Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. MAOKAY, a citizen of the United. States, residing at 66 James street, Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam and Hotater Boilers Formed of Circular Sections, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
The present invention relates to a boiler formed of horizontal cast iron sections of circular form having each a central hub for a water connection, so that the water circulates upward and downward through the series of superposed hubs.
The invention embraces a particular construction for the firebox section and for the superposed sections, and for the connections to a damper regulator, and the construction will be understood by reference to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a front elevation of the complete boiler; Fig. 2 is a plan of the section next below the dome section, with the cleaning-out door and smoke-outlet which are applied to the space between the sections; Fig. 3 is a plan of a disk-section; Fig. 4 is a vertical section where hatched on line 44 in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 shows the top of the firebox section; Fig. 6 is a section on line 6 6 through the firebox section; Fig. 6 is a section of the smoke-box and dome at right angles to the line 4-1t in Fig. 2; Fig. 7 is a plan of the water-dome-section; Fig. 8 is an edge view of the same; Fig. 9 is a plan of the steamdome-section, and Fig. 10 an edge view of the same.
The firebox section is shown with a circular water-leg a and a crown-plate b, which plate is provided with a central hub c and perforated with a series (shown as six in number) of vertical fines or smoke-passages d. The outer edge of the crown-plate is in continuous connection with the top of the circular waterleg, and the smoke-passages d extend through the crown-plate around the central hub or water-outlet c. This section rests upon an ash-box 7) having the usual grate q, and the water-leg is perforated at one side with opening a having the firedoor a An open water communication exists between the central hub and the water-leg, through the body of the plate around the several flues d. Between the fiues hollow brackets e are extended from the plate to the water-leg, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, being in open communication with both, so as to greatly increase the area of the passages through which the water moves as it becomes heated.
A disk-section f having a central hub c is shown superposed upon the hub of the crownplate and connected thereto by a central nipple g. The disk is made with rounded periphery as shown in Fig. 4, and of suitable diameter to extend wholly over the fines (I so as to deflect the smoke rising through the same laterally, as shown by the arrows :20.
A flat plate-section h is shown above the disk f, with its central hub 0 attached to the hub of the disk by a nipple g, and having liues d similar to the flues cl in the crownplate I). A casing-plate '1', encircles the space between the crown-plate and the flat section h and is provided with a cleaning-out door f.
The several hubs are made of suitable length to form a suflicient space above and below the hollow disk f to permit the movement of the smoke and gases from the fines in the crown-plate to the fines in the plate h, as indicated by the arrows 21:. A dome-section 70 or 7a (adapted respectively for a steam and a hot water boiler) is attached to the hub of the plate-section h by a hub 0 the steam dome-section differing from the water-dome-section in having a greater height, and in practice having only a single outletpipe Z, while the water-section is provided with two pipes Z for inlet and outlet respectively. The section 7: is shown in full lines in Figs. 9 and 10, and the section is in dotted lines in Figs. 7 and 8.
The outlet-pipe Zmay be placed in the center of the dome, as shown in Fig. 4, but is preferably placed near the front edge of the same, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, to avoid the spray which rises from the current of liquid ascending in the hub 0 In Figs. 9 and 10, a baffle-plate Z is extended partly across the interior of the section between the central hub and the outlet-pipe which prevents the direct movement of any fluid from the rising current to the outlet-pipe and thus secures the delivery of drier steam. The hubs of the plate-section 71, and of the dome-section are proportioned to form a smoke-charm ber 1* between such sections for thelateral passage of the smoke from the flues (1 The periphery of the smoke-chamber 1s inclosed by a casing r provided with a cleaning-out door 8. The casing has a smoke-box 0 upon the side opposite to the door 8, and is provided with a pipe-collar p and with a checkdamper g.
A deflector h which is preferably of conical form, and embracing about one-half a circle, is inserted in the smoke-chamber 1" just outside the flues d upon the'side next to the smoke-box 0, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to inclose the flues (1 upon their side and prevent the direct passage of the gases to the smokeboX. Such deflector causes the gases from this portion of the fines d to take a circuitous path in moving to the smokeoutlet, as is indicated by the arrows :20. in Fig. 4.
In a steam heating boiler, the return pipe m for condensed water is connected with the bottom of the water-leg a. A circulatingpipe n is also connected with the bottom of the water-leg and with the dome-section to permit the chilled liquid to pass downwardly as the heated liquid rises in the boiler. The pipe n furnishes a means for connecting the ressure-pipe of a diaphragm damper-regu lator with the boiler in such a manner that only water pressure will be transmitted nor mally to the diaphragm, and the access of steam to the diaphragm (which will be injurious thereto) will be prevented, and whereby any accidental breaking of the diaphragm will discharge only a few inches of water from the boiler, leaving the sections suitably filled with water to prevent burning. These results are attained by inserting the pressure supply-pipe s for the damper-regulator tinto a fitting it upon the top of the circulatingpipe, and extending the same downward into the circulating-pipe, for only a few inches be low the normal water-line w in the boiler, but not to the level of the under side of the domesection. By this construction an accidental breaking of the diaphragm will permit water to be blown partly from the dome-section to the level of the line w, but not wholly emptying the same, thus leaving the water in all of the other sections and a sufficient amount in the dome-section to prevent burning.

In a boiler having horizontal sections with central hub for water connection, the combination, with a flat disk-section having casing extended around the same and provided with cleaning-out door, of a "firebox section fitted to such casing below the same with a series of flues around the central hub discharging the gases beneath such disk-section, a superposed flat section with a series of flues around the central hub, a dome-section having a bottom water connectionwith the superposed flat section, the two sections being separated by space for the lateral pasa circulating pipe connecting the same, and.
a diaphragm damperregulator having its pressure pipe extended into the top of the said circulating pipe several inches below the water level of the boiler, whereby the water pressure is transmitted to the diaphragm without access of steam, and the breaking of the diaphragm discharges only a few inches of water from the boiler.
3. In a boiler having horizontal sections with central hub for water connection, the combination, with a flat disk-section having casing extended around the same and provided. with cleaning-out door, of a firebox section fitted to such casing below the same with a series of flues around the central hub discharging the gases beneath such disk-section, a superposed flat section with a series of flues around the central hub, a domesection having a bottom water connection therewith, the two sections being separated by space for the lateral passage of the smoke, a casing surrounding the margin of such smoke-space with smoke-box upon one side having pipe-collar thereon, a deflector between such outlet-box and. the nearest smokeflues in the flat section, and a cleaning-out door upon the said casing opposite to the smoke-box, the whole arranged and operated substantially as set forth.
4.
