UNITED STATES MARY E. PARIS, OF NEWKIRK, OKLAHOMA.
REMOVABLE UMBRELLA-COVERING.
No. 883,476. Specification of Application filed April 13,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY E. PAnis, a citizen of the United States, residing at News kirk, in the county of Kay, Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Umbrella-Coverings and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description. of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to umbrellas and parasols and has for its object to provide a detachable cover for a parasol or the like so that several such covers may be em loyed upon the same frame, when desired, or example when it is desired to substitute a cover of one color for a cover of another color or when it is desired to substitute for a parasol cover a waterproof cover so as to convert the parasol into an umbrella.
The invention resides, more specifically in the provision of a means for securing the edges of the cover to the ends of the ribs of the frame of the parasol or the like, means for securing the cover at the seams to the ribs, and means located centrally of the cover for engagement with the end of the staff of the parasol to center the cover upon the frame, all of which features go to produce the result stated, namely the provision of devices whereby the cover may be attached to and detached from the frame without disarrangin any of the fixed parts of the frame.
n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a parasol showing in general the manner of attachin the cover thereto, Fig. 2 is a detail sectiona view through the end of one of the frame ribs showing the connection therewith of one of the devices for securing the edges of the cover to the ends of the ribs, Fig. 3 is a similar view but taken about the middle of one of the ribs showing the manner of connecting one of the devices for securing the cover at its seams to the ribs, Fig. 4 is a similar view taken through the ferrule at the center of the cover, Fig. 5 is a detail side elevation of one of the seam securing devices, Fig. 6 is a transverse detail sectional view therethrou 'h, Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of one of the cover edge securing devices, and, Fig. 8 is a detail perspective'view of the pin for securing the ferrule to the staff.
In the drawings there is shown a parasol Letters Patent. Patented March 31, 1908.

ribs of the frame. Extending from this socket is a flat tongue 16 which is provided with a number of perforations 17 which enable the edge of the cover to be sewed to the tongue. It will be understood of course that the devices just mentioned are formed of resilient sheet metal stamped to the required form as described above and that their engagement with the ball ends of the ribs is not a permanent one. It will also be understood that the said devices are equal in number to the number of ribs.
In order that the cover may be secured at its seams to the ribs about their middle, I provide devices which will now be described. Each of the said devices comprises a sheet metal clip 18 which is of such form as to be engageable upon the ribs and to partially embrace the same and pivoted in cars 19 formed at one of the ends of the clip is a pin 20 which is bowed as illustrated in the drawings to form two spaced fingers. These fingers are adapted to extend over the curved or outer side of the rib to which the device is applied and to be engaged each with a resilient guard or keeper 21 formed integral with the other end of the clip. Before this latter engagement is had, however, the pin is passed through the seam of the cover and consequently the cover is secured to the ribs intermediate the ends thereof.
Located centrally of the cover is a ferrule 22 which is engageable over the outer end of the staff of the frame and formed through 7 this ferrule at diametrically opposite points are slots 23 which, when the ferrule is in position upon the staff are adapted to register with a slot 24 formed through the said staff. Through these slots is adapted to be engaged a pin 25 which is flat and is reduced at and adjacent its middle so that after it has been engaged through the slots, it may be turned at right angles thereto and thereby serve to hold the ferrule upon the staff. If desired a chain 26 may be connected with the pin and with the ferrule to prevent the loss of the pin should it become disengaged from the ferrule and the stafi.
What is claimed is The combination with a parasol frame including a stafi and ribs, of a cover adapted for detachable engagement upon the frame, means located at the edge of the cover and engageable detachably With the ends of the ribs for securing the edge of the cover to the ribs at this point, means separate from the cover for securing the same to the ribs adjacent their middle, said means comprising a clip adapted to engage the rib of the umbrella and having pins pivoted thereto embracing the rib, the pins being adapted to be passed through the edges of the seamed part of the cover and engaged on their ends With a keeper, a ferrule located centrally of the cover and engageable over the end of the staff, and a pin for securing the ferrule in this engagement.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature, in presenceof tWo Witnesses.
