M. B. GOODELL, OF "WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 88,158, dated March 23, 1869.
IMPROVED FOLDING BEDSTEAD.
me Schedule referred to m the Lernen Patent and making pm ef the name Kna/v all men by these presents:
That I, MJB. Goonnnr., of the `city and countyl of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which-'- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved folding 'bedstead when-closed;
B liigue 2 represents a section the same on line A Figure 3 represents a plan view of my folding bedstead when opened; and
Figure 4 represents a longitudinal section of the same on line C D, fig. 3.
To enable those skilled in the art t0 xvhich my invention belongs, to make and use the same, I will describe it more in detail. y
By referenceto fig. 1 ofthe drawings, it will be seen that in this instance, my improved folding bedstead is made, when closed, or folded'up, .to resemble a bureau. The top, A, ends B, and back C, are secured firmly together, and form a case, or receptacle, into which the frame or bed-bottom and beddingr are folded.
A movable front, D, is arranged to fit between the ends B of the case, and furnished with side-pieces E, by means of which it is supported in an upright position, while, atvthe' same time, it can be conveniently drawn out fromv or moved up 4to the other parts of the case, for the purpose of folding or unfolding the bed=frame and bedding.
The outside of the movable frame D is 'finished with knobs and panels, in imitation of the front of drawers, andthe ends B are made with suitable panels and scrolls, to resemble a bureau;
To the inner side of each end-piece B, are secured two parallel horizontal strips, F, of wood or metal, between which are fitted sliding blocks, or pieces d, from which project pins, or pivots a, which extend through slot-s I, formed in the side-rails G r, and thereby support one end of the bed-frame, or bottom, while the other end of the bed-frame, or bottom, is supported by pins, o r pivots b, that pass through holes in the siderails Gr, said pins, or pivots being supported in the side-piecesfE, a's indicated in the drawings.
The sliding blocks d are made with dovetailed edges, to fit the corresponding edges of the pieces F, whereby said sliding pieces are retained in place. 4
The rails Gr are made in two pieces, and are connected in the centre by hinges m, at their under sides, whffsreby the two parts may be folded together, as shown in g. 2.
Slats K are arranged across the bottom, upon which may be placed coiled springs, for supporting the bedding, or,'if preferred, sacking-cords, or any other materials or device, may be usedY for that purpose.
The ends of slats K, are fitted in recesses cut in the longitudinal bottom-pieces O, fastened tothe lowerinier edges of the side-rails G. y
The pieces O also form convenient and proper means for holding the hinges 'm in place, said hinges being fastened to the side-rails G, and to the pieces O.
Secured to the rails Gr, by the loops n, is an elastic cord, 4, which may be drawn overthe top of the bedding, and fastened to the hook c, for the purpose of preventing any portion of the bedding from being displaced when folding or unfolding the ,bedstead A frame, M, containing drawers N, is, in the present instance, arranged upon the top, A, of the case, but, if preferred, it may be left plain, or be surmounted with a mirror, stand, book-case, or any other article.
To open, or unfold the bedstead, the front piece D is drawn or movedoutward, thereby permitting the bed-frame, or bottom to unfold, or assume a horizontal position, after which the bed can be drawn still further out from under the top partAof the case, as shown in figs. 3 and 4, if desired.
When the bed is in this position, the slide-pieces d are drawn to the forward ends of the pieces F, while the pins a rest in the rear ends ofthe slots f.
Screws, or stops p, are to be used to prevent slidepieces d from moving too far forward.
Toclose, or fold up the bedstead, the front piece D l is moved inward,until the rear end of the bed-bottom reaches the back, O, of the receptacle, or case, when, by pressing down on foot-board l?, the. central, or hinged ends of the bed-bottom are raised, so as to elevate the joints, or hinges mf, above the pins a and b, after which, if the part 'D is forced, or movedY back to the forward part of the case, the rtwo parts of the bed-frame, or bottom will be folded together, into'a vertical position on the pivots a and b,^as indicated fw. 2. Elf desired, the case and movable front D may be mounted on casters, or rolls. In lieu of finishing the bedstead in imitationof a bureau, it may be finished in the form of a sideboard or book-case, or in any other manner to suit taste or convenience.
A head-board may be arranged across the headbf the bed,` connected thereto byhinges, so that when the bed is folded, the head-board will be folded down on to the pillows, and when the bedstead is opened, the head-board will be raised, as indicated in the drawings by blue lines, gs. 2 and 4.
One or more swinging supports, or legs may be hinged to the under side'of the rails G, or pieces O, so that they will drop to a perpendicular position as the bedstead is opened, or. unfolded, and thereby form a, support for the central part thereof', to prevent t'oo much strain on the hinges m. (See blue lines, g.'4.)
It will be observed that the pivots b b are so arranged as toadinit the foot of the bed frame, foot-board, and
footof the hed jto turn down back. of the pivots ,l1/11,1.; jand front of thepiece'Drwhile the Apivotsl a occupy such positions as to admit the front part of the bed to turn down between the same andthe back, C, of the case. (See fig. 2, of the drawings.)
Having described my improved folding bedstead,
What I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement, with a stationary case and its movable front, of a sliding and unfold ing bed-frame, the two parts of which are pivote'd to and connected with said case and movable front, respectively, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
