To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN R. SOHMIEDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Drier, of which the following is a full, clear, and-exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved clothes drier, which is simple and durable in construction, and arranged to accommodate a large amount of clothesin a comparatively small space, and to permit of quick folding into a compact form for conveniently storing the clothes drier.

The invention consists of novel features which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the improve ment, sundry of the clothes arms being in an extended position, and the remaining ones in a folded position; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the head of a clothes arm; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the slidable leg fixture, and Fig. 5 is a like view of the fixture for the leg braces.

On a suitably constructed base A is erected a post B terminating at its upper end in an integral pivot B engaged by the hub O of a holding plate C carrying the clothes arms D for supporting the clothes to be dried. A screw E screwing in the pivot B holds the hub O against accidental displacement on the pivot B but allows free turning of the holding plate O on the pivot B. The holding plate O is provided with radial slots C having their outer ends C enlarged, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1., and for the purpose here- The inner end of each clothes arm D is provided with a head D of I form, the web D of the head engaging the slot in the end of the clothes arm D, and the top and bottom flan es D", D of the head D engaging the top and bottom of the clothes arm D. The top flange D is provided at its ends with integral clenching prongs D for clenching the sides of the clothes arm D to securely fasten the I head D in position on the inner end of the clothes arm D. The web D has an extension D at the under side of the bottom flange D and this extension D terminates in a knob D from which extends integrally a bar D approximately parallel with the under side of the clothes arm D, the bar D having an angular point D adapted to be driven into the clothes arm D at the bottom thereof, so as to firmly hold the head D in position on the arm D. Now the head D7 is adapted to pass through the enlarged end O of the slot C and is adapted to rest on the under side of the holding plate C on opposite sides of the slot O to support the corresponding clothes arm D in. a horizontal position, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2. By having the bar D arranged as described the clothes arm D is permanently attached to the holding plate C, and allows convenient movement of the clothes arm D, to permit the operator to move the clothes arm either into a horizontal extended posi tion or into a folded vertical position, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. As the head D is made of a single piece of metal it can be cheaply manufactured, and by its construction can be readily secured in place on the head D, it being understood that the point D is only bent into angular position and driven into the clothes arm D after the bar D has been engaged with the radial slot O In order to hold the clothes arm D against lateral movement, the holding plate C is pro vided with upturned lugs C alternating with the slot C, so as to engage the opposite sides of a clothes arm, to prevent the same from shifting laterally.

In order to give greater stability to the clothes drier, legs F are provided pivotally connected at their upper ends to a sliding fixture G mounted to slide on the post B, and the legs F are pivotally connected near their lower ends with braces H pivoted on a fixture I secured to the post B near the lower end thereof. Now by the arrangement described the sliding fixture G may be moved up on the post B, so as to swing the legs F inwardly into a folded position, as plainly indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, to permit of folding the device in a comparatively compact form, with the clothes arms D in a vertical position, so that the entire device takes up very little room.

In order to lock the sliding fixture G in the latter is in the uppermost position it rests on the pin J then engaging the upper aperture B In order to prevent the pin J from being lost, it is attached to a chain J iecured to one of the legs F, as indicated in ig. 2. r

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A clothes drier provided with a holding plate having radial slots, each enlarged at the outer end, a clothes arm and an attaching head fixed on the inner end of the said clothes arm, for holding the latter in either an extended or folded position on the said holding plate. the said head being of I-shape, the web of the head engaging a slot in the end of the clothes arm and the flanges of the head engaging the top and bottom of the clothes arm, the said web of the head having an integral extension at its underside, the extension terminating in a knob-for passing through the enlarged end of the said slot, and a bar extending integrally from the said knob approximately parallel to the clothes arm, the bar having an angular point at its end for engagement with the underside of the clothes arm.

A clothes drier provided with a holding plate having radial slots each enlarged at the outer end, a clothes arm, and an attaching head fixed on the inner end of the said clothes arm for holding the latter in either an extended or folded position on the said holding plate, the said. head being Lshape, the web of the head engaging a slot in the end of the clothes arm, and the flanges of the head engaging the top and bottom of the clothes arm, the top flange having integral clenching prongs for engaging the sides of the clothes arm, the said web of the head having an integral extension at its underside, the extension terminating in a knob for passing through the enlarged end of the said slot, and a bar extending integrally from the said knob approximately parallel to the clothes arm, the bar having an angular point at its end for engagement with the underside of the clothes arm.

3. A clothes drier comprising base, an apertur'ed. post erected thereon, a holding plate mounted to turn on the upper end of the post, clothes arms held on the said holding plate and adapted to be moved into an extended horizontal position or into a folded vertical position, legs, a leg fixture slidable on the said post and to which the upper ends of the legs are pivoted, braces pivotally connected with the said legs, a brace fixture on the said post adjacent to its base and to which the said braces are pivoted, and a pin for engagement with the apertures of the post, to hold the leg fixture in its uppermost and lowermost positions.

4. In a clothes drier, the combination of a holding plate having radial slots with enlarged outer ends and clothes arms, each having a headed projection on its under side at its inner end, and a bar extending from the head of the projection approximately parallel with the arm. i I

5. In a clothes drier, the combination of a holding plate having radial slots with en-v larged outer ends, and clothes arms provided with heads at their inner ends, having prongs for securing the heads to the arms said heads being each provided on its under side with a headed projection and with a bar projecting from the head of the projection and having its end secured to the clothes arm.
