Description

` R. H. WALDRON. Portable Cooking-Furnace.
'Patented March 3o, 1869.
SecZz'On al 22 genital rey -MMMH RICHARD H. WALDRON, OF PORTSMOUTH, `N EW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN J. FLANDERS, OF SAME PLACE.
Laim Paw-m No. 88,352, ma March 3o, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part: of the same.
To alll whom it ma/y conce/m Be it known that I, RICHARD H. WALDRON, of Portsmouth, Rockingham county, in the State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and improved Furnace for Heating and Cooking; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The nature, or essence of my invention consists in constructing a furnace, for charcoal or other fuel, adapted to fit the top openings of a' stove, or range, and provided with a double wall, and with a horizontal passage, arranged beneath the grate, and above the top ofthe stove, or range, so that the draught, after passing up through the fire-box, may then pass down, through the stove, or range, into a chimney, or other Hue, said furnace being also provided with a movable, pyramidal top, for heating sad-irons, and with agrating, closed by a sliding valve, beneath the fire-grate, for letting out the ashes.
In the following description of my invention, I shall refer to the drawings hereinbefore mentioned, ofwhich Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of one of my vfurnaces.
Figure 2, an elevation, partly sectional, and at right angles to that of iig. I.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section at the line z z on [i l.
gFigure 4, a top View.
Figure 5, a cover.
My furnace may be made of castiron, wroughtirou, or clay, or of any or all of these combined; and the outer wall, or case A, may be circular, oval, or polygonal in form, the inner wall, or re-box B, being made of'a corresponding shape, or otherwise, as may be preferred.
Sufficient space is left between the two walls to form a flue, D, for the draught, the outer wall, A, also extending above the fire-box, so that when a kettle or other utensil is placed on the top, the draught may pass out of the top of the lire-box into't-he flue D.
vIf preferred, the inner wall may be made to extend only partially around inside the outer case, so as to form one or more ues on the sides of the fire-box, which, in this case, might be formed partly by the outside wall, and partly by the inner wall or walls of the due or dues.
The air-passage E extends through the furnace, beneath the fire-box B, under the fire-grate C, said passage being provided with a door', or damper at each end, for admitting or excluding air, as required, and with a grating, F, or other opening, in the bottom, furnished with a movable valve, or door, to he opened when it is required to discharge the ashes falling from the grate O into the stove, or range beneath.
The projection I at the bottom is intended to be set into the top opening of a stove, or range, so as to connect the furnace with a chimney, or other flue.
For cooking, heating water, and similar operations,
the kettle or other utensil is to be placed so as to cover the top of the case A, a fire having been previously kindled upon the grate C, the passage E being open, to admit air, and the opening F being closed. The air, or draught, then, passing through E and the fire-box B, comes directly in contact with the utensil placed on A, and,'desceudingthrough the flue D,'passes, on either side of the passage E, into the stove, or range, upon which the furnace is set, the sides ofthe passage E being extended, so as to meet the Walls of the firebox, as shown in the drawings.
For heating {iat-irons, the cone, or dome G, having an opening, J, through its top, for the draught to pass out, is placed upon the fire-box, and the pyramidal cover H put over it, upon the case A. The irons to be heated are set against the slopingsidesof H, upon the projections K, formed to support them.
In the drawings, the cover H is shown as hexagonal; but it may have more or fewer sides, as may be preferred. In this case, the course of the draught will be the same as before, except that it will pass up through J, and descend between G and H, communicating heat to the latter, for heating the irons placed against it.
In kindling a tire, and also at other times, it may be convenient to h. Ve a cover, L, to place upon the case A, to prevent the escape of smoke and lnoxious gases into the room.
This case should be kept always covered, when there is a ire in the furnace, except when necessarily opened for adding fuel, or some otherl purpose.
By the above-described construction and arrangement, a cheap furnace is produced, which may be used upon a stove, or range with great convenience and economy in warm weather, or whenever its use can be substituted for that of the stove, or range itself.
I contemplate making my furnaces oblong, or oval, so that a plate may be applied to the top, with two or more openings, for kettles, &c., in which case thc in-` ner dome and pyramidal cover, for heating irons, may be made to correspond, in general outline, with the shape of the furnace.
l. In combination with a furnace constructed substantially as herein described, I claim the interior dome, G, and the exterior pyramid, H, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. A
2. In combination with such a furnace, I also claim the register F, under the grate, for letting the ashes down into the stove, or range beneath, substantially as described.
3. I claim.the arrangementof the horizontal passage E and grate O above the top of the stove, or range, whereby the draughtis admitted Without descending, and the fire may be raked without removing the furnace from its place.
