GEORGE C, 'STEINIIAUEIL OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
i Letters .Patent No. 88,343, dated ll/[arch 30, 1869.
IMPROVED ATOMATIC FAN.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent` and making part of the name.
Tn all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. STEINHAUER, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion, and in the State of Indiana, have invented an Improved Automatic Fan; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference. marked thereon.
VThe nature of my invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the several devices for giving an oscillating motion to the fau, as hereinafter more fully described. 4
Said device to be made of wood and metal, wire, or any other suitable and convenient materials.
To enable others skilled in the art to make vand use my said invention, I proceed to describeit more fully as follows:
A B, ofthe accompanying drawing, is ahollow wooden drum, or shield, of the shape there represented, in which the side A B next to the board.
S is the hole, through which the key is introduced to Wind up the machinery.
T is the handle of a spring-bolt, with which it is to Q R is an annular slot, through which the arm F reaches the wheel-work.
C is the socket, into which the arm D E is let, to steady it. v
G I K L M is the oscillating frame that is to cany the fan. This frame is secured in its place by being coiled round the arm D E, at N and O.
P is a counterpoise, which is adjusted by turning it on the screw H.
When the drum A B has been fastened to the headboard, as aforesaid, and the arm D E, and the frame F G I K L M, and the other parts all in their proper places, as aforesaid, and as represented in said drawing, a cloth, of 'convenient size, is hung on the straight arm D E, so that it will hang down over the side K L M of the said oscillating frame, and the Wheel-Work inthe said drum A B wound up, and bolt T drawn out, then the wheel-Work, which is attached to the arm F, bymeans of a convenient crank, or eccentric, will oscillate the said frame F G I K L M, back and forth, and carry the cloth with it, so that it will fan the person lying in bed, until the wheel-work is run down.
What I claim, and desire to secure, by Letters Patent, is-
The oscillating frame F Gr I K L M, in combination lwith the counterpoise P, screw H, and arm D Effor giving an oscillating motion to the fan, substantially as herein described, for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing specification, I have hereunto set my hand, this 1st day of March, 1869. Y
GEORGE C. STEINHAUER. Witnesses: l
