'iHREADER AND PROTECTOR- FOR NKED RIBBONS.
Specification of. Letters Patent.
Patented March 3, 1908.
Application filed October 24, 1997. Serial No. 398,891. l
To all whomit may concern.'
Beit known thatI, GLADSTONE PERRY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing. at Listowel, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada7 have invented new and useful Improvements in Threaders and Protectors for Inked Ribbons, of which the following is a specification. if,
This invention relates to inked ribbons, and the object of the invention isf toprovide a combined threader and protector adapted for use in yconnection with any'inked ribbon whether used on adding machines or type.- Writingr machines or any otherimachine requiring the use of an inked ribbon.
As is Well understood, the ordinary inked ribbon usedon machines of the class above reasons. First, it is practically impossible. to thread the ribbon through` the various guides of the machine and tix the ends thereof to the Winding spools or reels without soiling the hands and oftimes the clothing of the operator. Secondly, the ribbons new in common use have no tags on the` ends thereof,
thus making it a diliicult and `tedious matter to thread the ends into the catches contained on the spools or reels ol the machine', this being particularly the case with narrow ribbons. y
The object oln the presentinvention is to overcome the defects herein noted by atg taching to the ends et' the inked ribbon what i may be termed combined threaders and prol tectors or in other Words, threaders l`or iacilitating the application of the inked ribbon to the machine and protectors i'or preventing any ink lrom being transferred, i'rom the ribbon to the threader, while the ribbon is on i the holder or spool upon which it is rolled. I With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construci iion, combination and arrazigcment'oi' 'parts l hereinafter Yhilly described illustrated and claimed. i l ln the accompanying draivings, Figure l is l a plan view oi an inked ribbon 'mounted on a f spool or holder and having the devic(` oi" this i invention applied thereto. `l"i`g. is a similar i View showing the outer end oii the ribbon partially unniound from the bolder. Fig. Z- is a plan View oll one end oi" the ribbon showing the combined protector and throader. Figs. 4 and 5- aredetail perspective views ol' the ribbon ends showing the manner ot attaching the device. of this invention thereto. i l
bon which may be of any length or Width and In the drawings l designates an inked rib- 2 designates the holder upon which the ribbon is placed said holder maybe either fiat,y
or cylindrical. s
. l i In' carrying' out the present invention,
stripsgvhieh are of any suitable material such as paper or cardboard are secured to the exv treniities ol the inked body of the ribbon by ce1nent,glue or in any other convenient man ner, the adjoining extrennties of the ribbon and strips being overlapped as shown at 3 in Figs. 4 and 5. Under the preferred einbodiment of the invention, the strips are first prepared by dipping the saine in a bath ot hot paral'lin or any other suitable preparation 'not' affected by' .the ink and not adapted to absorb any portion of the ink contained on the ribbon. If necessary the extremities of the strips which overlap the ends ot the inked ribbon may be left uneoated in order that they may more eti'ectively adhere to the ribbon. Before dipping the strips, they may be printed with any suitable directions and information such as the color ol` the ribbon, the makers naineandany other data .lesired.
v The strips may -be of any suitable length and are preferably of the same width as the ribbon l and each strip is provided with a `tolding line intermediateits length which line is indicated at 4. This olding line may, il desired, be indented 'so as to more readily told. The inner portionloll said strip between the folding line et and the extremity of the ribbon and which is designated bythe numeral 5 is termed the threader or threading tag, while the outer end portion (i beyond the folding line 4 is a protector or pro,- tectifng tag that is adapted to beV folded in`- ward against the inner surface of the thread`- ing tag 5 s'o as to lie between said threader and 'i the inked ri hbon thereby preventing any part ol the ink of the ribbon from being transferred to the threader. 'l`heret'ore, when the ribbon is unw'onnd from its original holder and the protecting tag 6i is torn oil' on the lineI of the told t the threader 5 is lett perfectly clean and free from ink. Another advantageous feature. ol the invention resides in providing i the device with oppositely arranged notchesy T substantially V-shaped so that when the' outer section l ol' the strip is torn otl` the extremity ol' 'tlufvthreading portion of the strip will be soi'newh-at pointed as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3. This will facilitate the threadingr ofthe ends of the rib- .tool
or reels of the machine. The device isalso a safe guard for the manufacture of the ribbon as the name ofthe manufacturer or brand of 5I .the ribbon may be represented on the strip in addition to th usual plan of printing the naine of the manufacturer or brand of lthe ribbon or both on the box in which the ribbon is 1d.
Havin thus fully described the invention,
Whatis c aimed as new is n 1, The combination with an inked ribbon,
of a combined threader and protector attached to and projecting beyondthe end of adapted to be-folded between the re 'C er the ribbon and embodying 'a folding portion'/ of the protector and the body of the ribbon, substantially as described.
of a combined threader and protector therefor consisting of a strip of relatively stii m'aterial attached to and projecting beyond the .extremity of the ribbon, said strip being provided with oppositely arranged notches and a fold line extending across the strip adjaycent to said notches.
In testimony Whereofl affix my signature in 4presence of two Witnesses.
