this character which is particularly useful for the packaging and shipping of a such articles as fruit, although my box will be found useful for other purposes.

The various features of advantage and utility of my novel form of box will be ap-- parent from the description hereinafter given.

It will be understood that my box may be made of any suitable size and dimensions for the particular kind of goods to be packaged and shipped therein, but in the present instance the particular forms of boxes illustrated herein are rectangular and also oblong in cross section.

Referring to the form of box illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, such box is made in two parts or sections, one section being illustrated by the blank in Fig. 1 and the other section by the blank in Fig. 2. The first mentioned section consists of the bottom 1, the to 2, with one of the side walls 3 intermediate thereof and hinged thereto. In addition the top is provided with lateral extensions or flaps 1 on its opposite ends and also with the extension or flap 1 extending from the other free edge thereof and adapted to be secured by the tapes 8, or otherwise, to the 'extensions 1. The top or closure 2 is similarly provided with the lateral flaps or flap 2 The side wall 3 is provided with lateral extensions or flaps 3, together with a second, outer score line 3 in addition to and parallel with the score line near opposite sides of the blank to provide for the hinging of the flaps or extensions 1 2 and 3 to the bottom, top and side walls respectively. After the box or receptacle has received its articles to be shipped therein, the top or closure 2 is swung down in position with the inner end of its flaps 2 positioned within the end walls and passing through the slot, taking their position for the remainder of their length on the outside of the end Walls in the same manner as --the bottom flaps 1*, all as, clearly indicated in Fig. 4. In this manner a simple and inexpensive packihg box having great strength and rigidity is produced, the extensions or fiaps of the top and bottom covers or closures firmly securing the body portion of the box and the lateral flaps particularly re-inforcing and strengthening the end walls and being themselves held in proper bracing or re-inforcing position by the end ,walls themselves by reason of the interlocking connection between such flaps and the end walls. Moreover, my packing box possesses the advantage of. being readily collapsed or knocked down so that it may be conveniently shipped in flat form. It will be understood that at the factory the section of the box illustrated in Fig. 2 is secured to the section shown in Fig. 1 and that such second section is collapsed flat upon the side wall 3 in the manner indicated in Fig. 5. These boxes are shipped to the consumer or user in the fiat form shown in said Fig. 5 and the same are packed'in pairs, two of such boxes in this flattened form being reversed and insorted or nested in each other, so as to take up a minimum amount of space. It will also be understood that the

Now referring to the modified form of-box illustrated in-Figs. 6 to 11, this form is substantially the same as that hereinbefo're described, with the exception that the box, in-

stead of being made in two parts or from two single blanks, .is-made in four parts orsections illustrated in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the fourth member or section being aduplicate of Fi 7. Figs. 6 and 8 illustrate the top'9 and ottom 10'with the end extensions or flaps 9 and 10 'res ectively and also the side extensions or aps 9 and 10*. By preference, the extensions 9 and 10 are secured to the ends 'of their respective extensions 9 and 10 in suitable manner, as by means of the tapes 11. The body of this modified form of box is made in two similar parts or sections which may both be illustrated by. Fig. 7, each section consisting of a side Wall 12 and an end wall 13, each side wall having a pasting strip 12 to enable it to be secured to an adjacent end wall 13, as indicated in Fig. 9. Each end wall is provided with similar slots 13 entering from o posite edges that is from the top and ottom edges and correspondin to the slots 5 in the form of box first descri ed. By preference,

both of the closures are hin ed to the rear side wall, the top being provi ed with a pasting flap 9 for hinging it to such rear side wall along its upper edge and the bottom 10 being provided with a similar pasting strip 10 for hinging it to the lower edge of the same rear side wall. The box is set up for use in the same manner as the box hereinbeforedescribed and when in position ready for use assumes the form illustrated in Fig. 9 and when filled and readyfor shipment assumes the position illustrated in Fig. 10. This modified form of box, as well as the preferred form illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, may be,provided with projecting pieces or strips 1.4 on the outer faces of the top and bottom in order to distance or space the box away from the floor or away from a box placed orstacked thereon, in order to provide for ventilation between the boxes or between the boxes and the floor, which may be found necessary or desirable in the shipping of some kinds of fruit. Moreover, if desired and as-shown in respect to the modified form of box, the closures may be provided with holes or openings for ventilating the interior.

