Be it known that we, MORTON DECKER and MARVIN H. MATTY, both citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, atChicago and Clayton, in the counties of Cook and J efierson, and States of Illinois and New York, have inventedcertain new andusefu an we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,- and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to improvements in cream separators, and more especially to driving mechanism therefor The object of our invention is to provide a simple driving mechanism for a cream separator with the gearing contained in a removable gear case permitting theuse of a sprocket chain drive inside the casing with a. low down milk supply tank, whereby the milk may be readily fed into the top of the bowl. y l y With these objects in view, our invention consists in the constrifiztion and combination of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.

The upper part of the gear casing is provided with a removable cover 0, whichcover is provided with a flange 9 fitting down within the main portion of the gear case, and held iriplace by the frame a, when the gear case is inserted in said frame. On the shaft i,- which carries the sprocket wheel 72., is-journaled a gear wheel g, which meshes with a small gear wheel 1*, on the shaft s, journaled in the gear casing. The shaft 8 I carries a larger gear wheel t, which engages with the spirally arranged gear u on the shaft 0) of the separator proper. A nut 10 on the lower end of theshaft v keeps the latter in place. The separator bowl ac, provided with the cream and milk pipes 'y and 2, is supported in any suitable way,'as by an anti-friction ball bearing in the casing 1 attached to the side of the frame a.

The gear wheels are thus thoroughly lubricated as they throw the" oil from one to the other, the cover 0 serving to keep the oil from being thrown out of the gear case.

The construction described has the further advantages that the sprocket chain 9 is completely covered when in use, thus avoiding hability of accidents, and the milk can 3 can be made-low down and located close to the separator, feeding into the top thereof.

Having thus described our invention, -what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is z- 1. The combination of a hollow metal casting provided with oppositely placed openings of different sizes,.a separator supported by said casting, a removable gear cas ing containing the driving gear for said separator, said gear casing being provided with a projection for,engaging the smaller opening in said casting and with a shoulder adapted to fit against, said casting, said gear casing being adapted to be slipped into the larger openingiiin sai casting, means for securing for the said gear casing in said casting, and means for operating the gearing in said casing, substantially as described.
