To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, DAVID DUBENDORF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hose Clamp Appliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesto hose clamp appliers, and particularly to a tool for applying wire hose clamps of the U-type, in which the ends of the wire of the clamp are interloeked with the bight portion thereof and turned back to prevent disconnection.
The object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character by which such clamps may be quickly, conveniently and tightly applied. i
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangen'ient of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side view of the tool, illustrating in dotted line the operative movement of the strainer-bar. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the tool. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the block carrying the stationary clamps. Fig. 5 is a side View of the hose clamped to a pipe or coupling by the tie. Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view of the same.
The tool is employed for applying wire clamps of the construction shown in. Figs. 5 and 6 to hose pipes for the purpose of fastening the same to couplings or iiuid conductors and as therein shown it will be seen that the clamp l comprises a ring formed, from a single piece of wire bent primarily into U-form, the ends 2 of the wire being passedv through the space between the arms of the loop at the closed end thereof and interlocked with the bight portion 3 by bending them back to form locking hooks engaging said bight portion. Clamps of this type may be purchased in the open market in the form disclosed ready for application to the hose, it being understood that in the operation of the present tool a clamp which loosely fits the hose is employed and is drawn or strained into clamping engagement therewith.
The tool comprises a head composed of a pair of parallel plates 4 having straight front edges and provided at their upper forward ends with extensions 5, the front portionsl of the plate being held in spaced relation by distance blocks or pieces 6 and 7. The blocks or pieces G may be integral with the plates and. are arranged to act in conjunction with the blocks 7 to provide a vertical guide-way for a sliding strainer-bar 8 formed at its up' per end with a transverse groove 9 and a lip or projection 10. The rear portions of the plates are held spaced by the oblique arm 1l of a straining lever l2 pivotally mounted on -a pin 13 passing through the plates, the forward. end of the arm l l being provided with a rounded projection or knuckle 14 loosely fitting within a recess 15 formed by a pair of spaced lugs on the rear of the bar 8, by which said lever is pivotally connected with the bar to slide the same up and down.
A clamping lever 16 is arranged at the front of the head and providedv with a central rearwardly extending lug 17 pivotally mounted in any suitable manner between the plates to adapt said lever to have a rocking movenient. The lower arm 18 of the lever is piv otally connected by links 19 arranged on opposite sides of the head with the arms of the bifurcated portion of a combined operating lever and handle 1Q, the bifurcated ortion of which is pivotally connected with the lower rear portion of the head by a pin 20.
The upper arm 2l of the lever 18 is formed with a pair of inwardly extending rigid clamping jaws 22 beveled on their upper and lower surfaces to points at their free edges and provided in their upper faces with downwardly and inwardly extending grooves 23. These jaws are adapted to project between opposite sets or pairs of upper and lower relatively stationary clamping jaws 24 and 25 formed upon and extending laterally from the distance block 7, which is preferably made of some durable metal and is fastened between the upper front corner portions of the plates 4 in any preferred manner. Between these sets of jaws the block 7 is formed to provide a beveled boss 26 adapted to be received in the space between the jaws '22 of the lever 16 when the latter is in clamping position. The lower jaws 25 are provided in their front edges with grooves 27 and are arranged in advance of the front edges of the aws 24, which are beveled to bending edges, as indicated at 28. The strainer-bar S and remaining parts of the tool normally lie in the positions shown in Fig. 1,'and a latch device 29 is provided to lock the strainerebar normally in its lowered position. This latch. device 1s pivotally mounted upon one of the plates 4 and is provided at its inner end with a locking pin 30 movable through an opening in said plate to engage a notch or recess 31 in the rear edge of the bar. The outer end of the lever forms a finger-piece 32 between which and the adjacent side of the lever 16 is arranged a spring 33 operating to normally hold said locking device in locking position.
In operation, a clamp 1 of the construction described and of a size to loosely fit upon the hose is placed thereon after the hose has been applied to the ipe or coupling. rlhe tool and hose are t en so relatively positioned that the hose extends transversely above the block 7 and lever 16, the hooked ends 2 of the tie 1 being passed downwardly between the sets of jaws 22, 24 and 25 and passed under the jaws 25 and arranged to lie in the recesses 27 thereof, and the bight portion 3 of the tie finally fitted into engagement with the lip 10 of the straining lever 8, so that it will rest into the groove 9. The lever 12 may then be employed as a stationary handle in conjunction with the lever 19 as a movable handle, whereby the latter may be swung upward to rock the lever 16 to swing its jaws 22 inwardly, which jaws will thereby pass into the spaces between the sets of jaws 24 and 25 and crimp the hooks 2 therein, which hooks will extend through the grooves 23 and 27, whereby the locking ends of the wire clamp will be tightly held from movement and arranged to lie at the proper angle. The clamps being held in such position by the lever 19, which may be now employed as a stationary handle, the latch 29 is released, and the lever 12 as a movable handle pressed downward to slide the straining-bar 8 upward, by which the bight portion 3 of the tie held in engagement with the lip 10 will be strained or drawn u on to contract the tie and draw it into c ose clamping engagement with the hose, which will thereby be firmly fastened to the pipe or coupling, after which the bar 8 is retracted by the lever l2 and the jaws 22 retracted by the lever 19 to release the tie from the tool. In the straining operation above described, it will be understood that the oppration of moving the bight 3 upwardly w ile the ends 2 are being held results in the arms of the wire clam being moved through the bight portion to craw the clamp closely around the hose without liability of impairing the locking efficiency of the hooked ends 2 which are held in their normal locking position by the action of the clamps. After the a plication of the tie or clamp the hooked en s 2, which are lengthened by the straining action, may be cut oil' as short as desired to make them lie as closely as possible to the hose.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation and advantage of improved wiring deviceV will be readily understood, and it will be seen that the invention provides a simple and effective device, whereby a clamp or tie of the character described may be quickly, conveniently and tightly applied.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A tool for applying annular wire clamps of the type described to hose comprising a head carrying stationary clamps, a pivoted clamp to coperate therewith, a pivoted lever for operating the pivoted clamp, a sliding strainer bar, and a pivoted operating lever therefor pivotally connected with said bar.

A tool for app ying annular Wire clamps of the type described to hose comprising a head carrying pairs of superposed stationary clamping jaws, the lower clamping jaws being formed in their forward edges with grooves and projecting in advance of the upper clamping jaws, the latter being provided with bending edges, a clamping leverv pivotally mounted upon the forward portion of the head and having a pair of pointed clamping jaws to move between the pairs of stationary jaws, a strainer bar arranged to slide upon the head in rear of said stationary clamping jaws, a pivoted lever for operating the clamping lever, a locking means for holding the bar inoperative, and a pivoted lever for sliding said bar.

A tool for applying annular wire clamps y of the type described to hose comprising a head carrying stationary clamping jaws, a pivoted clamping lever carrying cooperating clamping jaws, an operating lever therefor fulcrumed on the head, a link connection between said lever and the clamping lever, a strainer bar slidably mounted on the head, and an operating lever therefor fulcrumed on the head and pivotally connected to said bar.
5. A tool for applying annular U-shaped ties to hose, comprising a head, stationary clamps u on the head, a movable clamp to operate t ierewith to hold the ends of the tie, means for operating said movable clamp, a sliding strainer bar to engage the bight of the tie and draw thereon to contract the tie about the hose, locking means for normally holding said bar inoperative, and means for actuating said bar.
