Be it known that l, VJALTER BmNroN, a' citizen ofthe United States, residing in High Bridge7 .in the County of Hunterdon and Stnto of NewJersoy,hnve invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Pins for Dredges or Dredging-Chains, of which the following is s, specioation.
This invention consists in the provision of an improved pin for use in dredging machinery, especially in connection Witli the buckets or chains thereof, an object oi' the invention being to so construct the pin that it may be 'made of unmeohineable metal.
A further object oi' the invention is the provision of a cast, manganese-steel tubular dredge-bucket or chain nin. A

lt is not practicable to make the pins solid. of manganeso steel, becziuse in this form the successful heat treatment or" the same could not' he carried out sind ,Consequently the results obtained would he unsatisfactory. ln order to ,properly heat trent manganese steel, it` is essential that the structure or article to he treated should he of uniform thickness and not too thick. ii too thick the heut treatment is not (.eflioient. In; these pins vary in size, frequently having :i dirfnnoi-or of from four to livr inches, or grenier, it would not be practicable to heat trout :i solid pin ol" this diameter. I claim as my invention:
1. An unriachineable metal, tubular dredge-bucket or chain piu.
2. An unmachineable metal, cast, tubular dredge-bucket or chain pin.
3. An unmaehineable metal, tubular dredge-bucket or chainrpin having a pair of separat-ed tubular thoroughly tougheried surfaces.
4. A manganese steel, tubular dredgebuclret or chain pin having a pair of treated surfaces, one forming the interior and the other the exterior surtace thereof.
5. A cast manganese steel dredge-bucl-et or chain pin, heat treated and having exterior and interior tubular surfaces, one forming the interior wall of the pin and the other the exterior wall thereof, with a thoroughly treated zone between such outer and inner Walls.
6. A cast manganese steel dredge-bucket .or 'chain pin, heat treat-ed and having exterior and interior tubular surfaces, one forming the interior Wall othe pin and the other the exterior wall thereof, with a pair of toughened Zones between such outer and Walls, separated h v a hardened zone al' metal.
7. An uniiiaehiueahle metal, tubular, dredge-bucket or chain piu having a p if' or separated toughened portions, one eoi ing the exterior and the other the iu f wall of such pin.
