Description

PATENTED MAR. 31. 1908,l .T. G. LILLY. i DEVICE FOR RBMDVING GALKS FROM .HORSESHOES.
A PPLIOATION FILED JAN. 1 6, 1908. Y
Wit" non IJOHN C. LILLY, OF BEDFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR REMOVING CALKS FROM HORSESHOES.
No. :az-33,654.
Application filed January 16, 1908.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, J onN C. LILLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bedford, in the county of Bedford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Removing Calks from Horseshoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and l'igures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices especially adapted forremoving calks from horse shoes and com rises various details of construction, com inations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which z- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a stock made of any suitable material and is provided with a handle B at one end and the opposite end has a threaded aperture O leading through into the rectangular outlined opening D. Fixed within said opening is a jaw E, said jaw having a recessed face E which is slightly beveled or inclined, as will be observed in the sectional view of the drawings. F designates a movable jaw which is also mounted within said opening and has a recessed face F conforming to the shape of said recess E. The opposite faces of the shank portion of the jaw F have channels G therein adapted to receive the ribs II which project from the opposite walls of the opening D. and upon which said jaw is guided as it is moved backward and forward. Upon the opposite walls of the opening in said stock are the shoulders T, upon which shoulders I and J upon the jaws E and F Specification of Letters Patent.

respectively are adapted to rest, the shank portions of the jaws extending through the opening, as noted in the drawings.
K designates a set screw which is mounted in the end of the shank portion of the mov able jaw F and the head of said screw is adapted to bear against the adjacent end of the shank of the jaw E. A screw N is mounted in a threaded aperture in the end of said stock and is adapted to bear frictionally against the end of the movable jaw F, whereby said jaw F may be moved toward the jaw E for the purpose of frictionally gripping the end of a calk to be turned and loosened from a horse shoe. The end of the screw N is recessed as at N and is adapted to receive a pivotal lever O mounted upon a pivot pin The operation of my device is as follows When it is desired to remove a calk from a horse shoe, the two jaws are brought to bear against the circumference of the head of the calk and, by turning the screw against the jaw F, the latter may be clamped securely against the calk which may be securely held by the two jaws, after which by turning a screw with the jaws clamping the head of the calk will afford means whereby the latter may be readily loosened and removed from a shoe.- Owing to the beveled walls in the re cesses of the jaws, when the latter are held securely in clamping relation with the calk, the latter may be securely held and turned with the screw owing to the strong purchase upon the calk.
What I claim to be new is 1. A device for removing calks from horse shoes, comprising a stock having a rectangular outlined opening therein, one end of the stock provided with a threaded aperture leading into said opening, a fixed jaw mounted within said opening, a movable jaw also mounted within said opening, a screw for actuating the movable jaw, a set screw carried by the latter and adapted to bear against the fixed jaw, as set forth.
2. A device for removing calks from horse shoes comprising a stock having a rectangular outlined opening therein, one end of the stock provided with a threaded aperture In testimony whereof jfl .hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN C. LILLY.
