Specification of Lettersk Patent.

.ippiicnin nea nay 2o. 190i. sena No. 374.793;
To all whom' it may concern: l
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. WiLsox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los' Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Roller-Clutch,-of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to interinittent grip f devices, and the objects of the invention-are an enlarged view, partly shown in Fig. 4.
.to improve the construction ofl the same.
The.accompanying drawings illustrate the invention, and referring thereto Figure 1 is a side elevation of the clutch with part of the druni shown in section. Fig. Z is a section o ii line rl-l'i 1. Fig. 3 is in sectioinillustra-ting the arrangement of cooperating seats. Fig. 4 is a side elevation in detail of a gang of rollers with their suporting springs. Fig. 5 is a perspective view in detail oi" a detachable roller seat.
The clutch illustrated is a double clutch, both sections of whic i are siinilar in construction and both being on a shaft 1 land inclosed between plates 2, the latter having hi'ibs 3 which are fastened byfset screws 4 to the shaft 1. A division plate 5 is arranged between the two sections of the clutch.
rlhe two sectionsare siniilarin construction, each section comprising a thick disk 6 fastened by keys -7' to the shaft 1. A. sleeve S eiicircles the disk 6 and is fastened theret i by keys 9 as shown in Fig. 1 Arranged on the periphery of each sleeve 8 is series of roller seat blocks 1t). \\edge-sliaped as shown in Fig. 5, having on its under side a boss 11, thev latter beting-received in a recess forined in the sleeve t. Machine screws 12 pass through the bdsses 11 into the sleeve 'to detachably hold the seat blocks in place; this perinits of easily substituting new seat blocks when the old ones beconie'worn. The thicker edge of each seat block is provided with a groove. 13.
Arranged concentric-ally with each sleeve S is a driving druin 14 having a grooved periphery for ope-ration by cable. Resting is a gang of rollers 15, behind which is a siniious fiat spring 16 having several projecting convex oitions bear ing against the respective rol ers as clearly Behind 'each spring 16 is a spring plate l wliichin turn is supported by a flat bowed spring 1S, the latter being seated upon each seat block the rollers and their Each sea't block is in the groove 10. This s )ring construction forces each ini l, i i l 1:5 ir. the adjacent seat block divid'ual rol er tightly between the scat block 1t) and the inner cono-ave surface of the drum 14 which insures a niaxiinuni gripping Ieffect not to be attained by ii single long roller.
As the driving drinn-1l is operated in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1. it causes the rollers to grip tightly between the drinn and their respectiveeat blocks 10, which results in causing the inner disk to tiirii at the saine rate of speed as the driving druin, thereby' driving the s'haft 1. lpon the reverse niovenien-t of the driving lriini the .grip of the rollers is relaxed and the rollers 'are idle, but continuous inotion is imparted to shaft 1 during the reversal o'f either clutch section by the driving stroke of thel other section. 1What l claiin is 1. In a roller clutch, a disk, a driving drinn concentric therewith, a series of -Wedgeshaped roller seat blocks detachablyfasten'ed to the disk, a4 gang of rollers between each seat block and the driving drum, and means engaging grooves in the respective seat blocks for holding each. individual roller'of a gang in contact with its seat block and the driving drinn.
2. A roller clutch coniprisinga disk, a con-4 centric driving driini, I a series 4of wedgeshaped roller seat blocks each having a boss fitting in the disk, a screw passing through each boss into the disk, and a gang of rollers between each seat block and the driving diiiin.
3. roller clutch comprising a disk, a concentric driving druin, shaped roller seat blocks each having aboss fitting in the disk7 a screw eac-h boss into the disk, and a gang of rollers between each seat block and the driving drinn, each of said -seat blocks having a groove along itsl wider edge, a flat spring seated in cach groove. a. spring plate supported by each hat spring, a sinioiis spring supported by each spring plat-e, each sinuous spring inaking contact with the individual rollers of the adjacent gang of rollers.y
