WAGON-BODY.
Specification of Letters Fatent. Patented Feb. 18, 1908.
Application filed September l0. 1907. Serial No. 392,101.
3.) To each side of each of the standards 11 is secured a metallic cleat 12 the lower ends of which depend below the bars Z and are formed with elongated slots 13 to receive bolts 14 .which extend. through the bars 2 and also through said cleats. The end gates To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, HARRY KNOX, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Washingtomin the county of l/Vashington and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Bodies, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanyng drawing.
This invention relates to wagon bodies, and its primary object is, to provide a wagon l body which may be readily converted from a box-body, into a hay-rack, or vice versa,
The invention comprises a wagon-body consisting of longitudinal and transverse bed timbers the latter having their ends recessed and beveled, in combination with side' board standards and slotted cleats for con necting said standards to the ends of the l transverse bars of the wagon bed, in such a manner as to permit the side-boards to be supported in either a vertical or inclined position.
The invention also includes removable end gates and means for supporting the same upon the wagon body.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter, in connection 16 extending below the transverse bars 2 adapt them to lit the sockets 7 of the metal straps 6.
YVhen constructed and arranged as thus far described the invention provides a fwl'eon body of the boXt vpe with vertical sides and ends.
To convert the body into a hay rack the end gates 15 are removed, after which the sides 10 are turned outward to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5, to engage the shoulders 11l with the shoulders 4 of the cross bars 2. The slots 13 in the cleats 12 permit of this movement, and the lower ends ends 3 of the cross bars 2. Vertically eX- tended end gates 17 having the lower ends 18 recessed to iit the sockets 8 of the straps 6 are then placed in position as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 thus completing the formation o a hay rack. 1t will be apparent that the slotted cleats 12 limit the outward movement of a part of the speciiication, and its features the sides 10, and in connection with the of novelty will be set forth in the appended claims. standards 11 maintain said sides at the de- 'ln the drawings z-Figure 1 a side elesired inclination to support a load of hay. vation of the device as arranged for use as a" The sides of the vehicle .bed may be readily box body or bed, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of restored to the vertical position shown by the same, Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof, dotted'--lines in Fig. 5, and the end gates Fig. 4 is a to plan of the wagon body with sliownin Figs. 1, 2 and 3 substituted for the its side-boar s in inclined position to provide l gate shownin Fig. 5.
Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the same.
The wagon bed consists of longitudinal beams 1 and a series of transverse bait 2, the latter having their ends beveled as shown at 3, and recessed to provide shoulders 4, The longitudinal beams of the body are supe ported at their ends upon holsters 5, to which are secured metallic straps 6 bent to protion 'as lmay fall within the terms and scope 'of the-.following claims.
' Having fully described my invention what 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z. y
1. A vehicle body comprising a pair of longitudinal beams, cross bars supported thereon and having their ends eXtendin b evide sockets 7 and 8 for the purpose hereinl i yond the beams, saidv ends having shou ders after explained. The floor 9 consists of boards secured upon the transverse bars 2, formed therein, holsters on which said longiand the side boards 10 are secured to standi tudiiial beams are supported, a bottom supards 11 which rest upon the projecting ends ported on said cross bars, sides for said body, ofthe bars 2. The lower ends of the standstandards to which said sides are secured, aids are recessed to form shoulders 11a E the said standards having shoulders at their which engage shoulders 11b formed by rel lower ends engaging shoulders in the upper cessing the upper surfaces of the bar (Fig. i
15 of the wagon are provided with standards and having their lower ends recessed tol, The invention includes all suoli variations. p in the details and minor features of construcof the standards 11 rest upon the beveled faces of the cross bars when the standards are in the vertical position, cleats secured to opposite sides of said standards extending be oW the cross bars and provided With slots, and pins carried by said cross bars and engaving in said slots7 the said sides and standarde being movable to an inclined position, the shoulders of the standards when the latter are inclined engaging the shoulders in the ends of the Gross bars, and the pins in the cross bars en aging the eXtreme ends of the slots in said c eats.
2. A Wa on body comprising a pair of longitudine beams, cross bars supported thereon With their ends extending beyond the beams and provided with shoulders, a bottom mounted on the cross bars, sides for said body, and standards to which said sides f inclined position.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
HARRY KNOX.
