IMPROVEMENT m' PRoJEc-rmns.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, WILLIAM A. COBB, of Orange, in the county of Franklin, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Projectiles; and I'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of my invention.
Figure 2is a front-end View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
.This invention relates to a new and improved projectile; and
It consists in the combination of an internal shell, having a screw-rod extending through it, and secured therein by a nut, a can of coarse powder, and a can of fine powder, with an external rifled shell, all being ar-v ranged in such a manner that the missile, or projectile, when discharged from the gun, or piece of ordnance, and coming in cont-act with any body afiording suffiploderl, and the internal shot projected from the external one, thereby greatly increasingsthe efiiciency of ordnance.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings- A represents the external shell or shot, which is of cylindrical form, andtapering at its front end;
This outer shell has a longitudinal opening, or hole a in it, to receive a shot, B, the outer end of which is reducad nearly to a point, to form, when B is fitted within A, a conical front end for the projectile,as shown cleafly in fig. 1.
'At the rear of the opening, or hole in A which receives B, there is a smaller opening, I), which receives a can, 0. v
The latter contains a charge, D, of coarse powder, said can being provided with a flange, a at its outer end, to bear against a shoulder, 0, formed by the difference between the diameters or"- the openings, or holes a. and 11. (See fig. 1.)
-E is a washer, which may be constructed of lead or other suitable material, and interposed between the can 0 and the inner end of the internal shot B; and
F is a tube, which is fitted within 0, and isprovided with a flange, (1, at its outer end, to screw into 0.
The inner end of the tube F is stopped with a cut wad, e, and said tube is filled with a charge, f, of fine powder.
In the outer end, or cover of the tube F, there is an opening, in which aperoussion-cap, or small pistol-car tridge, H, is fitted; and
' I is a rod, which passes longitudinally and centrally through the internal shot B, said rod being prevented from dropping out from B by a' nut, g, on its inner end. The outer end of the rod I projects somewhat beyond the internal shot B.
Both shots, A and B, are provided with a packing, h, at their inner ends.
The projectile, when the several parts are all axijusted and fitted together as shown in fig. 1, is ready for use. 4
I would remark that the nut g is so adjusted on the rod I, that arequisite amount of play is allowed to admit of the inner end of the rod being drawn from the cap H when the projectile is stored away, and the rod I may be retained in this outward posit-ion, to prevent casual or premature explosion, by any suitable means. I would further remark that both shots may be rifled, if desired.
I am aware that compound projectiles have heretofore been made, composed of major and minor projec tiles, having an interposed charge and fulminate priming, but this I do not claim.
Having thus described my invention,
I c1aim as new, and desire to secure by-Letters Patent The rifled internal shot B, having a central longitudinal passage, the screw-rod I, not 9, can 0 of coarse powder, can F of fine powder, and the cartridge, or cap H, in combination with the rifled external shell, or shot A, as herein described for the purpose specified.
