To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL T. JoNEs, Sn, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of'Corinth, in the countyof Alcorn andState of Mississippi, have invented anew and useful Strap Turning'and Stretching Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for turning, shaping and stretching straps made from cloth or other suitable fabric in which the straps are sewed, and then turned to hide .the seam.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple machine for facilitating the turning of straps of cloth which have been sewed up as straps for mens pants, vests and for' other purposes. 1
Another object is to provide means in connectiontherewith for stretching and shaping the so turned straps.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the machine mounted on a table, parts of which are broken out; Fig. 2 represents a plan view thereof with the bell-crank lever and pedal omitted; Fig. 3 represents a detail side elevation of the stretcher; Fig. 4 represents a top plan view thereof with the stretching members closed; and Fig. 5 represents a similar view with the stretching members expanded.
In the embodiment illustrated, the frame is shown preferably made in one piece and consisting of a bed 1 having uprights or pedestals 2 and 3 arranged at its opposite ends. A bracket 4 is secured to one end of the frame and has fulcrumed on a pin 5 a bellcranklever 6 to the lower end 7 of which is connected a rod 7 This rod 7 is connected at its free end to a pedal 8 which is fulcrumed to a base plate 9. A stretcher 10 is mounted on the edestal 3 and consists of a longitudinally-disposed member 11 having an enlarged rear end 12 secured rigidly to the upright3 by screws 13 and is provided with a tapered V-shaped front end 14 adapted to fit the end of the strap to be stretched. Disposed on the opposite sides of the member 11 are two movable stretching members 15 and 16 pivotally connected with said member 11 by pivoted links as 17. The rear ends of these stretcher members 15 and 16 are connected with a cross-bar 18 by means of links as 19 and 20 and the cross-bar 18 is connected with the upper end 7 of the bell-crank lever 6 by links 21 or any other suitable means.
Connected with the cross-bar 18 by means of the link 21 is a coiled spring 22 attached at its outer end to the pedestal and it tends to draw the cross-bar 18 forward. The stretcher members 11, 15 and 16 are preferably made of two thicknesses of sheet metal separated by metal separators, the front end of the side bars 15 and 16 are bent inwardly at an obtuse angle to fit over the V-shaped end of the rigid member 11 when the bars are in closed position.
. Mounted on the pedestal 2 is a spring actuated turning member 25 having a'longitudinally arranged slot 25 in its enlarged rear end with its tapered end 26 extended towards the stretcher 10 and with the tip of the member 10 normally engaging a socket 10 in the front tapering end of the turner 25. This member 25 1s slidably attached to the pedestal 2 by shouldered screws 27 and 28 and a coiled spring 29 is attached at one end to the rear end of said member and at its other end to the inner side of the pedestal 2 to hold said member normally in engagement with the stretcher member.
In the operation of this machine the unturned straps may be kept on the bed 1 and the operator takes the strap to beturned and pulls it over the member 25 which is of the same sha e and size as the strap. This lacing o the strap on the form forces the atter back against the tension of its s ring into the dotted lined position shown in igs. 1 and 2. After placing the strap on the form 25 the spring returns it to normal position with the point of the stretcher 10 extended into the socket 10 of the turner 25. The stra is then turned over the stretcher and by epressing the pedal 8 the members 15 and 16 are forced apart by the toggle links as 17 and drawn slightly backward and the point 14 of the rigid member 11 enters the strap point and the strap is stretched to the proper shape. The pedal is then released and the strap may be removed, and stitched or pressed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1+- 1. In a strap turning and shaping machine, the combination of a supporting frame, a turning member and a stretching member arranged oppositely on said frame, said stretcher member having means for engaging one end of the strap while it is being turned from the turning to the stretching member.
2. In a strap turning and stretching machine, the combination of a supporting frame, a turning member mounted thereon, a stretching member also mounted thereon and arranged opposite said turning member and means for holding the opposing ends of said members normally in contact.
3. In a strap turning and shaping machine, the combination of a supporting frame, a form mounted on said frame and shaped to fit the strap to be turned, and spring retracted means for stretching said "strap arranged adjacent said form.
4. In a strap turning and shaping machine, the combination of a supporting frame, a form mounted on said frame and shaped to fit the strap to be turned, means for stretching said strap arranged adjacent said form, and spring retracted means for laterally expanding said stretching member.
5. In a strap turning and shaping machine, the combination of a turning member and a stretching member arranged oppositely 'on said frame and means for laterally expanding said stretching member.
6. In a strap turning and shaping machine, the combination of a supporting frame, a turning member and a stretching member arranged oppositely on said frame and spring retracted means for laterally expanding said stretching member.
7. In astrap-turning and stretching machine, the combination With a supporting frame, a turning member mounted thereon, of a strap stretcher comprising a fixed member, movable members disposed on opposite sides thereof,'links' pivotally connecting said movable members to said fixed member, a spring for holding said movable members in closed position, and means for opening said movable members against thetension of the spring.
8. In a strap-turning and stretching machine, the combination With a supporting frame, a turnin member mounted thereon, of a strap stretc er comprising a fixed member, movable members disposed on opposite sides thereof, links pivotally connecting said movable members to said fixed member, a spring for holding said movable members in closed position, and a lever connected With said movable members to open them against the tension of the spring.
9. In a strap-turning and stretching machine, the combination With a supporting frame, a turning member mounted thereon, of a strap stretcher comprising a fixed member, movable members disposed on opposite sides thereof, links pivotally connecting said movable members to said fixed member, a spring for holding said movable members in c osed position, a bell-crank connected at one end With said movable members and a pedal connected with its other end.
