The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sam.
To all whom 'it may concern Beit known that I, G. F. HAReIs, of Decatur, in the county of Macon, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dry-Goods Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction .of a machine for winding cloth, one side of the frame of which is made adjustable. In this frame I place a series of rollers and convexed boards, under and overwhich, alternately, the goods are passed, in order to give them the desired tension before being rolled on the board usedfor that purpose.
My invention also consists in the .use of two convexed boards, soarranged, in relation to each other, that the goods, while passing over one and under the other board, will be caused to spread, and by this means remove all folds, or tendency to wrinkle, the result generally of the tight tension required to roll the goods in a compact form. This object is most eifectually obtained in double-fold goods, as, by the peculiar arrangement of these convexed boards, the same tension is placed upon the lower fold as upon the upper one.
Y My invention is simple, not liable to get out of order, can be constructed at a small cost, and enables4 the goods to be rolled more compactly than by the old hand-method, and at the same time gives them a much better shape for shipment.
To enable others skilled inthe art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and 'opelatom A is one side of the main frame, to which is securely fastened one end of the rollers, and one side of the frame of theconvexed boards.
A is the other, or adjustable side of the main frame, and is provided with a series of holes, through which pass the tension-rollers, B B1 B2.
This side, A', can be moved up to or away from the side A, by means of the tension-rollers B B, so as to accommodate the machine to any width of goods, it being held in position by means of the thumb-screws a al.
Both of the sides A Afare provided, at the top, with a metallic cap, Gr G.
C is the frame containing the convexed boardsc c,
they being securely fastened together at each end, by a brace, c'I
This frame C is provided with slots, in which it and work the convexed boards c c.
It is also provided with holes, through which pass the tension-rollers Bl B.
The board c is convexed on both edges, for the purpose of keeping the two boards in the same relative position to each other, in regard to their convexity, no matter atwhat width the frame may be adjusted.
One side of the frame O is securely fastened to the side, A, while the other side is made adjustable on the tension-rollers B B2.;
Over the slots in the frame C, in which works the convexed board G, I place metallic plates, securely fastening the same to the frame, by means of screws.
Through a hole in these plates, d, passes a thumbscrew, a2, by means of which these convexed boards c c are securely heldin position` D is the board upon which the goods are rolled, and the ends of which fit snugly in the clamping-jaws e e.
E is a crank-handle, which connects with, and is securely fastened to the clamping-jaw e, by means of a bar, passing through the' hole in the metallic cap G.
This crank-handle, being turned, causes the board D to rotate.
E' is a crank-handle, on the opposite side of the frame, which is provided with a hollow screw, F, which meshes with a female screw in the metallic cap G'.
By means of this hollow screw, theclamping-jaw e can be made to accommodate itself to any width of" lgoods, 4within certain limits, without having to. adjust the side, A', of the main frame.` I
lThe clamping-jaw e is provided with a shank, e2, which fits and works in the hollow screw F.
Both clamping-jaws e e are provided, on their inner side, witha series of serrated teeth, ,b b, which incline toward the centre from each end, and by means of which the board D is rmly held during its rotation.
The operation is as follows:
The roller is rst adj usted, by means of the tensionrollers B B, and the thumb-screws et a, to the width of the goods desired to be rolled. The board I) is then inserted between the clamping-jaws e c, and the crank-handle E turned, until the jaw e firmly clasps 1 the end of the board D. The machine is then ready for rolling the goods.
The end of the goods is then passed over the roller B, then under the roller B2, then over the double-convexed board c, then under the convexed board c, then over the tension-roller B, and then to the board D, when, by turning the crankhandle Ethel goods are compactly wrapped, and the operation is complete.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim therein as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The convexed boards c c, when -they are convexed on both edges, zmdwhen tbe whole are so combined, in n n imlepeildent frame, C, as co 'retain the saune relative position in regard to their convexity, no matter at what width adjusted, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the tension-rollers B B2 Bz, frame A A', convexed boards c c, thumb-screws a a' a2, clamping-jaws e e, and board D,wl.1en the whole is constructed and arranged substantially as described, as and for the purpose specified.
