Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 398,979.
To all whom it may concern: i a lfiBe it known that I, JOHN B. RENO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Swings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in harness swings for fire, patrol, and ambulance service.
The object of the invention is to provide an apparatus for suspending and releasing harness, which will be simple, and practical in construction and very effective in operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved harness swing; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a vertical, sectional view, taken on the plane indicated by the line 3*3 in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detail, vertical, longitudinal sectional view; and Fig. 5 is a detail, horizontal, sectional view, taken on the plane indicated by the line 55 in Fig. 1.
The improved harness swing comprises a hanger or body portion 1 of angular form having a horizontally extending branch 2 and a vertically-extending branch 3 formed at its top with an eye to receive a suspending cable or the like. The horizontal branch 2 is recessed to provide the socket 4, in which is removably secured by a set screw 4 an extension bar 5. The latter has adjustably secured upon its outer end, which latter extends rearwardly, a head 6, in which is a transversely adjustable cross bar 7 The head 6 is in the form of a metal block having openings or sockets arranged in planes at right angles to each other and adapted to receive the bar 5 and the cross bar or rod7 set screws 8, 9 being provided in the block to respectively engage the parts 5, 7 and hold them in adjusted positions. The ends of the cross bar 7 are curved rearwardly and have adjustably mounted upon them by means of set screws 10, blocks 11, which are formed with harness engaging hooks 12.
The hanger'l is formed at its angle with a downwardly-extending enlargement 13, which is provided with a vertically extending slot 14. The latter extends upwardly into the vertical branch 3 of the hanger and opens upon its rear face as well as its front face. Pivotally mounted in the slot 14:, by means of a screw, bolt or the like 15, is a bell-crank 16, the arm or branch 17 of which extends forwardly and has adjustably mounted upon its outer end by means of a set screw 18 a block 19 formed with a harness-engaging hook 20. The upper arm 21 of the bell-crank 16 is adapted to swing into the portion of the slot 14 in the hanger branch 3 and has upon its upper or outer end a right angularly-projecting tongue 22 provided with a beveled lower edge 23 and a notch 24 formed in said edge. This arm 21 and its tongue 22 form a latch, which is adapted to coact with a spring-actuated keeper 25 arranged for sliding movement upon a rear face of the upright branch 3 of the hanger. This keeper 25 is in the form of a plate having a reduced portion to slide upon the rear face of the branch 3 between vertically extending flanges 26 formed on the sides of the latter, said plate being retained between said flanges by a cover plate 27 secured in recessed seats28 formed in said flanges, by screws 29. The latter pass through apertured ears formed on the sides of the cover plate and into threaded recesses or openings formed in lugs or ears 30 proj ecting from the opposite sides of the branch 3. The upper end of the keeper plate 25 is adapted to enter the notch 24 formed in the tongue 23 on the bell-crank, and it is disengaged from said notch by means of a lever 31 pivoted intermediate its ends between a .pair of cars 32 formed on the upper edge of the branch 4 of the hanger. The rearwardly extending end of the lever is formed with an eye with which may be engaged an operating cord or the like, and its inner end is pivoted by a pin 33 in the bifurcated or slotted lower end of the keeper plate 25, said end of the plate 25 being bent to form sockets for the pin 33, as clearly shown in the drawings.
Pivoted upon a screw, bolt or the like 34 in the extreme lower end of the slot 14 is a hook arm or lever 35. The free end of this lever 35 is in the form of a hook to engage and sup port a portion of the harness, and formed upon its inner end is a concentrically arranged series of teeth 36, which form a segmental gear. These teeth 36 mesh with similar teeth 37 arranged upon the bell-crank 16 at its angle, so that when said bell-crank is swung upon its pivot 15, the harness-engaging hook or lever 35 will be also swung upon its pivot 34. upwardly by a flat spring 38 secured to the branch 2 of the hanger between its ears 32 and having a free end to bear against the bottom of the forward end of the lever, as clefily shown in Fig. 4.
In use, the device or apparatus is suspended in the usual manner from the eye at the top of the branch 3 of the hanger and when the bell-crank 16 is swung upwardly and the tongue 22 on the arm 21 of the same passes into the upper end of the slot 14, the beveled end 23 of said tongue will engage the upper end of the keeper plate 25 and force the latter downwardly until the notch 24 in said tongue alines with it, thereupon the spring 38 forces the keeper plate upwardly into the notch and locks the bell-crank in its normal position shown in Fig. 1. -When the bell-crank is swung to this position, the harness engaging hook or lever 35 will also be swung upwardly. When it is desired to release the harness, the operating cord, cable, chain or the like attached to the lever 31 is drawn upon to swing said lever and thereby actuate the keeper plate 25 to disengage it from the notch in the tongue 22. When the bell-crank 16 is thus released, the weight of the harness swings its arm 17, the arm 35 and also the branch 4 of the device downwardly, so that the different portions of the harness drop off of the hooks 20, 35 and 12, as will be readily understood. This apparatus is of simple, strong and durable constructionand very quick and effective in operation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A harness suspending and releasing apparatus comprising a hanger of angular form, means for suspending portions of a harness from one branch of the hanger, a bell-crank fulcrumed to the other branch of the hanger and having one arm provided with means for suspending a portion of a harness, the other arm of said bell-crank forming a latch member, and a coacting latch member upon the bell-crank carrying branch of said hanger.
2. A harness suspending and releasing apparatus comprising a hanger of angular form, means for suspending portions of a harness from one branch of the hanger, a bellcrank fulcrumed to the other branch of the hanger and having one arm provided with means for suspending a portion of a harness,
the other arm of said bell-crank having a beveled tongue formed with a notched portion, and a spring-actuated sliding keeper upon the bell-crank carrying branch of said The keeper plate 25 is forcedhanger to engage the beveled portion of the tongue and to enter the notch therein.
3. A harness suspending and releasing apparatus comprising a hanger of angular form, Tneans for suspending portions of a harness from one branch of the hanger, a bellcrank fulcrumed to the other branch of the hanger andhaving one arm provided with means for suspending a portion of a harness, the other arm of said bell-crank having a beveledmeans for suspending portions of a harness from one branch of the hanger, a bell-crank fulcrumed to the other branch of the hanger and having one arm provided with means for suspending a portion of a harness, a latch device for securing the other arm of the bell crank to the branch of the hanger on which said bell-crank is fulcrumed, a harness suspending arm pivoted upon said hanger, and meshing segmental gears provided u on said harness suspending arm and said be l crank.
5. A harness suspending and releasing apparatus comprising a hanger, harness suspending arms pivoted thereto and carrying segmental gear portions in mesh with each other, and a latch device for locking one of said arms against movement with respect to the hanger.
6. A harness suspending and releasing apparatus comprising an angular hanger having vertically and horizontally extending branches, the former being slotted and the latter provided with a socket, an extension bar detachably secured in the socket oi the horizontal branch, a cross bar adjustably mounted upon said extension bar, and means at its ends for engaging portions of a harness, a bell-crank pivoted in the slotin said hanger and having one of its arms formed with a notched and beveled tongue, a harness engaging hook upon the other arm of said bellcrank, a sliding spring actuated keeper plate upon the vertical branch of the hanger to coact with said tongue, and a lever for operating said keeper.
