Description

No. 880,848. I PATENTED MAR. 3, 1908. H. WIENER.
OOLLAPSIBLE BASKET.
' APPLICATION FILED FEB, 27, 1906.
I "r w A TTOR/VE i of the base strips.
UNITED HUGO WIENER, OF HENDERSON, KENTUCKY.
COLLAPSIBLE BASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 3, 1908.
Application filed February 27' 1906. Serial No. 303,247.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO WIENER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Henderson, in the county of Henderson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Collapsible Basket, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collapsible baskets and the like. Its object is to provide a device of this character all parts of which are permanently connected and which can be quickly collapsed and set up and which, when in its folded or collapsed condition will occupy a very small space. The basket is therefore articularly adapted for use in transporting fruit, vegetables, etc, and a large number of empty receptacles of this character can be returned to their original shippin point and will occupy a comparatively sma il space.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts to be hcreinaiter'more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I h .ve shown the preferred forms of my invention.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a basket constructed in accordance with my invention, said basket being shown set up; Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the basket collapsed. Fig. 3 is an edge View of the collapsed basket. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the manner of connecting any two Fig. 5 is a detail view showing one of the connections between the connecting wires or rods, and Fig. 6 is a detail view showing a modified means for connecting the bottom of the basket to one of the panels.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference 1 and 2 are side panels each of which is preferably formed of a series of parallel slats 3 which are secured at one end to a base strip 4 extending throughout the length of the panel. The other ends of the slats are secured preferably by means of staples 5 to a connecting wire or rod 6 also extending throughout the length of the panel and terminating at its ends in loops 7, which are preferably disposed at right angles to the panel. The end panels 8 and 9 are similar in construction to the panels 1 and 2. Their connecting wires or rods 10, however, terminate at each end in a coil 11, which surrounds a portion of one of the loops 7 and .therefore strips 4 by means of a hinge forms a hinge. The base strip 12 of each end panel is connected at its ends to the base Staples 14 are preferably driven into two pairs of the slats forming one of the side panels, said staples extending across the openings be.- tween the slats and being engaged by eyes 15 fastened to one edge of the basket bottom '16.
When the basket is in its set-up condition, the bottom 16 rests on the four base strips 4 and 12, and holds the device in such position and prevents it from being accidentally collapsed. Should it be desired to fold the basket so that the same will occupy a very small space the bottom 1.6 is swung upward. upon the eyes 15 and the staples 14 untilit rests against the panel to which it is connec ed. While in this position it will be over lapped at the ends by the loops 7, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, and the other side panel can then be swung inward diagonally so as to cause one end panel to overlap and rest upon the bottom 16 and the other end panel to swing into alinement with theside panel 3, to whicht he bottom 16 is coinnected. The ends of the bottom 16 are preferably recessed as at 17 to accommodate the loops 11 when the basket is folded. Bails 18 are loosely supported by the connecting wires or rods 10 and constitute handles whereby the basket may be readily grasped. Instead of fastening the eyes 15 by means of staples 14 a pin 19 may be placed between and driven into the edges of the slats as shown in F ig. 6. This means for fastening the bottom to the side panel will be found to be much more compact and equally as strong as thc form shown-in 1.
What is claimed is:
1. A collapsible receptacle comprising side and end panels each panel consisting of a base strip, slats secured at one end thereto and connecting wire secured to the other end of the slats and parallel with the base stri 3,
hinges connecting the/base strips of the sh e and end panels, loops integral with the ends of the connecting wires of the side panels and extending substantially at right angles to said wires, the wires oi the end panels having coils at their ends loosely and non-detachably engaging the loops of each side panel, a bottom hingcdly connected to one of the side panels and foldable thereon, the loops of the side panels being of suliicient length I to overlap the ends of the bottom when the basket is folded, and a bail pivotally mounted on the wires of opposite panels.
2. A collapsible receptacle having side and end panels each consisting of slats and a connecting Wire secured to the slats, the Wires of the side panels terminating in loops extending inwardly from the ends of, and at right angles to, the panels, and the connecting Wires of the end panels terminating in 0011s loosely and non-detachably engaging the adjoining loops of the side anels, said.
loops and coils being-so disposec as to permit each end panel to fold fiat on to one of the adjoining side panels.
3. A collapsible receptaclehaving side and end panels, each pane consisting of slats, a
' contlnuous connecting wire secured upon one face of the slats, the wlres of the s1de panels terminating in loops extending in wardly from the ends of, and at right angles to, the panels, and the connecting 'Wires of the end panels terminatin in coils loosely and nondetachably-engag1ng the adjoining sai bottom having recessed ends disposed to receive the loops when the rece tacle is fold i.
In testimony that I claim t e foregoing a'smy own, I have hereto affixed my signatui e;
in the presence of; two Witnesses.
