Description

PATBNTED MAR. a1, 190s. T. GABRIELE.
ENvBLoP. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 8, 1907.
T Enron,
@my @a f Uro/Mfrs TERESINA GABRIELE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Fatented March 31, 1908.
Appneation filed August s, 1907. serial No. 387,617.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, TERESINA GABRIELE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Envelope, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to envelops, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be securely fastened or sealed without the aid of muoilage and which when so sealed cannot be opened without destroying the envelop or a part thereof, and thus leaving evidence of the fact that the said envelop had been opened.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in wh'ch,-
Figure 1 is an inside plan view of a blank from which my improved envelop is made;
Fig. 2 an enlarged section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 an enlarged section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 g Fig. 4 a back view of an en-A velop constructed according to my invention and showing the same sealed; Fig. 5 an enlarged section on the line .5-5 of Fig. 4 and on an enlarged scale; and, Fig. 6 a plan view of a detail of my improved envelop.
In the practice of my invention I cut from any suitable paper or other material the blank shown in Fig. 1, and comprising a body portion a having opposite folding end portions l), a folding side portion c and a sealing flap CZ opposite the folding side portion c. The folding side portion c is provided with a slot cZ and the folding end portions l) with similar slots 52.
Placed below the slot 52 in one of the folding end portions b and on the inner side of said folding end portions is a wire link or loop c which is secured in position by means of a ysmall sheet f of paper or other suitable material which is secured to said folding end member b by being sealed thereto, and the sheet f is provided in the edge thereof, which extends in the same direction as the sealing flap d, with recesses between which is a projecting tongue f3. The tongue f3 passes under the corresponding side of the link or loop e and secured to said side of said link or loop is a small sheet g, one edge of which is folded around said side of said link or loop, and said sheet g is sealed. to the back of the said folding member l).
The sealing iiab d is provided with a projecting tongue d2 having a thickened transverse shoulder or projection d3 on its outer side between which and the tongue d2 is an lopening or shallow pocket d4, and the tongue d2 is provided on its inner side with a thickened shoulder or projection d5 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The transverse shoulder or projection d on the outer side of the tongue d2 is preferably formed by folding the said tongue itself, and the transverse shoulder or projection d5 on the inner side of said tongue is preferably formed by a supplemental strip d folded and placed beneath the end of the tongue d2 which is folded backwardly over the main part of said tongue as clearlyshown in Fig. 2.
In forming the envelop from the blank, the folding end member with which the parts f and g are connected is first folded over the body portion a, and the tongue f3 is passed outwardly through the slot b2 in said folding end member as shown in Fig. 3. The other folding end member l) is then folded over as shown in Fig. 4 and the tongue f3 is passed outwardly through the slot b2 formed therein. The folding side member c is then folded as shown in Fig. 4 and the tongue f3 passed outwardly through the 'slot c2 formed therein. The envelop is now ready to be sealed, and after the desiredcontents have been placed therein the sealing flap d is folded over as shown in Fig. 4 and the tongue d2 is passed inwardly through the registering `slots c2 and b2 in the folding side member c and end members b as clearly shown in Fig. 5, this operation being preferably performed by means of a thin strip h of wood or other suitable material indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the end of said strip being insertedinto the pocket or opening d4. When the tongue d2 is passed fully through the slots or openings c2 and b2 as shown in Fig. 5', the transverse shoulder d5 on the inner side of said tongue will engage the transverse shoulder 'i formed by the link c and the fold of the part g thereover on the inner side of the envelop or on the first folded end member t, and the envelop will be securely sealed and cannot be opened without tearing 0H the tongue d2 of the sealing flap d, and in the above described operation the tongue f3 forms a guide for the tongue d2 when the latter is passed inwardly through the folded end members b and folding side members c as hereinbefore described.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 5 is on a much enlarged scale in order to clearly show the construction and operation of the parts as hereinbefore described,
My invention is not limited to the use of any particular material inthe construction of the envelop and a sealing envelop or package of any desired dimensions and strength may be made in this manner. f
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An envelop' made from a blank comprising a body portion having folding end members, a folding side portion and a folding sealing flap opposite the folding side portion, said end members and folding side portion being provided with a slot and the sealing flap with a projecting tongue, one of the folding end members being provided on the inner side thereof and on the side of the slot therein opposite the folding sealing 'liap with a wire link or loop which is secured in position by a sheet sealedr to said folding end member and provided with a tongue adapted to be passed through the slot in said folding end member, and the slots in the other folding end member and the folding side member, and a small sheet folded around the side of said link or loop adjacent to the said slot and sealed to the back of the said folding end member on the opposite side of said slot, the tongue of the sealing flap being also provided on its opposite sides with transverse shoulders or projections and being adapted to be passed through the Aslots in the folding end members and folding side member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 7th day of August, 1907.
