roller-carriage G is provided for by means of two toothed racks c, which are secured to opposite sides of the said carriage and are geared with two pinions cl on ashaft e, which extends across the machine and is supported in bearings in the side framing A. The said shaft e is provided at one end with a crank f (see Fig. 5) for the purpose of turning,r it by hand to produce the movement of the carriage. The said shaft e is also furnished with a toothed locking-wheel which is to be engaged by alocking-pawl g, pivoted to the outside of the side framing for the purpose of locking the carriage either in its operative, position or when it is run back from its respective cylinder B.
ICO
The running back and forth of the lower carriage G' is provided for, as illustrated in Figs. l, 2, S, and G, by means of two toothed racks c', two pinions d', and two intermediate gears h between the said pinions d' and racks c'. The racks c' are bolted, as shown in Fig. 3, to flanges fit, which are bolted to the tracks b', the said flanges f* containing bearings for the journals of the frictiou-roll ers a a. The pinions d are on the shaft e', which has its bearings iu the sides of the roller-carriage G', and theintermediate gears h between the said pinions and the racks c' are fitted to turn freely on studs hf, secured in the sides of the carriage. The said shaft c is furnished at one end, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, with a crank j", by which to turn it by hand to produce the movement of the can riage.
To lock the carriage either in its operative position or when run back, there is provided on the shaft e', as shown in Fig. 2, a toe e* to engage with a hooked locking-lever i, fulcrulned at i* to one of the bracket-bearings Ai", (see Figs. 2, Li, and 5,) which are bolted to one side of the framing A for the purpose of receiving the upright shaft Il, through which the necessary movements are given to soule of the rollers in the carriages G G', as will be hereinafter explained. The engatgement of this locking-lever 'i with the toe e* may be understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 4, in the latter of which figures the toe e* is only shown in section. The engagement is maintained by a springj, which connects the said lever with the lnaeket-bearing A* until the disengagement is effected by the pressman applying his hand to the said lever e'.
The ink-rollers and cylinders in the upper carriage G are represented as consisting of a fountain-roller 7i, a carrying-roller Z, a cylinder 7n, two ductors `n, n, a cylinder o, composition distributing-rollers p p, metal distributing or carrying rollers r1 q, vibrating rollers fr r, and form-rollers S s. The in k-rollers and cylinders in the lower carriage G are represented as consisting of a fountain-roller k', a carriage-roller Z', a cylinder on', two ductors n u', a cylinder o', composition distributing rollers p'p, metal distributing or carrying rollers q q', vibrating rollers r' o", and formrollers s' s. The front part of each of the carriages G G', in which part the form-rollers s s or s' s' and vibrating rollers rr or r' fr' are arranged, is of such are shape that the said rollers, when the carriage is run forward to its operative position, may come into proper relation to their respective cylinder. The bearings t t for the said form and vibrating rollers have stems which are fitted into socketsv v, which are bolted to the sides of the carriages G G' and are adjustable in the said sockets by means of set-screws a u to bring the axes of the said rollers exactly in proper arcs concentric to their respective cylinders. As this method of adjusting the form and vibrating rollers is substantially like the adjustment provided for such rollers in other priming-machines, it needs no further description here.
The fountain-rollers i; 7s', the cylinders m m and o o', and the vibrating rollers r r and yr' yr all have positive rotary motion imparted to them by gearing, but the ink-carrying rollers l Z derive rotary motion through contact with their respective fountain-roller 7o or /r' and cylinder m or m', and the form-rollers s s s s' derive motion through contact with their respective vibrating rollers 1'7", and the several distributing-rollers p p p p' and q q q q' derive motion through con tact with their respective cylinder o or o' or other contiguous positively-driven rollers.
The vibrating rollers 7* r and r' fr' and cylinders o o are intended to have their rotary motion given to them by being geared with a spur-gear on their respective form-cylinder B or B; but as such gearing is no part of my invention I have not thought it necessary to represent it.
The fountain-rollers 7c' and ink-cylinders m m are represented as driven from the upright shaft Il, hereinbefore described, through two horizontal shafts, of which one J Ji: is
shown in Fig. o and the other J' is shown in Fig. 2. The upper horizontal shaft J J* is in two parts. its rear part J works in bearings in brackets J2, secured to the exterior of one side of its carriage G, and the forward part Ji" works in a bearing in a bracket J, affixed to the stationary side framing A. The two parts J J carry, respectively, the two members of a clutch Q, which is brought into engagement by the running of the carriage G up to the cylinder B,bnt is thrown out of engagement by the ruiming back of the said carriage. The lower horizontal shaft J', which is shown in Fig. 2, is supported in brackets J, secured on the exterior of one side of its carriage. The upright shaft 1i is represented as receiving rotary motion from the second form-cylinder E through bevel-gears K L, one on the shaft of the said cylinder and thc other on the said shaft Il. The said shaftll gives rotary motion to the shaft J Jzi through bevel-gears M N, one on the upper end of the said shaft II and the other on the front end of said shaft J Jii. The said shaft II gives rotary motion to the shaft J through bevelgears M' N', one on the lower end of the said shaft Hand the other on the front end of the said shaft J. The bevel-gears M' N' are only in gear when the carriage G' is run upto the cylinder '3'. When the carriage is run back, the gear N' goes with it and is disengaged from M. The shafts J Ji and J transmit rotary motion to their respective fountainrollers 7a 7e' through endless screws O O on the rear ends of the said shafts gearing with worm-gears P P' on the shafts of the said rollers. The cylinders m m' each receives rotary motion from its respective fountain-roller through agear 10011 the fountain-roller, gears TOO IIO
11 on the shaft of the cylinder, and intermediate gears 12, running on xed studs 13, as may be understood by reference to Fig. 6, Where the said gears 10 11.12 are shown in dotted outline.
