TRY-SQUARE.

Application filed June 28, 1906, SerialjNo.'323,808. Renewed September 6, 1907. Serial No. 301,700.'
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. lMoCUnDY, va citizen of the United States, residing Aat San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Try-Squares, of which the i fol owing is a specification. j n
The invention relates to an improvement Iin try squares, comprehending specifically a means whereby the square may be readily adjusted for serving as a miter or` bevel square.'A f.
Thel main object of the present inventionis the production of a try square provided with an adjustable member adapted when in normal position to form apart ofhthe square. stock, and attached to bel adjusted to provide avparticular angle of inclination relative tb the edge of the blade of the square, thereby rendering the ordinary try squareA adjustable to form a bevel or try square.
The invention will be describediin the following specification, ,reference being had' particularly to the accompanying drawings, 1n which:-` '4 Figure A1 is a view in elevation of a vtry square provided with my improvement, Fig. 2 is alrear elevation of the'same, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig.v l showing thefdevice adjusted for use as a bevel square, Fig. 4 is AReferring to the drawings, wherein similar reference numerals .indicate like parts throughout the several views., the try square proper is 'of ordinary form comprising a stock l. to which is secured the blade 2, the latter being preferably graduated along one ed'o'e in inches and fractions thereof, as at 3, al of which parts are ofthe usual or any preferred 4 construction.y
The improved attachment comprises an arm Li coextensive in length and thickness with the stock l, but of materially less width.' The arm 4 is formed with acentrally disposed longitudinalljT arrangedslot 5 extendin the greater portion of the length. thereof an of a width to receive the blade 2. The slotv 5 opens through relatively inner or pivoted end of the arm, dividing the arm into practically two sections for the greater portionof its length, which sections are designed to embrace the blade 2 ofthe square, as shown i'n Fig. .4, 4Each of the sections of the arm at- 'the free end is formed with an extension 6,
having' a free relatively rear face or edge 7 curved concentric to the pivot-pin 8 of the arm, as clearly shown in the drawings. Each of the extensions 61s seated in a correspondingly recessed portion .9 of the' stock, the Wall of the recess 9 and the curved face 7 ofl the etensionl serving `to accurately guide the arm in movement. The pivotal connection of the arm is preferaliily disposed near the vgage edge of the blade, and the length ofthe slot 5 is such as to permit independent movement of' the arm without obstruction from the edge of the blade. .A guiding strip 10-is h secured to the arm nearthe `freeend of the latter, being preferably' curved concentric to the' lane of movement of the armand being guidped inl operation in` an appropriately shaped guideway l1 formed transverselyof. the stock-1. A binding screw 1,2, operatively envaginga wear platev 13 secured in the stock,
' is esigned to coperate with the guide' strip 10-and engage the latter to secure the arm 4 in adjusted position relative to the blade.
One face of the blade 2 is preferably provided with a series of indicating lines 14,-v forming the usual lines of bevel in cutting rafters or the like, while the opposite facev of the blade is formed with a second series of indicating lines 15 marked to indicate de grecs of angle relative to the operative edge p f .the blade, providing the ordinarymiter me. y
The face or free edge ofthe arm 4 is, .of`
course, designed to provide a true right angle with the operative edge or edges of the blade 2, so that when the arm is in normal posit-Ion,
asshown ,in Fig. l, the device as a whole forms the usual try square, beingad: pted for all purposes for which vsuch an artic e is designed. When, however, itis desired to adjust the device to provide a bevel or miter square, the binding screw 'l2 is loosened and the arm 4 turned on its pivot 8 until the forward or bearing face thereof registers with the one of the particular indicating line de sired. to engage the guide strip and secure the arm in such adjusted position, whereupon said arm forms in ellect the stock of the s 'uare withwhich the operative edge of the lade forms a definite angular relation. A s 4the arm 4 is arranged on both sides of the blade it isapparent that the registration ofxthe operative face-ofY the' armqwith either the roe The said binding screw is tightened combining therewith e, bevel -and miters nere. VFurthermore, es lthe crm 4 is the e estive gagging surface in the use of thev de- Vice esl a try squfire, bevell square or miter square the particular angular relationof the ordinary stock with the blade is not Inateria1,'
thereby dispensing with the cere in construction heretofore necessary 1n insuring a' true right angle between the face ef the stock and the edge of the blade; es the ad-` ustment of the erin l Will insure such anguar relation at will.
Haring thus described invention what :5; is claimed as new,
