Description

vifs te; diluted v. tant @utenti-@fina g A. H. SCOTT, OF CONCORD, NORTH CAROLINA.f.e
Letters Patent No. 87,976, dated Merch 16, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may conce/rn:
Be it known that aI, A. H. SCOTT, of Concord, inthe county of Cabarras, and- State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, land in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fence, and
Figure 2, a view of the clamp uniting the panels.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make andV use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The panels are made of boards, of suitable length and thickness, marked A A in the drawing, which are nailed to a board, B, placed across their centre.
The end-boards C C, to which the boards A A are also nailed, are placed, with their edges, and not their sides, against thesame.
yEach panel being made in this manner is distinct and separate, and can easily be transported to any place where needed; and, if any one of the same should -get broken, or in any way injured, it can easily be replaced by another.
The fence-post consists of a bottom board, D, placed on its edge, and to each end of which a narrower board, E, is secured, in such a manner that the two boards E E join together, at asuitable height above the centre of the board D, forming, with it, a triangle, as seen in iig. 1. Y
To this post, thus formed, the panels are fastened, by means of bolts passing through the lower end of the end-board C and the centre of the board D, and by a bolt or pin passing through the upper part of said end-board C and the joint of the two boards E E.
Instead of having two ofthe boards E 11,1 may dispense with vone of them, and use only one, in which case the upper end of the end-board C is secured to the upper end of the board E used, and the lower end secured, as before, tothe centre of the board D.
Two panels are joined together, without having a post between them, for the purpose of forming a kind of stair-step, so as to adapt the fence to the side of a ends, which pins, when` the fence is once set as desired,
prevent the panels from sagging or otherwise giving way.
When two` panels are thus joined together, I generally insert a board between the end-boards, of the same shape, which gives the fence additional strength.
In running my fence across the face instead of up a hill, it is necessary that the panels of the fence should be kept in a vertical position, whilst the bottom piece D will be inclined.
In order to accomplish this result, holes a a are made in the piece D, through which a pin is inserted, the latter being made to enter a corresponding hole in the rail C.
By this arrangement, the panels of the fence can readily be adjusted, so as to occupy a vertical position.
It will readily be seen that, by this arrangement, a fence can be placed even on the steepest hills, and, being vof such simple construction, it is easily made, and put up or taken down without any great trouble.
Having thus fully 'described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of ltwo fence-panels, when constructed as herein described, and joined together by means of a clamp, F, passing through elongated slots on the end-boards, so that a kind of stair-steps will be formed between the panels, to adapt the fence to a hill-side, said panels having also pins passing through their upper and lower ends, and provided with the post-s E E D, the latter having the holes a. a and pin, wherebya vertic l adjustment of the fence can be made, adapting it tohilly or irregular ground, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I ax my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
A. H. SCOTT.
Witnesses:
JOHN L. SHINN, Gao. W. KEsTLEB.
