HOISTING DE VICE.
Specification of .Letters Patent.
Application filed November 12. 1907. Serial No. 401.855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. SoHMIoK, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Hamburg, in'the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented gcertain' new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Devices and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to chain hoists, or hoisting devices, has for its object economy in the expenditure of power in the operation of hoisting, by reducing the friction of the parts to the minimum; and the invention consists in' certain improvements in construction, which will be fully described in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification:Figure 1 represents a vertical section partly in elevation of my improved hoisting device. Fig. 2 a side elevation partly in section showing the hoisting member, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 a vertical section partly in elevation, the chain or driving wheel being omitted. Fig. 4 a front elevation of the disk or head provided with working members, on a reduced scale. Fig. 5 a vertical section of the same, and Fig. 6 a plan of part of the loose ratchet wheel detached.
Reference being had to-the drawings and the designating characters thereon, the numeral 1 indicates the housing or casing provided with a hook 2 swiveled in a boss 3, and on which hook the device is suspended.
4 is the hoistin member provided with a shaft 5, supportec in the sides or wall of the housing in the usual manner, and on one side of the member is a projection or boss 6, on which the hoisting chain 7 is supported. On the periphery of the hoisting member are rollers or disks 8, supported on stub-shafts 9 which are seated in recesses 10 and are secured to'the hoisting member by transverse pins 11, so that the rollers revolve on their shafts.
12 indicates the head or disk, on the face of which are radio-helical cams orworking members 13 which engage the rollers 8 011 the hoisting member 4. The headis provided with a shaft 14 which has its volves in the seat 15 in the sleeve 16, and is secured to the driving-Wheel 17, by a pin 18 extending through the hub 18 of said Wheel bearing and re- I and the shaft 14. In the revolution of the disk 12 and the rollers 8, their bearings are.
always at a right angle to each other. 19 is a cap secured to a flange 20 of the housingl, by bolts 21, and its inner surface 22 forms a bearing for the sleeve 16, at whose inner end is an annular flange or collar 23 which engages a seat 24 on the cap 19 to take part of the thrust of the head 12, and at the outer end of the sleeve is a rabbet 25, in which is seated a loose clutch ring 26, provided with teeth 27 on the inner face thereof which engage like teeth on a clutch 28 integral with or secured to the hub 18, and revolves freely thereon in the act of hoisting. In the descent of the article which has been hoisted, the teeth on the part 28 the loose ring, spread the two apart, and form an effective brake, by pressing the sleeve 16 against the disk 12 which causes them to revolve together in lowering the article which has been hoisted.
In hoisting, shaft 14, and
the head 12 revolves on its the cams 13, of which there may be any preferred number used, engage the rollers or disks 8 successively to propel the hoisting member 4, and the heads 29 on the stub-shafts travel in a groove 30 in the inner face of the cam. The cams are of gradually diminishing height or thickness and maintain contsant contact with the rollers 8, so that there is no time when the hoisting device is not equally and uniformly effective.
The rollers 8 are shown as revolving in a plane at a right angle to the plane of revolution of the hoisting member 011 which they are mounted, but it is obvious that the angle of these rollers may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. Other variations'in form of the several parts may also be made and are considered Within the scope of my invention.
It will be observed that the cams or working members 13 are of constantly diminishing thickness, to provide for continuous effectiveness of the cam in the revolution of the head 12, or as the rollers 8 travel toward the transverse center of the head 12.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. In 'a hoisting device, a revoluble disk or head provided with a working member on the face thereof having a groove in one wall thereof, means for revolving said disk, a hoisting member having members on the Patented Feb. 18, 1908.
engage the teeth of periphery thereof revoluble approximately at a right angle to the plane of revolution of said hoisting member, and shafts extending through the latter members. i 2. In a hoisting device, a revoluble disk or head provided with radio-helical working members on the face thereof havin a groove in their inner walls, means for revo ving said disk, a hoisting member having revoluble members on the periphery thereof engaging said working members, and detachable shafts supporting the latter members and provided with a head at their outer ends.
3. In a hoisting device, a revoluble disk or head having a radio-helical Working member on the Face thereof, means for revolving said disk, a hoisting member having stub-shafts in the periphery thereof, and revoluble members supported on said shafts.
4. In a hoisting device, a revoluble disk or head having working members on the face thereof and of varying thickness, means for revolving said disk, and a hoisting member having revoluble members on the periphery thereof engaging said working members.
In testimony whereof I 'affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY J. SGHMICK.