Either form of the packing box illustrated herein may be tied or sealed in any suitable manner as by means of cords tied around the modified form of construction, however, 'I

have illustrated a fastening means composed of wires, although the ordinary cords are sufficient for the purpose. As shown in Figs. 9 and 10, Iprovide the top and bottom preferably at a central point at their free ends or sides with a wire 16, whose outer ends are secured thereto, preferably by passing them through one of the pieces or blocks 14 and fastening them to a button 17 or the like, asclearly shown in Fig. 10. After the closures are brought securely together the two wires are loopedover each other and the free ends are passed underneath the extensions or flaps 9 and 10*, respectively.

I claim: i

. 1. packing box or receptacle comprising side and end walls, two opposite walls being provided with opposite vertical slots entering from their top \and bottom edges and scores connecting said slotsrunnin across such walls to enable them to be co lapsed for shipping, and a closure provided v stantially equaling in length the width of with extensions on two opposite sides adapted tobe received in and interlock with said slots substantially as described.

2. A packing box or receptacle comprising a body portion consisting of sides hinged toeach other, and closures therefor provided with side extensions, two of the opposite sides having slots entering from their top and bottom edges, said slots being connected by scores and arranged to receive the extensions of the closures; substantially as described.

3. A packing box or receptacle comprising a body portion consisting of sides hinged to each other, and closures therefor provided with side extensions, and hinged to the top and bottom ofsuch body portion of the box, two of the op osite sides of said body portion having s ots connected by scores and arranged to receiveand interlock with the extensions of the closures; substantially as described. I

4. A packing box or receptacle comprising a body portion consistingof side and end walls hinged to each other, the end walls having slots connected by scores extending inwardly from their opposite edges, and top and bottom closures hinged to one of the side walls and having extensions or flaps entering the slots when the box is assembled; substantially as described.

5. A packing box or receptacle comprising a-body portion consisting of side and end walls hinged to each other, and top and bottom closures hinged to one of the side walls and having extensions on two of its opposite edges corresponding with the ends of the box, the end walls of the box having at their middle line slots connected by scores, said slots entering from opposite edges and subsaid extensions, and receiving the extensions; substantially as described.

,6. A packing box or receptacle made in two parts or sections, one section comprising one side wall and two end walls which end walls are provided with transverse slots entering from their top and bottomedges said slots being connected by scores, and the other section consisting of the top and bottom closures with an intermediate portion hinged to the closure and forming the second side wall of the box, said closures having on two 0 posite sides flaps or extensions arranged to be received by said slots intermediate their length; substantially as described.

7. A packing box or receptacle made in two parts .or sections, one section comprising one side wall and two end walls which end walls are provided with transverse slots entering from their top and bottom edges, and the other section consisting of the top and bottom closures with an intermediate portion hinged to the closure and'forming the second side wall of the box, said closures having on two opposite sides fla s or extensions arranged to be receivec by said slots intermediate their length, and said second side wall of the box being provided with extensions having scores parallel to the hinge lines of the side flaps of the closure and distant outwardly therefrom the thick-.

8. A packing box or receptacle comprising two side walls and two end walls hinged together, the end walls having opposite slots connected by scores, and closures hinged to one of the side walls and having extensions or flaps adapted to be received by the slots; substantially as described.

9. A packing box or receptacle made in two parts or sections, one section comprising one side Wall and two end Walls which end walls are provided with transverse slots entering from their top and bottom edges, and the other section consisting of the top and bottom closures with an intermediate portion hinged to the closure and forming the second side wall of the box, said closures having on two opposite sides flaps or extensions arranged to be received by said slots intermediate their length, and the end walls having scores connecting their respective slots to enable such end walls to fold in- Wardly and collapse for shi ping in knockdown condition; substantial y as described.
