CAR-DOOR HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 24, 1908.
Application filed November 16, 1907. Serial No. 402,384.
Be it known that I, THADDEUS S. MERRI- MAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to car door hangers, especially designed for railway street cars and sliding doors.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a sliding car door with hangers of a novel construction, which will permit the door to be completely opened and closed, and will prevent the door from becoming detached from its support.
The invention comprises suitable tracks to support the door, in combination with hangers of novel form, and a stop device adapted to be engaged by said hanger.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and its features of novelty will be set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure l is an elevation of a portion of the side of a car equipped with my improved door, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner side of the door, Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the side of the car and of the door with parts in elevation, Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the track on which the hanger rollers travel, Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of one of the hangers, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the other hanger.
The reference numeral 1 designates the side of a car provided with the usual opening 2, adapted to be closed by a sliding door 3. To the lower edge of the side 1 is secured an angle plate 4 which together with an angle bracket 5 secured to the side 1 below the opening 2 therein serves as a guide for the door. Adjacent to the upper edge of the side 1 of the car is secured a track 6 by bolts 7, and spaced away from the side of the car also by a central stop lug 8 which is preferably circular in cross section.
To the upper corners of the door 3 are secured the oppositely disposed hangers, each consisting of a simple piece of metal comprising parallel vertical plates 9 and 10 connected at their upper ends, and parallel horizontal arms 11 which embrace the opposite sides of the door and are secured thereto by bolts 12. The vertical plates 9 and 10 of the hangers provide housings for grooved rollers 13 mounted upon pins 14 and supported upon the track.
The inner edge of each of the plates 10 of the hangers is formed with a semi-circular recess 15, said recesses being adapted to -re ceive the circular stop 8 as shown. These slotted plates 10 and the central stop 8 constitute the distinguishing features of the invention, the slots 15 permitting the door 3 to fullyopen and close to cover and uncover the door opening 2 without having the edge of the door projecting beyond theside wall of the openin Having ully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
A door hanger comprising a pair of suspension devices, each consisting of an inner and an outer angle-shaped member formed of a vertical and a horizontal arm, said members arranged in parallelism with respect to each other and the vertical arms thereof connected together at their top, the vertical arm drical recess in close proximity to its lower end, said recess constituting a clearance, and said horizontal arm of each of said members provided with a plurality of openings, and a roller journaled between the vertical arms of said members in close proximity to the top.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
