As will be apparent, the blocks 23 may be assembled on the machined surface 26 with shims or other devices to insure accurate leveling of the blocks in a horizontal plane, and thus permit the upper surface of the form rolls of the inking mechanisms to be disposed in a common horizontal plane so that the form rolls will contact the printing cylinders under like pressure. 7
The inking mechanism unit of the present invention comprises a housing 25 for holding a supply of ink as well as housing a plurality of rolls, including a form roll, for transferring the ink to the printing cylinder. The base of the housing is formed with a depending dovetailed rib or key 26 accurately machined to fit in the dovetailed groove 22 of the blocks 2| so as to accurately be positioned on the platform. The keys 26 slidably fit in the dovetailed grooves 22 of the blocks 2|, permitting the whole inking mechanism to be removed laterally as a unit from the platform 10 of the machine for replacement or cleaning.
The housing 25 is provided with a longitudinally disposed partition 21 which may terminate short of the bottom of the reservoir (see Fig. 12) to permit the flow of ink from a reservoir section 28 to a roll housing section 29 in which is positioned a fountain roll and doctor blade, transfer rolls, vibrator rolls and a form roll for transferring and uniformly spreading the ink from the reservoir to the form roll as is well understood in the art.
The fountain roll 30 is fixedly mounted in the lower portion of the housing section 29, being secured to a shaft 3| extending through the ends of the housing (see Fig. 10) and preferably consists of a smooth surfaced metal roll of a length corresponding substantially to the length of the form roll which contacts the printing cylinder. Desirably, the fountain roll 30 may be a copper or brass roll having a cadmium or chromium plated surface to provide a smooth surfaced finish. A doctor blade 32 (see Figs. 9, 10 and 12) may be mounted upon a rod 33 journalled in bearings 3A in the ends of the housing 25 and having a longitudinal groove 35 for receiving a looped portion of the doctor blade which may be retained in the groove by a retaining key or rod 35. The blade 32 has an outwardly turned end portion 32 and is preferably formed of or fitted with a bearing surface of softer material than the fountain roll with which it engages.
The doctor blade rod 33 may be suitably actuated to bring the end 32*- of the blade toward and from the surface of the fountain roll 30 to vary the amount of ink picked up by the fountain roll 35. One suitable mechanism for actuating the doctor blade may comprise mechanism for oscillating or rocking the rod 33. This advantageously may be accomplished by means of a of the housing 25 and adapted to be moved by push rods 38 and 39, each engaging the head 3'? above and below the center of the rod 33, respectively. The push rods 38 and 39 may be slidably mounted in a bracket 40 and each is provided with a worm gear H in mesh with a worm G2 on a shaft 43 having an adjusting knob 44. Rotation of the knob in one direction will transmit motion simultaneously to the push rods 38, 39 to move them in opposite directions so that the doctor rod 33 may be rocked optionally in either direction to move the doctor blade 32 toward or away from the fountain roll 30.
The outer terminal edge of the doctor blade 32 is preferably divided into sections as by V- shaped notches 35 at spaced intervals throughout its length (see Fig. 10), and each of these sections is engaged by the end of an adjusting screw threadedly mounted in a part of the housing 25, as for example, of the partition 21. By means of the adjusting screws 45 the selective portions of the doctor blade may be adjusted to bear more tightly or loosely against the fountain roll to compensate for irregularities in the roll to provide a uniform spread of ink thereon or to cut down or close off sections of the roll almost completely as may be desired.
Mounted in the roll portion 29 of the housing 25 and above the fountain roll 30 are a rubber covered transfer roll 50, a pair of metal surfaced vibrator rolls 5|, 52 and a rubber form roll 53 for transferring ink from the surface of the fountain roll to the printing cylinder of the printing press. One of these rolls, for example, the vibrator roll 52, may be rotated in fixed bearings in the ends of the housing 25, and the other rolls, namely the transfer roll 50, the vibrator 5i, and the form roll 53, are preferably mounted in a carriage movable as a unit relative to the housing 25. For this purpose the rolls 50, 5! and 53 may be journaled in end brackets 54 at opposite ends of the housing (see Figs. 3, 4., 5, 6 and 13) each having a laterally extending guide pin 55 adapted to be slidably fitted in the bearings 56 on the end frames of the housing 25. By sliding the pin 55 from the bearings 56 of the housing end plates, the brackets 56 and connecting rolls 56, 5| and 53 may be moved laterally as a unit from the housing, vibrator roll 52 and fountain roll 30.

Thelink 100 of the agitator is advantageously pivoted to the bushing 99-so as to be swung in- I wardly and downwardly back to the :partition 21 4 to permit the rider rolls being moved into and out of position with respect to the form roll as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have provided a simple improved compact inking unit for printing presses particularly of the roll type, in which the unit may be inserted in and removed from the press by slidably engaging or disengaging the rib 26 in the groove 22 of the platform. When the invention is embodied in a multi-color press, and the several inking mechanisms are positioned on the platform l0, they may be simultaneously raised and lowered into and out of engagement with their respective printing members i simply by rotating the shaft 18 in the proper direction.
A machine such as is illustrated diagrammatically in Fig. 1 may advantageously be used for the printing of small articles in multi-colors, for example, labels, wrappers and the like job work; With such work the press may be idle for substantial periods of time, in which case it is desirable to remove the printing mechanism for cleaning and storage. As will be apparent, each printing unit is readily removable laterally from the platform I by simply sliding the housing from the grooved block 2!.
