PACKING-JOINT FOR RADIATORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1908.
A li ti fil d May 29. 1907. Serial No. 376.331.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEWART W. JAMEsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Joints for Ba diators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others the top skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in packing joints for radiators, and consists in the provision of a steel plate which is bent at one end and adapted to engage a marginal recess formed in the cast iron top of a radiator, means being provided for a filling for cement intermediate the curved portion of the plate and the walls of the recess.
The invention consists further in various other details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view vertically through a portion of a radiator, showing the application of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the steel plate.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the top of a warm air furnace radiator made preferably of cast iron and provided with a downwardly extending flange B which is apertured to receive retaining screws D, and also a second flange E, which latter is shorter than the flange B and parallel therewith, said flange being adjacent to the marginal edge of F designates a circumferential wall of the radiator, which wall is being bent to form a swage F with the end F adapted to bear against the end wall of the space or recess between the flanges, A curved portion of said swage is adapted to contact with the inner face of the outer flange and a concaved portion of the swage forming means for the reception of cement, the parts being so arranged that, when adjusted in place, the swage will cause the filling to pack securely to form a gas tight joint.
A cement filling, designated by letter K, is filled in the said recess intermediate the end of the wall F and the walls of the recess, and fills the loop portion, a part of the cement filling intermediate the inner surface of the end of the plate and the adjacent wall of the flange B extending below the loop formed in the wall F.
By the provision of a packing joint as shown and described, allowance is made for the expansion and contraction of the metal, and at the same time produce a tight joint intermediate the top and the side wall of the radiator.
What I claim is A packing joint for warm air furnaces, comprising, in combination with a top of cast metal having two concentric flanges of unequal lengths projecting from the same adj acent to its marginal edge, the adjacent walls of said flange being parallel, a circumferential wall having its upper portion bent to form a swage to be inserted in the space between said flanges, a curved portion of said swage adapted to contact with the inner face of the outer flange, a concaved portion of the swage forming means for the reception of cement, the parts being so arranged that, when adjusted in place, the swage will cause the filling to pack tightly to secure a gas tight joint, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
STEWART W. JAMESON.
