Letters Patent No. 88,220, dated March 23, 1869.

MPROVEZMENT IN' WATER-CLOSETS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making put of the slm;

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J. H.VSEYM0UR, town, in the county of 'Washingtom and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water-Closets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a'full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingv a part of this specification, in which is represented a vertical section of a water-closet constructed according to my improvement.

' This invention is especiallydesigued for water-closets to be used in railwayscars and steamboats, and relates to aconstruction whereby, when the lid is raised, the funnel is closed; and

ItA consists in -a novel arrangement of the parts, whereby the lower trap, or valve is made to open clearv of the channel, or passage of the closet, and to thisn end is provided, at its lower extremity, with a fun-v nel of greater calibre, extending somewhat above the tapering .end of the hopper, and eecting a junction therewith by means of an oiset in said funnel, so as to correspond in size with that portion of the hopper 'to which it is secured, in such a manner as to form a recess in the rear portion of the funnel, below the lower extremity ofthe hopper, into which the said trap, or valve is permitted to open, so as to afford a clear and unobstructed passage through the tube.

In order that others may be better enabled to understand the construction and operation of my improvement, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.

Ais the hopper of a water-closet, the lower portionl of which is received within the upper end of a funnel, D, which is so constructed, by means of an offset, F,

near the upper extremity, as to afford suicient space- .below and in rear of the lower extremity of the hopper A, to eect an unobstructed passage from the hopper and through the funnel D, bythe more perfect opening of a trap, 'or valve, e, hinged to the lower extremity of the said hopper, and which opens back into a recess..

E is the floor, to which the closet is secured by means of a iange and screws, or by any other suitable arrangement.

A reversed position of the lid C and valve c is illustrated by those parts of the drawing represented in red outline.

I do not claim, broadly, operating the valve by the i motion of the cover, as this has been done in various ways before.

I am aware that water-closets have heretofore been constructed so that the valve and cover of the seat shallassume the same relative position, as in the natent of E. Mangeon,datedv October 23, 1866. This,l therefore, I do not claim.

'What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l means of the joint d, rod b, and arm j, in such manner that when the cover C is raised, the valve e shall be closed, and cioe versa; essentially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