In storing the inking mechanism when not in use, it is desirable that the rubber covered rolls be out of pressure engagement with other rolis,
to avoid damage to the pliable surface. With the present unit this may be accomplished by raising the bracket 9! to release the rider rolls from en gagement with the form roll 53. The carriage 54, carrying the form roll 53, vibrator roll and transfer roll 59 may be then moved transversely of the housing by rotation of the knob 65 to sepa rate these rolls from the fountain roll 3% and vibrator roll 52. The vibrator roll 55 may be moved away from the form roll 53 and transfer roll 50 by releasing the screw and clamp til, permitting the link 51 carrying the vibrator roll shaft 66 to fall away from the carriage 54. Furthermore, the adjusting mechanism for the carriage permits the operator to obtain the desired squeeze between the rolls when setting up the press for use.
Although I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, I do not intend to be restricted thereto as the invention includes equivalent means as may be within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a printing press in combination with a printing roll, an inking mechanism platform provided with a horizontally disposed guideway below and parallel to said roll, an inking mechanism unit comprising a housing providing an ink reservoir and transfer roll mounting, said housing having a guide fitting said guideway whereby said unit may be removed laterally from said platform and means for moving said platform vertically to carry said inking mechanism into and out of inking position.
2. An inking mechanism unit for roll type printing presses comprising a housing providing a roll compartment and an ink reservoir in communication therewith, a fountain roll rotatably mounted in said housing and extending into said roll compartment, a doctor blade bearing on the surface or said fountain roll, the outer terminal edge of said doctor blade being divided into a plurality of sections by notches, the inner edge of said doctor blade being looped, a rod provided with a longitudinal groove for receiving the looped inner edge of said doctor blade, means securing said doctor blade in the groove of said rod, and means mounted on said housing for rocking said rod to vary the pressure of said blade against said roll.
3. An inking mechanism for roll type printing presses comprising a housing provided with an ink reservoir, a plurality of rolls rotatably mounted in said housing on spaced apart fixed axes, a roll carriage reciprocably mounted on said housing and movable relative thereto in a direction normal to the axes of said spaced rolls, a plurality of rolls including transfer and form rolls mounted in said carriage and adapted for coaction with said first named rolls, means mounted on said carriage for moving at least one of the second named rolls axially and parallel to said first named rolls and manually controlled means for moving said carriage optionally to maintain said second named rolls in adjustable pressure engagement with said first named rolls or to move said second named rolls away from the first named rolls.
4. An inking mechanism for roll type printing presses comprising a housing provided with an ink reservoir, a plurality of rolls rotatably mounted in said housing on spaced apart axes, a roll carriage reciprocably mounted on said housing and movable relative thereto in a direction normal to the axes of said spaced rolls. a plurality of rolls mounted in said carriage and adapted for coaction with said first named rolls, manually controlled means for adjustably positioning said roll carriage to move the rolls carried thereby toward and away from said first mentioned rolls, a vibrator roll mounted in said carriage for coacting engagement with the other rolls carried thereby, means for vibrating the vibrator roll axially and parallel to the other of said rolls and means for releasing the vibrator roll from pressure contact with the coa-cting rolls.
5. An inking mechanism for roll type printing presses comprising a housing provided with an ink reservoir, a plurality of rolls rotatably mounted in said housing on spaced apart axes, a roll carriage reeiprocably mounted on said housing and movable relative thereto in a direction normal to the axes of said spaced rolls, a plurality of rolls mounted in said carriage and adapted for coaction with said first named rolls, manually controlled means for adjustably positioning said roll carriage to move the rolls carried thereby toward and away from said first mentioned rolls, a vibrator roll mounted in said carriage, means for continuously moving the vibrator roll axially and parallel to the other of said rolls, a pair of pivotal links mounted on said carriage for holding said vibrator roll in coacting engagement with said other rolls carried thereby, and adjusting means for moving said links relative to said carriage.
6. An inking mechanism for roll type printing presses comprising a housing, a plurality of rolls mounted in saidhousing including a fountain roll, transfer, vibrator and form rolls, means 'mounted on said housing and driven from one j said form roll.
7. An inking mechanism for printing presses comprising a housing providing an ink reservoir and a communicating roll compartment into which ink from said reservoir is adapted to flow, a plurality of ink transfer rolls rotatably mounted in said housing and including a fountain roll having the surface thereof movable in the ink in said roll compartment, and movable impeller means mounted in said reservoir for accelerating the flow of ink from said reservoir to said roll compartment.
8. An inking mechanism for printing presses comprising a, housing providing an ink reservoir and a communicating roll compartment into which ink from said reservoir i adapted to flow,
va plurality of ink transfer rolls rotatably mounted in said housing and including a fountain r011 having the surface thereof movable in the ink in said roll compartment, an impellermounted in said reservoir for accelerating the flow of ink therefrom to said roll compartment, and operative connections between one of said rolls and said impeller.
9. A printing press comprising a frame, a plurality of printing roll mounted on said frame,
an elongated platform disposed below said rolls for moving said platform vertically to simultaneously adjust each of said inking mechanisms into and from cooperatiive inking position with said printing rolls.
