Description

No. 880,678. v PATENTBD MAR. 3, 1908.
A. MARTIN.
HEMMER. APPLIGATION FILED MAR. 31, 1905.
AUGUST MARTIN, OF ROCK ELM, WISCONSIN.
HEMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 3, 1968.
Application filed March 31 1905. Serial No. 253.497.
hemmers for sewing machines, its object being to provide a device which will turn a more uniform hem than the ordinary hem ming attachment, and which will enable the hem to be begun at the edge of the fabric.
To this end my invention consists in the features of construction and combination herein after particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved hemmer Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is an end view.
As shown in the drawings the hemming attachment is formed of a single piece of sheet metal bent to form a flat bottom 2 for attachment to the machine, an upwardly curved top wall 3 and a straight partition-wall a intermediate of the bottom 2 and top wall. The attachment at the junction of the top wall 3 and partition-wall i is cut away to form a tongue 5, said tongue being upwardly and outwardly bent as shown, forming a slot 6 between it and the adjacent edge 7 of the top wall 3 of the hemmer. At the rear end of the tongue 5 is formed a circular opening 8.
In operation the edge to be hemmed is first folded to form the hem and then inserted within the front end of the hemmer with the body of the cloth below the partition-wall 4,
and the folded edge of the cloth above the partition-wall. Asthe material is drawn through the hemmer the folded edge of the hem will stand in the slot 6, being rolled upward by the inner edge of the tongue 5. This will result in an evenly turned hem. By means of the tongue 5 it becomes unnecessary to bend upward the forward edge of the partition-wall 4, as is done in the or dinary hemmer, and it thereby becomes easy to insert into the hemmer the turned edge of the material so that a hem is evenly turned from the extreme edge of the cloth.
The opening S permits the edge of the fab ric to roll over and under the rear end of the tongue to form the inturned part of the hem.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
A hemming attachment comprising top and bottom walls, a flat intermediate wall, and a tongue 5 extending upwardly and forwardly from the outer edge of said intermediate wall, the tongue being bent outwardly toward its upper edge and being separated from the adjacent edge of the top wall to form an intermediate slot, said attachment being formed at the inner end of the tongue with an enlarged opening 8 constituting the rear end of said slot, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I a'lliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST MARTIN.
