Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, GEORGE V. SOHNELL, a citizen of the United States, residingat Troy, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoods for Emery, Polishing, or Buffing heels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in blower heads or hoods for emery, polishing or buffing wheels and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which is capable of adjustment to conform to the character of the work so that all the dust will be caught and conveyed to the suction-pipe.
A further object ofmy invention is to provide a blower head or hood which may be readily and easily removed to permit the change of different wheels.
A. further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character referred to which ma be further adjusted to act as a damper to cut off a suction of air in the suction-pipe.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of this kind which will be simple in its operation and cheaply and easily built..
My invention consists in the constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention showing the hood in one position of adjustment, Fig. 2 is a similar view show ing a device in another position of adjustment in full lines and in a third position of adjustment in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line, y y, of 1 with the wheel removed, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the adjustable part of the hood.
Like parts are represented by similar characters of reference in the several views.
In said drawings a represents the wheel for which my improved blower head or hood is adapted which may be either an emery, polishing, buffing or similar wheel, this wheel being suitably connected to a rotating shaft a in the usual way, a is the stationary casing or frame of my improved blower head or hood, which is mounted upon suitable adjustable legs a a". This stationary part a is shaped to conform to the periphery of the wheel and is preferably extended about half way around same, and has attached thereto the usual suction-pipe a The part a is also provided with a side wall or flange a on each side thereof.
Located within the stationary frame part a between the walls a is the hood proper b, which is also constructed with inclosing side walls I) and adapted to inclose substantially half of the wheel a, but sufficiently removed from the periphery thereof to form a channel about the same. This hood 1) has located at each side thereof upwardly projecting arms b bent inwardly at their outward ends as shown at b so as to loosely embrace the stationary part a Located on one side of this movable hood is a pin 6 this pin being located in ears or guides 73 as shown. Secured to the stationary part a is a series of sockets 6 within which the pin 6 is adapted to fit. Also located in the outer periphery of the movable hood I) is a slotted opening I), this slotted opening being of such length and so located as to register with the openings to the suction pipe a in any of the positions of adjustment of the pin 6 with reference to sockets or openings b".
It will be seen from the construction described that the movable hood, I), may be adjusted within the stationary part a to any position desired about the wheeland held in these different positions by the pin 1) engaging in the sockets 1), these adjustments being for the purpose of adapting the hood to the class of work so as to bring the mouth of the hood up as close to the work as possible in order to insure all the dust being delivered into said mouth and thence to the suctionpipe. The slotted opening b will register with the opening to the suotion-pipe a in all these different positions of adjustment, any number of which may be provided. When the device is not in operation the movable part, b, may be thrown around to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2 in which position it will act as a damper and close the opening to the suction-pipe. The inclosing arms 5 it will be seen, will simply movably secure the movable part b to the stationary part b but will permit its ready removal therefrom so that a new wheel may be inserted by simply sliding the movable hood around in the stationary part until the arms clear the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a stationary frame or casing having a suction-pipe attached thereto, a movable hood located therein, and a slotted opening in said hood, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a device of the character described, a stationary frame or casing having a suction-pipe attached thereto, a movable hood located therein, having a slotted opening to permit communication to said suction-pipe in certain positions of adjustmentof said hood, and to completely close said suctionpipe in another position of adjustment, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a device of the character described, a stationary frame part having a suctionpipe secured thereto, a hood located thereon, having a slotted opening, and means for removably securing said hood to said frame, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
