OLIVER VALLANDIGHAM, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
Letters Patent No. 88,237 dated March 23, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN' CIG-AR-DRIERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part; of the same.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be nit known that I, OLIVER VAL LANDIGHAM, o f St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improved Cigar-Driel', of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, refe-rence being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my invention, with a portion in section.
Figure 2 represents a transverse sectional elevation of same.
Similar letters indicate like parts.
"Ihe object of my invention is to thoroughly and rapidly dry cigars after they are packed'ready for market.
It consists of a wooden box, A, iigs. 1 and 2, of convenientsize, having an inner casin g, Ii, of zinc, or other non-conducting metal, so arranged as to leave an airstreak, c, all round the box, between the wooden and metal casings.
a gas-tube, t, gS. 1 and 2, provided with an ordinary burner, c, having a common gauze cap, g, fig. 1.
' A little above the burner is arranged a series of cross-pieces, 1, 2, 3, 4, Sac., g. 1, and 5, iig. 2, on which are placed, one on top of the other, the cigarboxes filled with cigars, ready packed for market, and the lventilators being closed, and the gas lighted, the door is shut, and ina short time, according to the greenness of the cigars, they are completely dried, after If the heat bei" which they require no more attention. comes too great, it is only necessary to open the ventilators, to reduce it to the required intensity. If it is desired, for any reason, to use coal-oil instead of gas, I arrange sheet-metal piping, s, (copper being preferable,) on the inside ofthe box, as shown in figs. 1 and 2, attaching it rmly to the back of the box.
rIhis piping, by means of the extension 0,1igs. l and 2, is connected with the open air, while, by means of the hinged jointn, iigs. 'l and 2, the elbow p may be made to assume the positions shown in figs. 1 and 2. An ordinary coal-oil lamp, having a copper chimney, being placed on the bottom of the box, near enough to the opening to receive a diie supply of air, the elbow n is turned down, so that its mouth covers the chimney, which is made to fit closely in it. The-ii, the lamp being lighted, al1r the smoke and impurities pass out the extension o, the heat being r. diated -into the box. The lamp may, if desired, be placed beneath the box, and the gas-pipe being turned back by' means of a hinged joint, its chimney may pass up through the opening, and connect with the elbow.
The same apparatus may be fitted for oil and gas, oi'` for either separately; and I do not intend lto limit myself to the use of either alone, or both coinbiied.
This apparatus may be used either in the house or out, and by it almost any degree of heat may be obtained, its intensity being under complete control by means of the ventilators, and, being adapted to either gas or oil, can` be used everywhere. The air-streak between the casings completely removes any danger of lire.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the box A, inner casing b, burner c, gauze cap g, ventilators c, c', and It, all arranged, constructed, and operating substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
2. The combination of the box A, inner casing b, ventilators c, e', and i, piping s, and elbow p, of a cigar drying apparat-us, with an ordinary coal-oil lamp, all
, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
A cigar-drying apparatus, combining the devices above set forth, when constructed, arranged, and operating siibstaiitially as and for the purpose shown and
