HYDBOCARBON-MOTOR.
To aZZ 'whom it may concern:
lImprovements in Hydrocarbon-Motors,l of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hydrocarbon motors, and particularly to the oil pump and strainer construction.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide in the bottom of the motor crank case an oil pump andv strainer support which may be detached `as a unit from the outside of the'crank case.
Another object of the invention is to provide an oil pump and strainer support in the bottombf a motor crank case and so construct and assemble the pump and strainer that the pump is detachable from the inside of the support and the strainer is readily detachable from the outside thereof. Suitable passages arel formed in the support between the pump and strainer chambers.
Another object of theA invention is to detachably secure the strainer to the outside of the bottom `of the motor crank case, so that the strainer may be readily removed and cleaned and reassembled. f
Other objects and` features of the invention will tion, taken 1n connection with the drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1` is a transverse section through the bottom half of a motor crank case, showing the pump and strainer in section;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the pump and strainer support removed from the crank case; and
Fig. 3 is an elevation view of the pump and strainer shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 10 represents the lower half of a crank case of a hydrocarbon motor in which there is formed an opening 11 which is closed by a cover or I j support 12. which thereby forms in eii'ect part of the bottom wall of the crank case. rhe cover 12 is preferably bolted to the case` as by bolts 13, so that it is removable therefrom asa unit.

Application Ied May 17, 1913. Serial No. 768,300.
The cover or support 12 is mostly of double walled construction, and one end of it houses av gear pump 14 between its walls 15 and 16, the latter wall. preferably being the inside wall and removably secured to the body part of the support 12, as by the screws 17. The pump 14 is shown as having a squared shank 18 for one of its gears and this shank is adapted to `be inserted in the lower end of a square tube 19 when the @support 12 is placed in position. The tube 19 is driven from the motor through any suitable driving mechanism, not shown in the drawings. The other end of the support 12 is formed with openings 20 and 21 in its separated walls, than and 4in line with the opening 2,1. In this end of the support, the strainer is supported and the screen 22 is of inverted cu form and extends upwardly from the open` ing 20 and is formed with a ange 23 which is slightly larger than the opening 20 but smaller than the opening 21, so that the cup shaped screen may be inserted upwardly through the opening 21 into the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. rlhis screen 22 may be suitably built up of a frame-work 24 upon which the screening material proper is soldered or otherwise fastened. A
An inverted cup shaped protector 25, slightly larger than the screen 22, is placed over the screen, as shown in Fig. 1, and is provided with a flange 26, which is also slightly larger smaller than the opening 21, so that the protector may likewise be inserted through the opening 21. The protector 25 is provided adjacent its .flange with va series of openings 27 through which the oil in the bottom of the crank case may pass to reach the screen 22. rllhis protector prevents the splashing of oil in the crank case from stirring up the sediment that may collect around the screen, so that this sediment is' the opening 20 being slightly smaller than the opening 20 but Y vface by a cover 29 which closes the opening 21 and has a part 30 in contact with the lower face of'said flange 23. The cover 30 is secured -'in place by a clamping arm 31 extending across the outside of the cover in contact with a central point of the cover, as at 32, the clamp being pivoted at 33 to a lug 34 formed as an integral part of the support 12 and detachably secured at itsv other end to an integral extension 35 formed on the support 12. This latter connection comprises a bolt 36 pivoted to the end of the clamp 31, as at 37, and a nut 38 for drawin upon the bolt. Y
It w be seen that the cover 29 is of hol- -low construction and provided with openings 39 in its side walls, so that together with the space 40 it forms a chamber boeneath the screen 22 and this chamber is in communication with the inlet side of the pump 14 by a conduit or channel 41 formed in' the support 12.
From the above description of the drawings, it will be understood that the oil in the crank case 10 accumulates inthe bottom thereof and passes through the openings 27 and the screen 22 into the chamber beneath! A the screen. The oil is then drawn from this chamber through the passage 41 and into the pump 14`where it is discharged thrruglh t e a pipe 42 and led to various bearings o motor to be lubricated. 1n most systems of this character the oil is drained from the bearings and returned to the crank case so that it keeps up aconstant circulation.
It will be understood also that the entire support 12 may be removed as a unit with the pump and strainer intact by .removing the bolts 13, and thatthe strainer parts may,
be removed for cleaning while the support is in place on the bottom ofthe crank case simply by loosening'the nut 38, swinging the bolt 36 away from the extension 35, and dropping the clamp 31 from contact with the cover 29. The cover may then be removed and withit the screen 22 and the protector 25. The parts may then be cleaned and as -readily reassembled by the lreverse operation.
A specic embodiment o'f the invention has been described in detail, and will be specifically `claimed, but it will beunderstood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown, as it will be apparent that changes may be made' Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y
