Description

BENJAMIN-F. MATTOX AND SIDNEY CORSON,' OF WEST RIDGE,
- ILLINOIS.
Lena; Para; Nasaos, atea Mwah 23, 1869.
ILPRVEMEN T IN CHAMFERING-MACB'INR The Schedule referred to in these llanera-Patent and making part of the sama.
To all whom "it ma/yconcern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN F. MATTOX and SIDNEY GORSON, of Viest Ridge, in the county of Mamn, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Machine for Ghamt'ering the Chimes of Barrels, Tubs, and the like; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.' l
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective device whereby the chimes. of barrels, tubs, and other similar stave vessels', may be mitred, o r chamiered,so called, in an expeditious and accurate manner; and
a It consists in the combination and arrangement of the vparts of the device, whereby the same is operated without gearing.
The drawing represents a side view of our invention,
also showing, in red color, a sectional view of the chime of-a barrel being cutby the knife.
Aisthe base, or pedestalof the machine, from which rises an upright, B.
The horizontal arm D is provided with a perpendicvnlar part, C, which, with the upright, B, is provided with a series of holes, for the bolts b b, by means of 4which devices the heightof the said arm D is adjusted to suit' barrels and other stave vessels of diierent heights.
'llie arm D E is not continuous, but jointed, by forming the part E with a tenen-extension, which fits within a corresponding recess in the part D, and is secured in place' thereby pins, c c, or other devices, which will admit the adjustability of the parts to different lengths.
d is a clamp, serving to support the part E, by crossing underneath the recess and tenori, the ribs of the clamp catching in horizontal slots in the sides of the part D.
The revolving arm, I, bears the chamfering-tool, K,
which is simply a dat cntting-plate'of metal, having an eye-lug at each end.
The upper eye-lug is aihxed to the arm I by means of a pin, and the lower lug is afixed, by means 'of a.
pin, to a perpendicular brace-plate, J, the upper end of which is ah'ixed to thearm,.and so arrangedas to bring the cutting-tool at the proper angle for cham fering the chime. c v
The arm isltted to slide in a head, G, so that the radial distance from the cutter K audits centre of revolution may be adjusted for barrels of dierent diameters, a pin, n, or other suitable device, being employed to hold the arm in place.
The head Gis formed with a round extension, e, serving as a centre, or shaft, on which the arm revolves.
A crank-handle, H, is axed to the extension e, above `the arm E, and serves to revolve the arm, and thus actuate the cutter K. 5
The brace-plate J contains several holes, so that the cutter may be adjusted to dii'erent angles.
The drawing-illustrates the manner of operating vthis machine.
We are aware that chamferingmachines have been operated by gearing, but this forms no part of our invention, and We do not claim it, as the gearing renders a machine heavy and expensive.
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters I Witnesses:
- WM. DALY,
JOHN BnvINs.
