Be it known that I, ISAAC -FAWOETT, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating-Drums, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements inheating drums, and has for its object the production of a heating drum, provided with special deflector plates whereby in the passage therethrough of the heated air and products of combustion, the larger portion will be retarded and deflected alternately to opposite sides and directed evenly and continuously against the outer casing or heating surface of the drum, and other but smaller portions thereof will pass or rise vertically, also directed continuously against the outer wall of the drum, whereby a large percentage of the heat units usually wasted will be by convection and conduction transmitted to the outer or heating surface proper of the drum. And to these ends, my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a heating drum embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line :c-a1 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 illustrates a modified form of drum, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the deflector bolted to the casing of the drum.
Referring to the drawings, 2 represents the outer cylindrical casing of the drum, closed at the top and bottom by heads Sand 4, the latter being conical and both being provided centrally with tubes 5 for attaching the drum to two sections of stove pipe or other suitable conduit for products of combustion. Within the casing 2 at suitable distances apart are fastened horizontal deflector plates 6, said plates being cut away at their opposite sides on arcs of different radii, and the plates are arranged so that the cut out portions alternate from side to side from the bottom to the top of the drum.
The openings indicated by numerals 7 and 8 and formed by the cut out portions are for the purpose of providing draft, and passageways for the heated gases and other products of combustion, and to direct and impinge them against the heating surface of the drum. The deflector plates are cut away at 7 sufliciently to afford draft for combustion but in such form as to direct the heated gases evenly against the outer casing of the drum, and, as shown at 8 the deflector is cut away sufliciently-to afford continuous passage of products of combustion but not enough to prevent the retarding and reversing of the direction thereof in their ascent and exit through the drum. The deflectors may be cut away more or less to suit the draft of any particular chimney or kind of coal to be used.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modification in the construction of the drum, which consists in providing a connection 9 for the stove pipe in the side of the wall of the drum instead of in the end. Both ends or heads of the drum may be made flat if preferred.
In operation, the drum being connected with and. between two sections of stove pipe or other conduit, the products of combustion pass into the bottom of the drum and strike the lowermost of the deflector plates, then the larger portion of said products is deflected by the aforesaid deflector, and pushed by the force of the draft, toward and through the opening primarily prepared for the draft by cutting away of the deflector, as shown at 7. Another portion of said products rises and passes'through the narrower opening 8. The process above described is repeated in similar manner as the heated gases and other products of combustion ascend and pass each of the deflectors placed in the drum. It should be observed that a continuous perpendicular passageway is aflorded for portions of the rising products of combustion, and th at the form of the entire contour of the deflectors is such as to force said products constantly against the outer cylindrical. surface of the drum, and furthermore, that the deflection of 'a portion of the products of combustion alternately from side to side keeps all the said products of combustion in motion and thoroughly mixes them, thus greatly aiding the transmitting of the heat to the outer surface of the drum. I claim as my invention:

the wall of said casing than between the edges of the plates having recesses 8 and the wall of the casing, and said recesses 7 and 8 alternating with one another from end to end of said casing, whereby a tortuous path will be formed therethrough and the greater portion of the products of combustion rising through the space formed by a recess 7 and striking the edge of the plate above having the shallower recess 8, Will be deflected to the 10 opposite side and against the walls of the casing, substantially as described.