The ductor-rollers n n of the upperl inking apparatus are carried by two opposite sets of arms n* n* on a rock-shaft w, supported in bearings in the sides of the said carriage G, and this rock-shaft has an arm 11, which is kept by a spring 15 in contact with a cam R on the part J of the shaft J J*, the said cam and spring serving to produce the rocking of the said rock-shaft in such a manner as to cause the two ductor-rollers to move to and fro between the ink-cylinders fm and 0,0ne of the said rollers always being in Contact with one of the said cylinders, while the other is in contact with the other of said cylinders. The ductor-rollers of the lower inkiug apparatus are similarly carried in arms n* of a rock-shaft w in the lower carriage G and are similarly operated by means of a cam R on the shaft J and a spring 15, acting upon an arm let of the said rock-shaft fw.
The horizontal shafts J J of the two inking apparatuses carry, respectively, two cams S S for producing' the longitudinal movement of the vibrating' rollers r r and 'r' r and inkcylinders o 0', the said cams acting, respectively, on the arms 16 16 of two vertical rockshafts T T', which are supported, respectively, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5, in bearings 17 on the two carriagesGG the said rock-shafts being furnished with arms 18 18, which engage with grooved heads on the shafts of their respective rollers r r and rr and cylinders o o.
`To facilitate the adjustment of the formrollers iny each carriage Gor G while the carriage is moved back from its respective cylinder, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,1 employ a templet, as may be understood by reference to Figs. 6 and 7. This templet consists of a shaft U, two movable brackets or supportsV for supporting the :ends of said shaft, and the cylindrical sectors W, which are fast upon the said shaft, and the faces of which, concentric with said shaft, are arcs conforming exactly with the arcs of the printing surfaces or plates on the respective formcylinder B or B. Only one of the said brackets and sectors is shown; but that is sufficient for illustration. Then the roller-carriage G or G is run back, the brackets V are secured to the sides of the said carriage by screws 19 in such position that the shaft U occupies a position relatively to the carriage precisely similar to that which the shaft of the formcylinder occupies while the carriage is in operative position relatively to the cylinder. This position is determined by the position of the holes provided in the brackets V and carriage for the screws 19; but the accuracy of the position may be further assured by providing dowel-pins on the brackets to enter other holes in the sides of the carriage, as is a common practice for insuring the proper position of removable' parts of machinery. This templet having been properly placed in the carriage, the bearings t of the several form-rollers s s or s s are adjusted by the screws u to bring all the said rollers into coutact with the sectors 1V, as indicated in Fig. 6. The bearings of the vibrating rollers r r or r r and distributing-rollers p q or p q are then adjusted to bring the said rollers in proper relation to the form-rollers and to each other. The templet is then to be removed from the carriage, and when the carriage is moved forward to its proper position relative to the form-cylinder all of the parts of the inking apparatus are in proper relation to the said cylinder for inking the form or plate thereon.
When the carriages G G and the complete inkin g apparatus therein contained are moved back from their respective cylinders, as illustrated in dotted outline in Fig. 1, there is room for a man to get in between the inking apparatus and the cylinders, and therefore not only can the rollers be easily removed from or replaced inthe carriages, but facility is afforded for doing such work as is necessary on the cylinder.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the two form-cylinders of a rotary perfecting printing-machine and a stationary framing and bearings therein for said cylinders, of a separate carriage and inking apparatus therein for each cylinder' independently movable toward and from its respective cylinder, a shaft on each carriage for transmitting motion to rollers of its respective inking apparatus, a shaft on the stationary' framing in constant gear with one of the cylinders, and gearing between the lastmentioned shaft and the two shafts on the movable carriages, all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the two form-cylinders B B. and their respective inking apparat-us and separately-movable carriages G G therefor, of the rotary horizontal shafts J J and J one on each of said carriages, the cams S S', one on each of said shafts, the upright rock-shafts T T, one on each of said carriages, the arms 16 on said rock-shafts engaging with said cams, the arms 1S on the said rock-shafts engaging with the vibrating inking-rollers, the upright shaft H in constant gear with one of the said cylinders, the two bevel-gears M M on the said shaft H, and the bevel-gears N N on the said horizontal shafts, all substantially as herein described, for producing the longitudinal movement of the said rollers.
3. The combination, with the form-cylinder of a rotary printing-machine, afixed framing containing j ournal-bearings for said cylinder, an ink-roller carriage movable' toward and from said cylinder, and two ink-cylinders 'in said carriage, of a rock-shaft in said carriage,
